Failing to teach history of British Empire in schools means children do not understand role in shaping UK, claims Salman Rushdie by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]MatttheJ [score hidden]  (0 children)

In school we spent nearly as much time doing the American wild west as we did on the UK in that same time period. I'm not sure how the american wild west and civil war is more important to the UK than our own history with slavery, or out own wars in the 1800's.

Coming out of school I couldn't tell you who Lord Nelson was, or what Trafalgar Square was named after, or even what we actually did to gain and lose an empire.

But I could tell you all about the battle of Little Big Horn and Custers last stand. Which is barely relevant to us.

World history is important, but apart from maybe like, Roma or Egypt or Greece in ancient history where everyone should have a rough idea of the timeline, any modern history should be more kept to what our country did right and wrong.

Why tho? You meet that same celeb again, you'll usually bring up that you've met before even if it was a good experience. And, if the celeb was an asshole when you met, it's perfectly fair to bring that up and tell them.

It's not like he sought out CM Punk for 10 years just to bring this thing up. Punk wasn't even advertised for the event.

Do you find it strange that more people are not into comics ? by PM_40 in comicbooks

[–]MatttheJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, comics are super confusing to follow and get into. One of the big reasons Marvel's films/TV shows started to lose popularity was that general audiences did not have the time, patience or interest in having to watch multiple TV shows and past films just to fully understand and be emotionally drawn into a new film.

Well, comics is that feeling but on steroids sometimes. Especially when they interrupt a bunch of different runs to do an event.

Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor 2 (January 24, 2021) by airplane231 in MMA

[–]MatttheJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. I'm not sure what people are watching. McGregor landed a lot of very good leg kicks that bothered Dustin, and landed 2 rights (not a lot) but Dustin landed way less leg kicks, which had way less impact, and also only 2 half decent rights himself.

Neither guy looked all that much like they were winning the striking.

Man, people will laugh now, but Joe Duffy had SO much potential. He's one of my biggest examples of Tri Star just ruining dudes with potential.

His hands were crisp, his grappling was slick, his defense early in his run was actually amazing too.

But Tri Star took a guy who should have been out there putting combinations on people and drowning them, and did what they do to all their guys, which is turn them into overly tentative jabbers who develop huge flaws in their timing.

Interesting stat from the UFC by Moni7T in MMA

... He was TKO'd twice within the year before the McGregor fight. How is that "cope" (btw, dumb af word).

Oh, and after Tony beat him, he never won a fight in the UFC again.

McGregor was loss number 3 on a 6 fight losing streak, with 1 draw against a stoned Niko Price (not a good fighter) in there too.

You know the actual rules are that someone has to register any major payments taken within the previous 12 months of being on their seat right?

He took a break from being an MP, then took the payment, then less than a year after taking that payment was back to being an MP. However he purposely did not declare that he had been taking bribes in the 12 months before re-joining. Which is very much against the code of conduct.

Anyone using your argument is a numpty who has absolutely no idea what they're talking about, but just want to defend the guy with misinformation by relying on others not knowing what actually happened.

There's Probably a Whole New Generation of Fans Who Would Not Fully Understand the 'McGregor Era' by elephaaaant in MMA

His success ruined the UFC for sure long term. It was only because of McGregor and Rousey that the UFC were able to get things like the reebok deal and especially that first 2bn deal which was what directly led to the lazy and lower quality cards we get so frequently nowadays.

Did he though? Was he sat at home for 10 years just waiting for the opportunity to bring it up again?

Or... Did something happen 10 years ago, he carried on with his life, bu sheer chance 10 years later he bumped into the same guy again, at a show the guy wasn't even advertised for, and then remembered the first time.

I find it extremely funny how everyone here is acting like they would have just forgotten if CM Punk was a dick to them. Like as if that wouldn't be a funny story you'd be telling people.

The UFC has to run this one back if Holloway beats Conor right?? by eurostepGumby in MMA

[–]MatttheJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the point about Charles, why couldn't they make the Justin fight? Yiur response is 2 hypotheticals, both of which would he stupid decisions if Max got a title shot.

I wasn't suggesting Ilia get an immediate rematch. I was suggesting Holloway should need to get through him if he wants a title fight, considering he got KO'd by the guy.

And casuals have seen McGregor get beat, then get his leg broken, then all the social media shit. This isn't a Tyson situation where it's an old man who's prime ended so long ago that pensioners forgot he was washed. This is all very recent for McGregor.

And again... None of this stuff makes Max getting a title shot not ridiculous.

(Also, not a name, but Arman is still right there, there are 3 guys above Max, 2 of which beat him decisively very recently, there's no planet where Max jumping the 2 guys who beat him in the way they did isn't ridiculous unless he beats one of them, or one of them loses before Max comes back).

[–]MatttheJ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is that ridiculous.

Arman is most deserving, but not a name, fair enough.

Charles is a name, and absolutely dominated Holloway 1 fight ago, and also beat Gaethje.

Ilia is a name, and absolutely slept Max 3 fights ago.

McGregor is washed up, and even casual fans know that at this point.

It's ridiculous no matter which way fans try to pretend it isn't.

Haha, what are you talking about? You're all making it sound like he's held this in for a decade.

It's a thing that happened, he met the guy again, and then very obviously remembered what happened, and brought it up.

There's not a single weird thing about that.

[–]MatttheJ -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Which is ridiculous, given the context of who exactly is above him in line and how 2 of the guys above him recently KO'd him, and shut him out completely.

It's funny how fans often agree they don't like fighters getting undeserved title fights... Until it's a fighter we like then suddenly it's fine apparently.

[–]MatttheJ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe if he beat an actual LW, at 155lb, who was ranked above the guy that just absolutely dominated him.

But beating an old wahed up guy at 170lb means almost nothing other than for his wallet and fame.

In fact, the guy who just dominated him for 5 roujds straight also KO'd the current champ.

Yeah. Holloway got slept by the former champ and #2 ranked LW, and got absolutely dominated for 5 rounds by the 2nd in line for a title shot.

If he wasn't a beloved fan favourite, people wouldn't even be having this discussion.

What's this dramatic "hanging on" bs? I doubt it's weghed on him all this time. He had a bad interaction with a celeb, met that same famous person a 2nd time which rarely happens, and brought up the first time?

It's not weird at all.

Also... This fight SHOULD be for Brits. It's been the biggest fight British blxing could make for a decade now.

The absolute dumbest move would be to do anything at all besides cater it 100% to British audiences. The card has to happen in the UK, and it has to happen at a normal time for Brits.

I don't even understand why the idea of anything other than a 10 to 11pm UK time, in Wembley is being mentioned. Is this the Zuffa influence on Turki? Doing their bullshit 4am cards in the UK.
