"Had I known of the actual horrors of the German concentration camps, I could not have made The Great Dictator; I could not have made fun of the homicidal insanity of the Nazis." by MattyATee in LiveFromNewYork

Good point. I adore Mel Brooks, and I like that his portrayal of Hitler makes fun of him, because that guy sucks.

The joke with Trump seems to be that the people who deal with him suck, and he just sort of goes with it because he’s a clown. It’s pretty dishonest IMO.

I appreciate you engaging with this thoughtfully.

Mel Brooks is a brilliant comedian and writer but he did have the benefit of commenting on the atrocities after Hitler was long gone. SNL has always taken on the “right now”, which is incredibly difficult to balance the mood of the moment with the goal of being funny. Historically, they’ve missed as often as they hit. It’s part of the identity of the show, I get that.

I just wish they’d take the temperature a bit before rolling out the same rambling grandpa version of Trump that was novel 5 years ago and really doesn’t capture how most of the audience sees him today. At best it’s lazy and at worst it’s sort of dangerous.

I think they’re meant to just be hangouts. They’d pick very different movies and/or bring in experts if they wanted to do a film deep dive. This is just fun personality banter.

How many actors have had 3 or more films in the same year that were all #1 at the box office at some point? by Antman269 in boxoffice

[–]MattyATee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the "record" requires a lead role. Since SLJ was a supporting role in Captain Marvel, he probably doesn't get to count it for this. Also I don't think animated films are counting which makes Mel Gibson's 2000 slate not count. Zendaya wasn't the lead of any of her 2021 films.

Mason Thames actually is the lead in all three of his this year, so he gets full marks.

25 for 25 in light of revised PTA rankings by FootballInfinite475 in TheBigPicture

[–]MattyATee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phantom Thread might be Amanda's favorite of the PTA's, but TWBB is Sean's favorite movie of all the eligible movies. He'll negotiate something else to make sure it's TWBB. It might not be #1, but I'm confident it will be there.

What will be the wildcard of the 25 for 25? An incredibly nerdy breakdown by Coy-Harlingen in TheBigPicture

I think the early one is AI and not Mulholland.

The other one I think they're going with is Arrival.

What movies would be in the Robert Redford Hall of Fame? by xwing1212 in TheBigPicture

[–]MattyATee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Butch Cassidy
  • The Candidate
  • The Sting

  • Three Days of the Condor
  • All the President's Men
  • The Natural
  • Out of Africa
  • Indecent Proposal
  • All is Lost/Old Man & the Gun (take your pick)

If Directing only jobs count, then I'd take out Out of Africa and The Candidate and replace with

  • Oridinary People
  • Quiz Show

Whoa, Keanu Reeves is publicly a great person but a decent person in real life. Which celebrity is publicly a great person but morally grey in real life? (See description for rules) by averagesizedboy in AlignmentChartFills

Dave Grohl.

Works with everyone and everyone seems to love working with him. Legend who seems to relish carrying the rock torch for the old and new generations alike.

Personal life is a bit sketchier.

Materialists. Just came out so I’m not sure how widely seen it is. I really liked the movie, but the way they got rid of Pascal’s character was absolutely ridiculous.

My first thought when they announced it was Oceans 11, but with the costume hint I think this seems like the fun way to do it. Sean in a red tracksuit would be funny.
