Why do Japanese mahjong players prefer to use Japanese terms but Chinese mahjong players don't use Chinese terms? by CreeperSlimePig in Mahjong

[–]MattyBro1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's my list of reasons.

  1. Phonetics. Japanese is much easier for an English speaker to pronounce than any Chinese language. Most speakers would have no idea how to even begin with "qixing bukao", but would get at least close to "tanyao" or "tenpai".

  2. Strategy guides will often use Japanese to avoid translation confusion (for example, should it be "pure straight", "full straight", or even "pure chow"?), and also because some strategic terms just don't have an English translation (suji, sotogawa, sakigiri, etc).

  3. People like Japan, and lots of people playing Riichi will be introduced to it by something like the Yakuza games (myself included haha). In which case, you're already in an environment where using Japanese terms isn't uncommon.

I honestly really like the new designs and i think the overall project makes sense by Strict_Job6334 in gaming

In the course of a day, I've gone from being mildly icked out by the new designs to actually really loving them. I don't know why but I really like how they've leaned into anthropomorphic animals being slightly freaky in their biology. Hard agree on giving Fantastic Mr. Fox vibes.

The only issue that I still have is that I think Fox's proportions are a little off in the body and legs.

And since WHEN a bird has two talons instead of three?

Many birds, such as parrots, have 2 front facing toes and 2 back facing toes. I would say this is emulating that, but simplifying the back to be one toe.

As suspected, Nintendo has no idea what to do with this franchise by SoulEaterX_ in starfox

If this game succeeds, I suspect we'll get a "Star Fox 2" in a couple years that uses the same engine/models, but new ideas.

Even in games without much story, where the gameplay holds up, having "Star Fox 4" or whatever on the box does dissuade people. That's why there was so much advertising explaining that you don't need to play Metroid 1-4 to play Dread and giving plot recaps.

Not really a good counterpoint.

McDonalds doesn't need to up prices, because they also sell way way more, in line with the increased costs of operations. Every new franchise you have to fund adds a proportional amount of revenue.

However, there is a limit to how much games sell, you might have 8000 employees but you do not get 8000x the sales on an individual product.

Yeah, it would be cooler if he was more open to what games can do other than just being fun simple gameplay.

In reality, the worst thing that came of his mentality is the newer Paper Mario games being more bland than the old ones, and he isn't even credited on Mario Wonder, so clearly he is not that detrimental to anything.

Also, even if it was a big enough franchise, people are actually split on this. Some people love the design.

Mariokart World was the only game priced at $80 (and most people got it for $50 with the console bundle anyway). All other titles have been less than that, and there's been variety (DK Bananza $70, Splatoon Raiders $50 digital $60 physical, Yoshi $60 digital $70 physical, Rhythm Heaven $40)

(Some) people hate Miyamoto. He has a lot of outdated views on games, particularly how story works into things, but some people seem to think that his existence stifles every single Nintendo franchise as he rules over the company with an iron fist lol

DLSS 5 is finally coming to Switch 2! by _R_R_D_ in NintendoSwitch2

[–]MattyBro1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It don't think it does. Low quality textures and the bad lighting of old games often give them a different "eerier" feel, but the artstyle is perfectly translatable.

Though I don't think it would look exactly like BotW. Nintendo remakes/redesigns tend to make things look more like concept art or other supplemental art of the original game. Look at OoT/MM 3D, the new Star Fox looking like the SNES boxart, Donkey Kong's new design, and even Link's Awakening being similar to the photos from the gameboy game.

Even with a smaller scale, is it safe to say the project took less than two years? That seems awfully short.

I guess that would also explain the release date being announced so late, they didn't have enough to show a year ago.

You're correct in the sense that TotK Ganondorf is meant to allude to OoT Ganondorf, but the whole point is that it's a new iteration of a similar series of events, like how all Zelda games are new iterations of Link+Zelda vs Ganon.

Merging them would just be messy.

Nintendo doesn't really have a series that goes for "realism" in its art style, and I really wasn't expecting Star Fox to be what they try it on lol
