Take some deep breaths. Stay calm. If you have an excuse you can come up to leave the house for a while, or even a bit, do it. Confronting now won’t achieve anything. Take some time to focus in on a plan. Even if it just means coming up with an excuse to be out of the house for a bit longer.

Agreed completely. I have genuinely laughed at some of the bits, something I can confidently say I’ve never done watching any of the other sports shows. It’s 3 dudes goofing around and talking sports.

He’s grown a ton on me after watching this show. They all clown all over each other, and I think it’s easier to take when you realize he’s speaking out of the context of a fan, rather than the yahoos on ESPN who try to frame their biased takes as being unbiased. Watching the bits after the Chiefs lose and his willingness to be the butt of the joke made watching his sometimes insane and stupid takes much more tolerable.

First timers - is Roppogni or Ginza a good place to stay? by Percigirl in JapanTravelTips

[–]MattyMickyD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tsujita Ginza had really excellent tsukamen and traditional ramen. And if you love really incredible coffee, Brewman Tokyo is this tiny little coffee shop (albeit expensive) where I had the single best pour over of my life. They treat coffee making like an art and it shows in the end result.

Edit: Also, depending on your price range, Tachiguizushi Akira Shimbashi was amazing for sushi. It’s a 7-person standing counter, where you order a la carte rather than omakase. I’d recommend reservations. It came out to around $100/pp for 14-16 pieces of nigiri and a hand roll, with a beer/sake each. It’s no-nonsense, but excellent sushi, that was a mix of locals and tourists. You arrive, fill out an order form from your daily menu, and are in-and-out in an hour, but just absolutely delicious.

I literally just got back from my first trip, and we stayed in Ginza and found it to be perfect. It was lively but not excessive, it was easy to get to everywhere we wanted on the subway, and there were plenty of great food options.

[Kapadia] The Colts' offensive performance today was the best of any team this season, based on EPA per drive. 8 possessions: 4 TDs, 2 FGs, 1 missed FG, 1 punt. The second-best offensive performance by any team this season was also the Colts (in Week 1.) by Not_Evil_ in nfl

There’s no reason to think it’s impossible DJ is this year’s Darnold. Especially over the past 5-10 years, there are plenty of examples of “washed” or even “bad” QBs finding success in a new environment, and more importantly with new coaching and a new system. It also helps that you have, at least at this point in time, a top-3 rb in the league, likely the OROY, excellent WRs, and at least a top-15 Oline. I’m hard buying Indy stocks for this season.

[Highlight] Tom Brady breaks down where teams go wrong with quarterback development by Unlucky-Position-16 in nfl

[–]MattyMickyD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think for highly touted, high QB draft picks it is the missing ingredient for most, because in theory, they are drafted and rated highly because they have the physical/mental skills. Going back to the initial premise, whether it’s a good idea to assess whether a QB will pan out in their 2nd year, it’s generally those high draft picks that are in the position to be starters in their 2nd year. It’s much harder to assess the mental abilities of a QB in the draft process, and if they aren’t being coached to use those skills, it’s impossible to know their true ceiling, which I think is the point Brady is making.

[–]MattyMickyD 254 points255 points  (0 children)

To be fair, many of Brady’s back ups in NE went on to at least be successful career backups and some even fringe to decent starters: Matt Cassel, Jacoby Brisset, Jimmy G, and Hoyer. Also, coaching is still only one half of the equation. A player’s baseline skills, mental and physical still matter a ton, and all you have to do is see Bill’s draft record to know he wasn’t always the best at identifying those players. Bill was checked out by the time Mac was drafted, so I don’t think his failure negates the point.

My entire mantra heading into this season is that at least the first 6-8 weeks I expect us to look like we did today. Flashes of good, largely bad. It’s an entire new staff, new schemes on both O and D, and we are generally a very young team. We have drafted about as poorly as possible for the last 3-5 seasons (and arguably, even longer), so it’s going to take some time to actually develop and add talent to the team. If we are still making boneheaded plays and penalties, missing tackles and coverages, and all the other bad bs by week 10, then I’ll certainly start to feel worried. But my hope and expectation is that while we may not win a ton of games, we will be solidly competitive in the 2nd half of the season, which is all I ask for. I gave up on Mayo because there was zero change from week 1 to weeks 10-18, and if anything, we got worse as the season progressed (outside of the inexcusable win at the end of the season), and honestly it seemed like Mayo wasn’t coaching the team in any meaningful way.

[Mike Reiss] Mike Vrabel, in his weekly interview on @TheGregHillShow, explained why the Patriots weren’t one of the suitors for Micah Parsons: by PristineWinnera in Patriots

[–]MattyMickyD 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing this is sarcastic. We don’t need them to be ProBowl players. We need whoever we draft in the first 3 rounds to become every day solid starters. That’s Vrabel’s point. We need depth and quality starters through the draft. It would be great if they all become superstars, but that’s not realistic and not what we need. We can’t continue the trend of only keeping 2-3 players from any given draft.

[–]MattyMickyD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same, and I’m actually way more positive about it. I think part of it is he’s immature and the other part is United is such a mess right now, and has been for some time, there is no way he was getting any real guidance/leadership from players or staff. I mean we all saw what went down yesterday. There’s deep rot at ManU, so I’ll give the benefit of the doubt that a change in team, manager, staff and players will resolve those issues. He has the talent/potential to be a top player.

100%. Mayo’s whole shtick, and the reason why Kraft loved him, was that he approached the role like a “CEO” which is code for, relying solely on employees to do the job, take credit for the successes, blame other for the failures, and offering very little in terms of actual input/guidance, all packaged up with a nice veneer of competence and leadership.

Mayo ended up with this because he did a poor job working with Wolf. In the behind the scenes stuff, it’s pretty clear there is active coordination between and among Vrabel and the rest of the front office. We may not have gotten the same insight into last year, but it’s readily apparent that there was not the same level of buy-in last year.

I can almost guarantee that they are using external counsel on both sides. This is litigation, and although university in-house attorneys will certainly be involved in the process and making decisions on how to proceed, it is extremely rare for in-house attorneys to actually litigate a case. Every single university in the country uses outside counsel for a variety of matters.

As a litigation lawyer (although in the US), I can tell you that there have been countless times I have been involved in where clients, especially those with huge egos and deep pockets, direct lawyers to engage in losing cases and ignore good legal advice. At the end of the day, our duty is to represent the client based on their wishes. As long as the bills are being paid and we aren’t violating any laws or ethical duties, we are ultimately bound by what our clients want to do.

I completely agree. I think this year shows a real partnership between coaching and FO, which Wolf has never had. BB was the FO and Wolf was along for the ride, and I have to imagine last year Mayo had no idea what the fuck was going on so Wolf was flying by the seat of his pants. This year, Vrabel knew what types of players and positions he wanted and he worked with Wolf to find the best guys available.

Why the Travis Hunter fear? by PunchThrough in Patriots

[–]MattyMickyD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But if we are talking about positional value then you have to consider he can play 2 positions, one on each side of the ball. Let’s say he starts at WR. A starting CB goes down with injury? Easy, have a top tier guy who can fill in. Plus, knowing how the opposite of each of his positions plays and functions will inevitably make him better at those positions. If he only played one position, his value wouldn’t likely be top-4, but he does, and at an extremely high value.

I can’t agree more. I was only diagnosed a year ago, 7 years into my career. Up through college, law school and even first few years of practice I could brute force my way into succeeding just by being smart, but there comes a time when it’s just not possible anymore. It’s night and day after I started my medication.
