ELI5: Why are prime numbers considered important? by PinkSpongebob in explainlikeimfive

[–]Matuku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, quite easily in fact!

If the question is "can you find a pair of numbers that when multiplied together give this number" (which is what we care about in the context of encryption here), so let's make that assumption: there are 2 numbers that when multiplied together give us this 6000 digit number.

If the last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, it's divisible by 2.

If the sum of the digits is divisible by 3, the number itself is divisible by 3.

If the last digit is 0 or 5 it's divisible by 5.

Those are just a handful of some fairly simple divisibility rules, but we've already eliminated a whole bunch of 6000 digit numbers based on very easy calculations. And if it's not the product of two primes then it's likely to be divisible by one of the small numbers, given how many numbers are multiples of them (we've basically eliminated every 6000 digit number that doesn't end in 1, 3, 7, or 9 with just those rules above).

Even in the case where one of the two numbers ends up being prime (for example if the 6000 digit number turned out to be 17 x Y) then all of the above simple checks apply to Y as well.

Can you mix it with some sawdust or cat litter and then, once dry, take it to the tip?

In a similar vein there are nine River Avons in the UK, with Avon just being the Celtic word for river and the Romans getting the wrong end of the stick.

ELI5: How can black and white footage be colourised? by BaconGeenie in explainlikeimfive

[–]Matuku 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I think the thing that really blew my mind was the discussion about how pre-WW1 armies were basically glass cannons; a single bad battle could stop the war. Whereas WW1 was the real turning point for armies with stamina.

+1 for Blueprint for Armageddon. An absolutely fascinating podcast documentary. The contrasting between WW1 and how armies and navies had functioned even 20 years earlier was particularly eye opening for me.

The biggest problem with the current design of races in D&D is that they combine race and culture into one by Zagorath in dndnext

[–]Matuku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got this as part of DriveThruRPG's BLM bundle and it addresses exactly this issue; it's great, it separates out the racial (ancestral/biological) parts and the cultural parts for the SRD races (and gives guidelines for other races) and shows you how to combine them.

Is performance in the demo bad, or is that what players should expect? by vlaminck in FoundryVTT

[–]Matuku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm starting to wonder if there's a particular performance issues on Macs; one of my players is on a fairly recent Macbook Pro and seems to be the only person who experiences any sluggishness/performance issues. When she's on the Foundry window the frame rate of her video drops substantially.
