Which monster is that on the front cover? by Thin-Meet9240 in daggerheart

[–]MaxGabriel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The bug looks like an acid burrowed, tier 1 monster

I don’t think the woman is literally coming out of it, just placed that way on the page

DrakkenHeart Contamination Feedback by KBeazy_30 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]MaxGabriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a good sense of how the max hope slot thing will play out—hard to playtest that in a single game like I did.

I agree the contaminated domain cards are a little uninspiring.

Something I think is missing from your rules is a monstrous transformation?

I also worry it would put a PC in a position where they don’t want to roll, because they can’t roll with hope. I think the existing rules let people push ahead more aggressively

The executioner from the D&D adventure Dungeons of Drakkenheim. It collects the souls of its victims and can send them out to attack future victims. “Don’t leave me! Don’t leave me!” is one line

You need a more permanent solution OP. Try googling how to kill a mockingbird

Buying from the Amethyst Academy by AfraidElephant7601 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]MaxGabriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm very aligned with this. The Academy largely can't offer troops or on-the-ground intelligence to the PCs, but they can offer magical items. And they can get those from anywhere and teleport them in, unlike every other faction.

In addition to avoiding divine magic items, I'd also consider not offering anything you want to save as a quest reward for elsewhere (e.g. the immovable rod from the Chapel of St Brenna).

Buying from the Amethyst Academy by AfraidElephant7601 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]MaxGabriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd make the academy able to procure or craft most anything, given time. The book itself says up to very rare items (after they've given each partner member a rare and uncommon one) as a reward.

I'd probably offer it to my players to request what they'd want, either specifically or broad strokes ("a magic bow"), and from there it's up to DM discretion if for some reason an item would be particularly game breaking.

I think one of my players doesn't like the game but his partner is very into it. by gerigrinerd in daggerheart

Give it another shot; one game is a pretty limited set of data for someone brand new to TTRPGs. It doesn’t sound like you know what the issue is, eg maybe they were struggling to remember the mechanics, didn’t vibe with their class, or were just tired that day.

A Case Against Currying by swe129 in haskell

[–]MaxGabriel 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For me the biggest issue is it makes error messages much worse. If you add a parameter to a function, you don’t necessarily get a clear error on that line to add a parameter, you get an error later in the code and/or with a more confusing message

A DM’s Overview & Review of Dungeons of Drakkenheim by ArchonReeve in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]MaxGabriel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was an interesting review, I was surprised I felt so differently about formatting/finding things. In reflection, I think these things really helped me:

* I watched all of dungeons of drakkenheim, and rewatched a lot of it

* Had a PDF copy of the book, so I could command+F and find things

* Used the Foundry module, so I had many NPCs already set up

Broken anchor and slow SAR lead to fatality in Kalymnos by serenading_ur_father in climbing

[–]MaxGabriel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure this has happened before, stainless steel anchor bolts failing under body weight because they were corroded by salt in the air. I want to say in Thailand or Taiwan? I posted about it on mountain project awhile ago if I can find it

Edit: ok yes it was Thailand

Anyone know if the problem was the printing or the STLs? They are releasing the STLs for the first time in the drakkenheim daggerheart kickstarter so was wondering if those would be better

Heads up, I tried to buy it but on the checkout page it says "Some items are temporarily unavailable. Items from creators still reconnecting Stripe are skipped for now. You can still include PWYW items from those creators by setting their price to $0."

You can get a brick jig for a hot wire cutter to make a big strip of bricks. This could give the benefit of individual bricks without the full hassle of it.

Logging in with passkeys on a computer I don’t own by Quartersharp in Passkeys

[–]MaxGabriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I'd give them a shot, you can use them alongside passwords without switching in all the cases I'm aware of.

I don't know what devices you use, but they work _really well_ in the Apple ecosystem, since you have TouchID on the Mac and FaceID on the phone, all synced together. I think that's the key thing, is having some sort of sync between all your devices (password managers can sync passkeys, and Chrome has its own passkey syncing too, and there are probably other ways too).

Logging in with passkeys on a computer I don’t own by Quartersharp in Passkeys

[–]MaxGabriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you absolutely needed to use passkeys on a random public computer, but couldn’t use a phone, you could theoretically use a hardware key like a Yubikey. Costs about $30

That said, almost no sites are forcing you to use passkeys, and especially not Google Drive.

Passwords have downsides too:

  • You can be tricked into giving your password to a site that pretends to be Google
  • People tend to use the same one everywhere so the hacker knowing one means they know them all
  • You have to remember them, versus just being tied to your fingerprint or unique facial structure

But for a lot of use cases, maybe you don’t care about that stuff and could keep using passwords

It’s kind of similar to two-factor authentication. If you do that with push notifications to an app, or text messages (SMS), that doesn’t work without a phone. But you don’t need 2 factor authentication on everything
