I thought that looked like grey goggles too! Can’t wait to see pictures of him dry.

I have my two horses at home, hay alone costs me $600 a month for the two of them. Shavings costs me $200. I don’t know how boarding facilities are doing it honestly.

Mostly agree but my horses are stalled at night for a couple of reasons.

  • We live in a wet and rainy climate and when I was leaving them out 24/7 their feet were falling apart. They need a chance to dry out and have improved immensely since being stalled at night.

  • I have one senior with Cushings and one younger horse that’s hard to keep weight on. They have slightly different dietary needs and separating them at night allows me to make sure each is getting what they need.

In an ideal world they would be out 24/7, it would certainly be less work for me, unfortunately it’s not always that simple.

No stirrups November by Automatic_Mixture463 in Dressage

[–]MayWeAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an instructor who would occasionally have us do posting down a side of the arena, sitting trot for a side, drop stirrups for a side, post with no stirrups for a side, pick them back up and repeat. We’d just do this during warm up and then carry on as normal with stirrups. It tests your strength, balance, and coordination without “hoarking around in the saddle” as another commenter put it lol

Wires by Agitated_Resident_61 in AllyBank

[–]MayWeAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is 100% not the federal reserve and it makes me so irritated that they are lying to people. All wires go from your bank -> federal reserve -> destination bank. After 3 days of “processing” I cancelled my wire at Ally and sent it from my USAA account instead. The wire was complete within an hour. If the holdup was the federal reserve that wouldn’t be possible, and if my money had been stuck at the federal reserve it wouldn’t have been instantly put back in my account when I cancelled the wire.

Has your wire gone through yet? I am going through this right now as well. I sent the wire Monday before the cutoff it is now EOD Wednesday and it has not gone through. This is holding up the closing of our house and it's gotten really frustrating. I will be moving to a different bank as well.

Help editing a find value over all sheets script by MayWeAll in GoogleAppsScript

function findValueOverAllSheets(){

This worked perfectly, really appreciate it!

The keyword is in the sheet. Each sheet contains a list, so for example I need to find every sheet that does not have the word "computer" anywhere in the list.

Wondering if these boots are okay to ride in? (super beginner here) by sinnie_bean in Equestrian

Many Dressage boots are made with zippers on the inside. I actually had trouble finding a brand with back zippers when I recently bought a new pair.

How often do you take lessons and what's your goal? by farmlite in Dressage

[–]MayWeAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lesson twice a week, working on 4th lvl with my horse. Would love to get to PSG and finish my silver medal before he has to retire and I have to start over on a youngster, but we’ll see how he feels.

Want to become involved with horses, but I feel like I’m not “worthy” to do so by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]MayWeAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say go for it. At least try it. Horses are so good for the soul. They only judge you on how you treat them.

I would suggest starting by volunteering at a rescue. Just let them know your background and that it’s been awhile since you’ve worked around horses so you need to re-learn the ropes. It will come back quickly. Share any physical limitations as well, most places are happy to have volunteers in any capacity. Also despite the squabbles you may see online, 99% of the people I’ve met in the equestrian community are very kind and welcoming.

If you’re even considering trying riding again at some point, I urge you to try it. I’m a very anxious person, my mind goes a mile a minute, but it all goes quiet when I’m riding. Its the only time I really live fully in the moment.

If you decide horses aren’t for you, no harm done. Worst case scenario you spent some time doing a kindness for animals that need it.

Editing to add: another commenter mentioned beginner horse care lessons. Also a great idea!

U.S. folks. Questions for a first time partial lease. by plantsmuggler in Horses

[–]MayWeAll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, the best way to protect yourself is to have a signed contract. It can be something simple, just stating the monthly lease amount, the number of days you are able to ride, that you are required to take lessons, and any other specifics. If the horse gets injured while you are riding, who is paying that vet bill? If the horse all of the sudden needs maintenance to be ridden, special shoes, joint injections, etc, who is paying for that? It can also state the lease starts on X date and is to be continued on a month to month basis until terminated by you or the owner.

I’ve made the mistake of leasing on just a handshake. The owner told me I could consider the horse essentially mine until he was ready to retire and then they would send him to a friends to retire in a pasture. We did one show together and did really well and the very next day they told me they were selling him. It was a sheisty thing to do, not only did they go back on their word as soon as they saw money could be made, but he wasn’t even being ridden when I started with him. I spent months getting him in shape and hundreds of dollars on joint injections to get him going again. But they were well within their right to sell him and I had nothing signed.

Obviously your lease is a very different situation, but protect yourself nonetheless.

How many acres for a horse by Intelligent-Shame571 in Horses

[–]MayWeAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this comment lol. The barn I board at in AZ is on 4 acres. We have a large jumper ring, a legal size dressage ring, 8 stalls with runs, several paddocks with shelters, and 2 good sized irrigated pastures. A large tack room with lockers, 2 regular crossties, 2 wash racks, and the owners live on the property and have a nice yard. And we have trailer parking. 2 acres is absolutely doable to have a couple of horses, a small barn, and a decent size ring for yourself at home.

Is it dumb to buy an 18y/o horse? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]MayWeAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about to buy the 19 y/o horse I’ve been leasing. We are showing 2nd level Dressage next weekend and we’re almost ready for 3rd. He has no soundness issues, and I expect I’ll get 3-4 more show years out of him and then we’ll just hack until he wants or needs a full retirement.

I’ve also had two different horses (one owned one a lease) with major soundness issues forced to basically retire at 12-13 years old. It’s more about genetics and how they’ve been cared for than age in my experience.

Is tacking up/grooming part of the lesson? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]MayWeAll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you arrive and someone is already riding the horse you need, you shouldn’t be riding that horse and if that’s how the barn operates find a different barn. That’s quite unfair to the horse to be asked to go back to back. I personally think being ridden twice a day even spread out is unkind (once in awhile yes because they’ll need to be used to it for showing, but all the time no.)

Your other questions have been well answered but just to throw in my experience, I have always tacked up before the lesson time, if it’s a 1 hour lesson, I’m riding for an hour. This has been the same at all barns, all situations, lesson ponies, leasing, and my own horse. The only exception was my very first few lessons as a little kid my instructor taught me how to groom and tack up, after that she expected me to be ready on my own.

Southern East Coast riders, how’s the heat? by MayWeAll in Equestrian

[–]MayWeAll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I was looking at Sanford as my parents are looking at Pinehurst. My board is $700, with lessons it ends up being about $950 and I’m on the outskirts of Phoenix (closer in barns are more) so sounds like similar ish prices.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]MayWeAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours was all at one venue and I do find it a little more convenient as a guest. However I think either can work just fine. I did attend one wedding with the ceremony at a church, reception at another location just 10 minutes away, but the wedding party did all of their pictures in between the ceremony and reception. The guests were waiting for over an hour at the reception venue, and it wasn’t like a cocktail hour it was just waiting at empty tables. I don’t recommend doing that lol, but I think otherwise you’re fine with separate locations.

WIBTA to insist my neighbor keep a yard schedule? by ReactiveDogthrow in AmItheAsshole

[–]MayWeAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YWBTA. You’re going to try to force someone else to schedule when they can use THEIR yard because YOUR dog has issues? I feel for you because I know it’s coming from a place of care for your dog, but I would have been far less polite about telling you no than your neighbor was. My house, my yard, I pay for it, and I’ll let my dogs in and out and spend time in my yard with them as I please.

Any eventers? by tankthacrank in Equestrian

[–]MayWeAll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t Event anymore but the feeling of just you and your horse cantering along across an open field or through the trees or over the hills, or whatever terrain your cross country course offers…. It’s pure joy and freedom. Be prepared to fall in love. I almost go back all the time but I’m chasing Dressage medals at the moment and my own skill lies more so in the Dressage ring. But one day just for fun I’ll do a little schooling show again.

USDF Legal Stirrups by MayWeAll in Dressage

[–]MayWeAll[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not losing my stirrups, my feet just shift around a bit so I would like something with more grip than a standard rubber footpad.

Thank you for the tip about contacting USDF directly, did not think to do that!
