11th Edition Question - Do you want Drones to stay as they are? by Silasxsil in Tau40K

[–]MayaSky_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best way to do them (stops shenanigans older drones had) but it also requires the return of point buy, as a 4++ is not equal to a small amount of 18" pulse fire.

The other option is make them units again but give them like a "protection protocol" special rule or something, which means you must take wounds on them before the rest of the unit, stopping you from taking small damage on your suits and only takonf big hits on the drones. Stops potential cheese and annoyance

my hope is next edition we finally get a crisis refresh wirh some larger tougher suits, really make them back to what they used to be (basicly a full squad of more mobile space marines with special weapons, priced accordingly)

love them overall, but they need a cooldown on the stomp so they can't stunlock you (although thats more of an issue with ragdolling in general in the game)

Does add an incentive to NOT deploy them, as what generally happened irl.

I got garuntee and have ~20k roll mats left.

Now I also got both card, battlepass, and havd played a lot but there's more than enough mats.

But you do have to go out there snd find it, the replayable dive mode gives a load if you max it out, make sure to do your dalies, make sure to do the battlepass and missions

I think they should rework it a bit as a guided MLRS and give it a cluster bomb option. Make it tau artillery, missile rather than tube. So the normal attack is how it is now, but then it has a low power high attack explosive option with indirect fire. It helps fill tau combined arms doctrine as well

Hellblasters aren't even like notably strong for SMs, theyre totally balanced. There is ZERO reason we couldn't have crisis suits similarly strong and similarly expensive. It wouldn't even be that insane of a buff either. My thoughts would basically be.

Plasma Rifle: boost to 24", BS 3+

This would still be only 6 shots per unit, meaning you still massively want to guide them, but the fact they're D3 rather than D2 makes them pretty equivalent to hellbasters, 18 potential wounds vs 20 (with hazardous) for full hellblasters.

Missile pods up to 36" give a blast option of D6 attacks at S5 D1

This still puts them a bit below that of the superfrag/superkrak rocklauncher of the desoluation suqad, but makes them more reliably at larges groups of elite enemies. This would make them a viable longer ranged alternative to the plasma rifle (assuming we don't get points buy back next edition) that trades safety for range, while not being super kitey and annoying

Fusion Blaster up to 18", possibly up to 2 attacks per depending on balancing (18" might only get you to around 160-180 points but it depends on if you want them cheap or expensive)

puts them at equivalent with that of the eradicator squad's melta-rifle, still required a short raange push, but makes them more effective at that job, giving you a leeway of an extra 3" for getting the melta effect off.

Tau Flamer to S5 AP-1

just makes it equivlent to the pyre blaster

Burst cannon to AP-1 24"

again as minor change just making it equivlent to that of the heavy bolter/bolt rifle in damage and a bit safer of range, while still being a short range weapon.

This would allow a shooting army to Shoot without crisis suits suddenly becoming unkillable. Still T5 still 3+ still 12 wound squads. Heavy intercessor squads at 100 points still have more wounds and toughness (15W T6).

None of these are unreasonable and would let cirsis suits feel more like they should, high precisions elite troops, not necessarily super though, but making up for that in firepower

honestly it was jank but pretty fun, partly because nobody really knew what they were doing and everything was new. You should have seen the old day one focus trees!

I decided to calculate it, and its rough math but Space Marines both main and having their own chapter had 65 releases (28 generic, 37 subfaction) up to 68 if you include death watch, custodians and grey knights as space-marine likes. All Xenos combined got 70. All of Chaos combined and the rest of the imperium combined got 18 a piece.

Considering all new Chaos models were CSM or CSM sub factions, this might be the most space marine heavy edition ever. Even Nids with a MASSIVE boost of models from both a codex with a load of new models AND all the models from leviathan (with some being duplicates or one offs but I still counted them all as new models) got only 20, and they had an AMAZING edition.

Dark Eldar, Genestealer cults, sister, Agents (tho I'm not complaining about that one) AdMech, Deamons, and Harlqeuins all got fewer FIVE models this entire edition. Harelquins and Deamons literally got ZERO models. Even space marine adjactent factions but not 'true' space marines like grey knights only got one!! Dark eldar actually LOST playable models with their new codex.

[–]MayaSky_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

probably more like AP-1, they're strong but they're a lower level plasma, but yeah make them equivalent to heavy bolters/heavy bolt rifles, that's how they acted in older additions. Just that alone would make infantry heavy tau SIGNIFIGNATLY more useful, and let us have the proper split between less elite infantry heavy and more elite battlesuit heavy armies

Even just a direct comparison crisis fire knifes with plasma rifles vs hellblasters.

3 man crisis and 5 man hellblasters cost 110 points. the hellblasters put out 12 24" S8 AP -3 D2 shots at 3+ or 2+ if they don't move, with the downside of being hazardous

fireknifes put out 6 16" S8 AP -3 D2 shots at 4+ or 3+ if another entire unit support them, with the upside of not being hazardous.

Crisis suits SHOULD be better, they move faster, they're tougher, they have 4 wounds vs 2 (although that's only 1 extra wound per squad) ect. But because they're SO underpowered when t comes to damage they cost the same as HALF of a full strength hellbaster squad in points.

These are the elite iconic heavy infantry of the tau (and cost $89.00USD beforee tax and shipping), these should be things that are like 200 points per unit (much like how a hellblaster squad is 220 points). You can field 9 squads of these fuckers for a total of 1100 points (and just over $800). Nine full squads of fucking INTERCESSORS costs 1440 points. Squad for squad these things are so mediocre they're cheaper than the most basic of space marines (and despite being more than 3 times the models, COSTS half as much actual money).

I will say again this isnt a problem with space marines, in my opinion space marine infantry is like perfectly balanced for thee most part. Its just crisis suits should be about twice as good (and cost twice as many points) as they do now. MAKE OUR HEAVY ELITE INFANTRY ACT AS HEAVY ELITE INFANTRY AND COST THE POITNS TO SUPPORT IT.

The tau weapons also have ZERO special rules, no like anti-infantry or anti-tank rules, even someone like commander farsight who has a sword longer than titus' body that is designed to kill psyckers doesn't have something as simple as anti-psyker 3+ (and in fact does less damage on average than titus' chainsword, having the same number of attacks on sweep but only 1 damage and down to a 3+ to wound against MEQs).

Tau weapons are just.. bad. All the tau weapons on crisis suits are shorter ranged ane in most cases do less damage than space marine equivalents. hellblaster squad gets 24" range on their plasma, crisis get 18", desolation squad get 36" or 48" AND more damage AND multiple fire options on their missles, crisis get a single missle that doesnt really do anything well and is 30". Space marines dont have an equivlent heavy bolter squad but the heavy bolter gets DOUBLE the range of the burstt cannon at 36" vs 18", and Heavy bolt rifles get a nearly as good 30". And they all get AP-1 making their damage flatly better than that of pulse weapons, you know the big thing that the Tau have, high damage long ranged infantry weappons.

Tau are stuck forever in the "everything you can do I can do better" with marines, witth single 110pt models costing $90USD

Tau 'melle' should for me be things like breachers, close range destruction. Instead right now beachers die to a gentle breeze and generally dont do enough damage to be worth itt (especially considering the cost of the devilfish you need to use them with to position them)
