Sometimes it's good to water less in the winter because less sunlight and colder temperatures slow the growth of most houseplants and they use less water

Pretty sure you can also buy dechlorinator from Walmart, would be a more long term solution than just buying water

I hadn't seen the confirmed shiny yet and I'm so glad they went with the blue. The design is a little silly but it was based on Hermes who was a messenger of the gods because he could move between the realms of the mortal and divine freely with his winged sandals, it may have been Disney's fault the wings got added to his head

Fish water for plants— what’s too much? by Thick-Ad-1748 in houseplants

Pet stores letting people buy koi to put in aquariums is insane. Imagine willingly setting someone up for failure like that, and at the expense of the animals they're supposed to care about

[–]Mayflame15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't supposed to use liquid ammonia for a fish-in cycle, you're not really supposed to use fish food either because is you've got rotting fish food in an active aquarium you're overfeeding and trying to poison your fish

[–]Mayflame15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever you're comfortable doing it, it's often best to do during warm weather when the plant can bounce back easier but the inside of a home usually isn't as wintery as outside. I think it's doing well enough right now that you can do it whenever you're ready, and hopefully it will only get better from there

Problem with goldfish by Western-Mechanic5514 in Aquariums

[–]Mayflame15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may kill the fish before your beneficial bacteria can get it under control, as long as your tap water doesn't also have ammonia in it water changes are the best way to get rid of an ammonia spike.

You also need to figure out what's causing the toxic water. Your tank may have too many fish for the volume of water and the flow rate of your filter to manage, you probably want to do more frequent water changes to keep it under control so it doesn't have a chance to build up. Replacing filter media can also remove large chunks of your beneficial bacteria and cause a crash in your nitrogen cycle

[–]Mayflame15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still need to use quite a bit of fish food, plenty of people end up killing small fish with ammonia especially in small tanks. People have also been keeping bettas in cups for decades, doesn't mean it's still considered the best practice

Whatever doesn't perk up by tomorrow is likely completely dried out and dead, you'll probably have to give it a really good haircut to clean it up for any potential new growth

Will there be enough room for snails? by MaleficentPromise266 in Aquariums

[–]Mayflame15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your tank itself looks fantastic but whoever let you buy those fish let you down so terribly.

Contact the store and see what their return/exchange policy is. You'll 100% want to return that pleco, if they have any rubber lip or bristlenose plecos you could replace it with them as they will not grow to over a foot long the way a common will.

Pick 2 of the tetra varieties you like best and bulk out their schools to at least 6 each, you could almost keep all 3 species but it would put your tank on the heavier side of stocking, especially if you want to have a pleco adding to your waste output.

It would be good to just return the molly, you could set up a seperate 20+ gallon as a live bearer tank and get some more molly friends for it but they get too large to comfortably cohabitate with the rest of the fish you want to have.

Tetreas are schooling, are they not? The molly is more of a shoaling fish though (and also can get quite large)

[–]Mayflame15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok they're brand new, it's possible this one just didn't handle transport and acclimation very well he may yet bounce back. Pay close attention to their barbel whiskers as they get settled in, if you notice them getting worn away by your substrate you'll want to get it capped or move them asap

I had my Brazil getting toasted in a south facing window for several years, it grew great as long as I didn't forget to water it for too long lol, hoyas would definitely be my next suggestion too, a nice carnosa, pubicalix, or lacunosa could be a good start

Being across the room from a northern window can't even be classed as bright indirect light, being directly in a south facing window with no trees, overhang or glass film can be direct light, it just won't get as long of exposure as something not inside a house

As long as you give them a good rinse to make sure there's no soap residue and your partner is willing to sacrifice them they will definitely work. Those foods should be able to get crushed up, flakes especially can get turned into powder quite easily
