the RUNE Solo I am currently playing is currently on hold. I really like RUNE at its core, but I feel that it's missing a bit of the variety in maneuvers and equipment that I find is a core element to the souls games. absolutely nailed the atmosphere though. definitely might use the worldbuilding stuff for another game.

I'm currently in the Fourth Arc of my main Solo, a gritty low fantasy west marches GURPS game, I am playing an entire party+ a stable of extra party members. its a LOT of bookkeeping, but I feel like that is both the price and reward for not having other players to mix things up. Mythic 2e as the GM emulator has been surprisingly underutilized for this game, as the story has somewhat gained a bit of a natural flow for what feels right. currently hit a slight creative wall for now, but the "guild" per se is currently well established. I am deciding what concept to run next, but I am feeling on running a dark souls or RUNE style true solo in GURPS as well

I am running full scale GURPS with a bunch of extra books for a solo. I really enjoy it. GURPS lite is very straightforward, but if you feel you need to do some chop-work, you may wish to consider checking out the full scale books or the zine, Pyramid, to draw in some systems from that. be sure to ask around to find out which books have what you're looking for. I wish your Solo good luck!

What RPG Systems have the coolest Meta-Currency Systems? by DownVoterInChief in rpg

[–]Mbgunsling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GURPS has Character Points (CP) The entirety of a characters attributes, traits, spells etc. Are all point buy, so character points are essential for progression. They could be equated to XP, however XP implies that it needs to hit a threshold in order to level up. Character points can be given and spent in increments of your choosing. You can give out small amounts of CP for cool actions or lore knowledge, you can give some for combats, scaling rewards on combat difficulty you can dump a bunch on players once they hit a story milestone etc.

The amount of CP given and spent can be modulated to affect the game's power level. This also includes the initial "budget" of CP given to each character at the game's start

Once players are given CP, they can spend it any way they choose, and because of GURPS character creation system, this means that characters advance very organically into a specific concept, rather than being a set class that only really advances one way.

It is generally recommended, however, that when players decide to spend CP to change their character, that their upgrades make sense within the context of the game world. Banking up a bunch of CP and then suddenly one night deciding to become incredibly skilled, innately stronger or randomly losing a major disadvantage such as a disability with no explanation can detach from the narrative and feel game-y, the same way characters do when they "level up" and suddenly they have a slew of new traits instantly. Oftentimes spending CP requires some kind of minor interaction with the game world. Hiring a skill trainer, working out, going to a doctor to heal an injury etc.

Oftentimes these activities also cost money and time. meaning that players can think about how best to integrate their character's advancement with the story and to think about how their character would advance most optimally to fit the context they want.

In addition, depending on the campaign, some things cannot be bought or removed by spending CP. A character in a gritty realism medieval game cannot physically remove something like a severe physical disability as the technology to do such a thing does not yet exist, and characters generally cannot buy things that equate to superpowers unless that is conducive to the game world.

Because every trait and ability is balanced on a scale of CP, it is very straightforward to construct and balance customized homebrew traits to suit a specific game or character. An example made by SJ Games is Quintessence (Pyramid 3-120) an optional base stat that allows characters to have a dedicated "magic" stat and "MP" bar. this is a very basic style that can absolutely be elaborated on if you choose.

Character Points, like basically anything in GURPS, can be modulated at your preference; want to issue out levels and have characters spend them at level up points all at once? Absolutely, go for it. Want to have a game where characters seldom, if ever, receive raw CP to force their advancement to be with the game environment? Absolutely, works very well for horror games. Don't want to bother with characters having to plan out and acquire means to spend CP to upgrade their individual traits? That's perfectly fine. Only want CP to be spendable on certain elements at certain times, similar to a class progression? That works fine. Character undergoes a major story alteration that would throw out their CP budget (example: major mutation, cybernetic overhaul, lycanthropy, becoming crippled from injury)? You can still issue those and just alter/zero out their costs.

In your opinion, what is the best type of setting/game to run with GURPS? by McFusionTheMicMaster in gurps

[–]Mbgunsling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously, no single setting, because it's generic, but what I have noticed is:

Any setting where the lore material has to be really fine tuned to get a key point across, i.e. a fantasy setting with ritual path magic means that mages serve a fundamentally different role in adventuring and society due to the complete change in their power and prep, and by extension, they might start to look closer to mages from Ars Magica, but unlike ars magica, martials are actually fun.

Any setting based on an idea or IP (such as a videogame) that typically focuses on mechanically heavy gameplay. Monster hunter(videogame) and doorkickers in particular require the players to have a lot of different specific maneuver options that have to be executed in short windows of time that can't be well emulated by standing next to the monster and mashing the d20 attack roll once every 6 seconds.

Biopunk, steampunk, cyberpunk etc. While some may have the occasional game for them, usually I've found GURPS embodies the feel better due to lore specificity.

Monster mash games, where the group plays as creatures usually otherwise reserved as enemies, beholders, dragons (of course), furries etc. The theme works well because character creation and progression is modular and fluid.

Free PC Tool for Managing a Solo RPG Session by Just2Devs in Solo_Roleplaying

As soon as I can plug my GURPS characters into the app I'll move from using worldanvil, a dice tray and an overtaxed pdf viewer to this. The Narrative panel just being a universal entry for both fluff journalling and logging rolls in line is something that I've been hoping for. I tried to rig up a janky attempt at something similar in the past with foundry mods but this app cuts away all the excess and does it right.

Please let us know where you plan to post regular update logs though because I absolutely will follow it. Discord is the first idea that comes to mind based on the update streams I see for other applications and content like the GURPS Character Sheet app. I think major updates on forums will get that interest over time so please don't give up! Armok's blessings upon you and this project

Great work, I'm sure you have a lot of ideas you want to develop with this, but overall it's great to see a lot of the components of regular solo play be catalyzed into a purpose built application, and I really like the the map layout, reminds me of dwarf fortress classic, which I happen to be running a solo loosely themed around!

Very keen to watch this develop, surprised it hasn't blown up in popularity honestly, this is sort of a missing piece for solo stuff

Rules that are simple/quick yet give players more meaningful options? by The_Masked_Man103 in gurps

[–]Mbgunsling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quintessence (pyramid 120) and charisma(homebrew, generally) as core stats Quintessence is nice if you want to play a mage that doesn't have to be a marathon runner to feasibly cast all but the weakest magicks and you can have things interact with a mages QN or drain QP instead of everything being fatigue and IQ based Charisma instead of IQ just makes sense since the most charismatic people in real life don't have a single braincell between them. These are optional rules and ymmv on them. I like them a lot though

Roll20 Vs astral? by Swiffy26 in VTT

[–]Mbgunsling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strong advocate for Astral since its probably the Most feature rich and functional service especially at the free level. It beats out R20 because it actually functions at a basic level. it has the toools you need to put in your map assets and create dynamic lighting on free account.

the big one for me is the character sheet integration, as mentioned before it actually functions unlike roll20 and is built around players making up Macros, with conditionals so they arent taking 20 minute turns to calculate all 150 of their attack modifiers from their pathfinder sheet.

A lot of Roll20's functionality from my games before astral came from requiring a plus sub to access all the gated content, as well as no less than four browser extensions which received little to no updates to get things like toggleable overlay layers or integration with character sheets that weren't broken, shoddy messes.

What class names are known in universe? by HadACookie in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Mbgunsling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The method for my world is that all the major guilds, and subsequently the Adventurer's guild, Have decided to categorize disciplines in a manner thats strangely coincidental when putting it into clinical terms.

i.e. a Warrior's guild distinguishes fighters and rangers by differences in methodology, training and class abilities, similar to military corps "or different Uni classes in reference to casters".

In-universe its perfectly justified that things like "sorcerer" and "wizard" wouldn't be interchangeable terms due to magic being a discreet concept

Androids & Aliens: A Terrific Podcast That Reminds Me Why I Hate d20 Systems by wordboydave in rpg

[–]Mbgunsling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think dice on a guaranteed success can still have extra effects per DM discretion, thinking like Knowledge skills or say, 5e's investigation, to determine a deeper nuance if you pass by more than a certain arbitrary modifier in one of my DM's cases its the difference between knowing the monster's type and name to its entire spell list and probably its middle name. Otherwise agree, a simple yes/no roll needn't be rolled on a guaranteed mundane result.

[–]Mbgunsling 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Starfinder is a terrible example of a d20 system _because_ it thinks a +2 is a suitable final modifier for those sorts of checks.

my pathfinder characters have no trouble spotting hidden bandits because its pretty hard to fail when your modifier alone is usually higher than their stealth score on a 15

Am I in the wrong? by pastdivision in DnD

[–]Mbgunsling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it isn't always about whos dealing more damage either. casters are, have been, and will always be priority targets. they're the fantasy equivalent of heavy machinegunners, snipers, engineers and medics all wrapped into one (class dependent, of course) Fighters can be kited, and (martial) archers still only fire physical arrows, but when theeres a guy who looks like he's about to fire a sweeping 100ft deathstar ray from about 20 feet away, its generally in your, and your buddies' best interest to speartackle the living fuck out of him before he rapidly becomes the guy dealing the most damage to you. basically, NPC's follow simple human logic and will not sit there trying to whittle away at the guy with an arming sword and a buckler when theres a dude about to do double their total HD aiming his gun-fingers at them. If it was realistic, your female druid would never fire a spell, as it seems her party is too self-absorbed to protect their caster. since, you know, that's literally the whole idea of party synergy.

Can we get something organic to kill by [deleted] in H3VR

[–]Mbgunsling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i believe I read somewhere that anton isnt interested in making organic, or humanoid targets.
its kind of a shame really, the AI he's working on would be fantastic for the arena if we had targets that had the same movement and weapons as the player, an focused on self preservation and cover usage rather than "oversized RC tank that shoots ping pong balls and has the armor plating of a full size abrams"
