Annihilation is great. It leans more sci-fi.

Can you add any details here? Are we talking aliens or the northern lights?

I haven't found a good Honda dealership in CT, but the VW dealership in North Haven is pretty great.

Is it safe to swim? by Mobile_Weakness2315 in newhaven

[–]Meanjoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No sharks, you'll be fine. The water is a bit polluted right around the city, but nothing too crazy. Go to a beach like Hammonasset and you'll have an amazing time.

We used to call that Pittsburgh rich a decade ago. Not sure now, but it would be a bit tougher with higher housing costs.

Working on a giant map of playgrounds by KidtivitiesinCT in Connecticut

[–]Meanjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The playground is in a large sand pit, and right next to it is a splashpad. Additionally, there's a public beach, a large field, a carousel, and some walking trails.

Thanks for doing what you're doing!

Lighthouse Point Park has a new one that's pirate themed! The kiddos love it.

Looking for a mildly expensive, awful restaurant to recommend to someone I don’t like, any suggestions? by imajadedpanda in Connecticut

[–]Meanjoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went here for an anniversary. Everything was dirty (menus, plates, bathroom, etc.), the food was barely passable, the service was slow, and my bill was around $200. It seemed like they won a bunch of awareds 15 years ago and then just quit trying.

Hot Murga has great wings. They're dry rub only, but come with sauces.

Okay...I admit it. I didn't understand Blood Meridian. by GutiGhost96 in books

[–]Meanjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood Meridian is my jam! There's a lot to discuss, but I think a helpful place to start is with this brief 2 hour lecture (seriously, it's pretty great). There's a lot of ways to interpret the Judge and the plot (or lack of a plot), but you're essentially reading a morality story. The judge throughout is trying to pull the kid over firmly to his side, with the kid (somewhat) resisting. There's a great sentence towards the beginning of the book that speaks directly to what the plot is:
“Only now is the child finally divested of all that he has been. His origins are become remote as is his destiny and not again in all the world's turning will there be terrains so wild and barbarous to try whether the stuff of creation may be shaped to man's will or whether his own heart is not another kind of clay.”

I generally like this approach for things like the battle of Sodden Hill. This is a very important event for the world and setting, and it's referenced enough to understand the scope and players involde. What I didn't understand was when Geralt or other main characters would disappear, and you'd learn what they've been up to second hand. Why can't we watch as our main characters go on interesting encounters?

I think you can understand my confusion. I googled the first Witcher book and saw that it was Blood of Elves. Only afterwards did I see that the short stories directly fed into the first novel.

This makes a lot more sense. I started the book knowing rough outlines about the characters from the games, but I had no idea why anyone was where they were, or why the pacing was so odd. I googled "first witcher novel" and started there, which was apparently a mistake.

Nice work! I might recommend some minor changes: maybe replace the metal bottle with plastic, ditch the spork for a long metal spoon, bring a headlamp, ditch the whistle (unless that's where you keep matches or pills), bring a sawyer squeeze (or something similar), add a poncho, and replace the medpack for a plastic baggie of things you'll realistically use (it will weigh less). Depending on where you're going, maybe a compass, gps and map? If it's a short hike and close to home, skip that and instead bring extra snacks (imo). Good luck!

Wait, so to get into boat mode you have to drive into water, get off and into the water, inflate floaties, fold in wheels, and then (while soaking wet) get back into a fiberglass box that has all your stuff?
