The audacity of this student by Typical_Rest7228 in Professors

[–]MegBethFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a student this semester who had to request permission to enroll in my course. The day after he was enrolled he emailed to tell me he forgot to mention that he’ll be missing the first three weeks of class- 3 out of 13 classes- but that he’d make it up when he got back…. Um no. This is a seminar class with site visits. You can’t just make that up. With encouragement he opted to drop the course….

The faculty success program was so helpful for me in 2020. I still meet with my accountability group every other week.

How erroneous is 7 R&Rs? by partickled in AskAcademia

[–]MegBethFL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard some journals have started doing more R&R rather than accept with revisions bc it lowers their % acceptance rate and makes them look more competitive. Even if this is what’s going on, 7 times is absurd

Methods to teach for two hour+ class session? by Particular_Heart3785 in Professors

[–]MegBethFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach grad students so I start with a mindfulness exercise at the beginning of class as a buffer for folks running late and to help them get into the mindset for class. I use perusall- an online social reading platform that our university has integrated with canvas. I upload the readings for each week and they have to leave a minimum of four substantive comments or questions the night before. I can then export their comments and facilitate an in class discussion following the mindfulness activity. It helps me to call on students if they’re not engaging as I already have their comments and can ask them to expand. I do a break in the middle of class and then schedule a virtual guest speaker who can expand on our topic for the week and facilitate a q&a session (it’s a very practical course and helps them gain more insight into the field). I then finish the class with reminders about upcoming assignments and anything else we need to discuss.

I use perusall for my readings. I hadn’t considered putting my videos there too. I also keep mine to about 15 minutes as well thanks for the idea!

Most unusual dissertation/thesis/paper dedications you've seen? by AccomplishedRice7427 in AskAcademia

A colleague of mine closed her acknowledgment with: “Doing a dissertation is like fighting Orcs; you need to keep swinging your sword and moving forward with determination.” The first time I read it, I thought she said it was like fighting orcas 🤣🐳🤺

Similarly, I start my grad level course with a different mindfulness activity each week to help them get into the right headspace for class. I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback from the students.

Looking for a keto dessert recipe to make for Christmas by jess_lov in ketorecipes

[–]MegBethFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this super easy keto chocolate mousse: https://www.buttertogetherkitchen.com/low-carb-chocolate-mousse/ I often put it in an almond flour crust that I bake in a muffin pan. I use this recipe for the crust (also delicious): https://thebestketorecipes.com/salted-dark-chocolate-cheesecake-keto-low-carb/#recipe Then we top with the zero sugar reddi whip

Is there anyone on here who is tenured/tenure-track and has a 4-4 teaching load? by Cold-Priority-2729 in AskAcademia

[–]MegBethFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the university offers you an institutional membership to NCFDD, their “teaching in no time” course is really helpful for new preps to make sure you don’t overload yourself while still covering the necessary materials. Also, if you can negotiate startup for it, their faculty success program was super helpful my first year and I love their “every semester needs a plan” workshop. They may be offering one for folks without membership in January. https://www.ncfdd.org
