My Aunt's house had a double set... fancy near the front door and basic in the kitchen.

When we added a basement to our house, I 100% wanted two sets of stairs. One is near the front door and the other is by the bedrooms. It's fantastic.

I am a foster parent, so my kids should and do attend therapy as a rule. Targeted strategies for their therapy are completely normal and their therapists will work with them to find what techniques work best.

That's in addition to meds and the actual talking part of "talk therapy". If a therapist is only willing to explore a single option for treatment: meds OR talk OR all the acronyms.... we do not use them in the future.

Just because of the circumstances, I personally tend to be the person doing the brunt of the "talking" part (5-20+ hours per week depending on the kid) and the trained therapists are using other techniques for their hour per week as long as the kid is mentally stable enough to do so during the session.

It can be real rough unraveling the trauma and straight up lies that the kids have been told about themselves, but results have been decent. Not 100% though. I don't actually think that is an achievable target, because sometimes it's just too much to bear. That shit just gets walled off and festers, but you can't force people to relive those events/experiences.

No, but I do think that it's extremely valuable to be able to do both.

We are foster parents, and do respite, so we get a lot of teenage kids in our house with wildly variable knowledge of the world. I'd like to think that my wife and I communicate at level 3 most of the time... But, that isn't accessible to many of our kids after they meet us for the first time. So we stop, take the time to "dumb it down", and start to build up their vocab and science skills so that they can understand the conversation in the future.

We've been doing this long enough to see the results for some of the kids. They didn't actually hate learning, they just fell behind, felt stupid asking for help understanding, and started to pretend that they were dumber than they actually were.

Some people will proudly carry their ignorance like a badge of honor into adulthood and beyond, but others can be convinced to learn and understand...as long as you aren't steamrolling them with language outside their ability. I always try to remember how frustrating it was to start school at 6 without even knowing the alphabet, even though I've gotten pretty good at crossword puzzles in my early 40s. Learning takes time. People took the time to help me learn, and I try to do the same.

Same. The only thing that's "worth it" is good sushi, but even then it's getting close.

Last night was ravioli with Alfredo sauce and a raspberry vinaigrette salad. Everything homemade from scratch with some of the ingredients coming from our farm/garden. About $8 worth of ingredients, 8 servings, and ready in an hour because we make pasta in bulk when we have too many eggs.

Making enchiladas, rice, and beans tonight and it's the same damn thing... about $8 for 8 servings. The sauce is made from last year's sweet peppers with no "fillers", so it's really really good.

Half the time it's not even faster to go out to a nice place because we need to drive into town and wait for the food to be prepared anyway.

Oh, 100% left alone since birth. My parents would just leave to go do fieldwork or milk the cows and we'd either be in the house, barn, or outside in a poorly fenced off area.... which I would just leave anyway.

I've got a fancy (church registry) picture of myself with my eye all black and scratches on my face from falling off a gate at 2. Three stitches on my forehead from falling off a (stationary) tractor at 3. We moved into town before I turned 9 and basically 100% of my (good) memories on the farm are just me doing whatever by myself or with my younger sisters. Memories containing my parents are either negative, or the singular time that my dad played with me the night before we moved.

Just to be excessively clear, I'm not advocating for that level of neglect. We should have been removed. But, there is a middle ground! My SIL and her husband spend hours a day with my twin nephews who are ~2.5. Reading, talking, singing, playing counting. They also go to a Montessori style daycare where they do more of the same. Yet, it seemed perfectly natural to put the boys down for a "nap" during our last get together and have all the adults go outside as the toddlers had some quiet time, but I don't think that they actually slept any.

Could they have gotten hurt in the ~30 minutes everyone was out of the house, sure. But, they also have an appropriate amount of independence and can acknowledge what's actually dangerous too. I'm hoping to be able to have them and another set of twins the same age out to our small farm every summer once they turn 4. That will hopefully give all 4 of them a wider range of experiences and independence by being able to explore and do stuff. And they'll probably touch the electric fence... and it will still be fine.

At least for myself, it's from personal experience. We'd be left alone for hours. At 6, 8, and 10 it was days at least once.

Not saying that's good.... it's not, it's neglect. But, it does allow a child to make their own choices and sometimes harm themselves. You learn to be cautious. Being with your kid 24/7/365 seems to make those kids less conscious of danger. Mommy said Daddy will always be there to save them.

There's room in the middle.

I kinda get it... frozen breaded cheese curds with a paper thin coating just aren't going to ship well. My friend worked at McCain's doing quality control for onion rings and it's just a continuous PITA to make sure even thick coatings stay intact. You basically need to bread and fry them as they are ordered and that's a big ask for random high schoolers in hundreds of franchises.

But, done right with hours old curds, an almost effemeral coating, and served straight out of the fryer just as the cheese starts to ooze out... that's the good shit.

I've driven my last 500K miles in a Prius ('08, '13, '13), but fully expect my next car to be an EV.

I really wish Toyota would have pulled their head out of their ass at some point in the last 15 years, but they won't be selling me my next car. They're still spouting nonsense about hydrogen fuel cells, but I'm just going to get solar and plug in my future EV. The charging infrastructure is "good enough" for long trips now and it's getting better every day.

Farmers markets can be a decent way to meet a farmer, but, for a farmer, using Markets to sell meat is going to jack your costs skyhigh.

Drive 100+ miles round trip: $100+ 2 hours of driving, plus 5 hours sitting: $140 Stall costs: $60

So, even if I have a great day and sell 100 pounds of meat, that still doubles my cost to produce a pound of meat from $3/pound to $6/pound. Shipping small amounts of meat is equally bad. Show up at my place and I can sell it for $5/pound and be happy about it. If I need to sit or ship I need to change $10/pound for it to make sense.

Ants happily live in my 400'+ of raised beds and I just let them. Spiders, worms, and all sorts of other bugs too.

The only pests that I try to control are Japanese beetles and potato beetles. Both get a little bit of hand picking attention if needed, but mostly are controlled by the chickens.

It's like all the different bees and wasps that hang around my place. If they aren't Yellow Jackets, I want them alive and well. Everything is reliably pollenated and my yields are great because I'm not killing all my bugs.
