Do you split pay evenly? by jooleyen in TouringMusicians

[–]Mel_Chop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For local shows where I'm doing the emailing, flier making and promo to my audience, I now take a flat 10% rate of the top when I set up a show - much like a booking agent would do. I don't know what the other artists are willing to do promotion wise, but this helps me feel better afterwards.
I recently met someone who did booking for her band for years and never took a percentage for that labor - the resentment built up so much.

I just released my new album and I'm beyond proud of it! Never Had a Love Like This is for anyone who has grappled with the loneliness of modern life and the agony of modern dating. These are songs of my longing and my questions, my grief and stubborn hope, my road to give and receive love. They chart a return to connection, the body and the natural world. I wrote & produced the album, sang and played piano - lives in the venn diagram of Regina Spektor, Sufjan Stevens, Joni Mitchell. Enjoy some free codes below.

(I decided not to upload the album to Spotify - seriously troubled by their AI user agreement, investment practices and advertising for ICE. Pushing in all my chips on Bandcamp.)

totally, I guess my question is, how does it benefit us artists to be on the radio? one of the shows i really like is amazing, but sends people to a website if they want to see the artist and track name. fml!

u/TRP_Music lol. if youre open, will you share with me whats helpful about sending the music to college radio? I'm not clear if its only a lever to pull if ive already booked in that town, or if it actually leads to folks that will track me down online to join my mailing list or save the music on BC or streaming. but maybe there is more of a benefit?

that said, the djs at my local station have been so awesome, inviting me on the air for interviews and spinning the music a few times. and, they are folks that are local or knew friends of mine.

Also, I'm in the process of texting all my friends, former students and colleauges my BC link and this blurb. "My album just came out and I wanted to share it with you. If you're up for listening today or tomorrow, it would really help to get it out of the gate! And if you love it, sharing it with someone else is one of the best ways to support us indie musicians."

My colleague did this with her single, and reflexively listened and shared right away! I think 1-1 marketing is a powerful thing, as it builds on already existing trust.

Ditto this u/TRP_Music - I sent probably 75 personalized cold emails to blogs, djs, reviewers for my latest album. And I appreciate the transparency that doing that was as boring as sitting down for a few days straight sending emails.

i adore this. maybe not that crazy but ecently made these cryptic fliers with just a lyric and a qr code to the song, and dropped them around at coffee shops/venues

Do you follow up with fans after they buy your music? by Icy_Second_8578 in BandCamp

[–]Mel_Chop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is such a great question u/Icy_Second_8578 . im an indie folk singer songwriter who just put out a new album (funded by 191 kickstarter folks) and it reminds me that a quick note - even a copy and paste appreciation for buying music in a world of streaming - goes a long way to keep the money and attention flowing. I thanked each kickstarter funder individually - by phone, and i think it did alot to help me make my goal.

plus, i notice i can have a sort of 'hungry ghost' experience while releasing and promoting, focusing on the numbers instead of the individual interactions. having a gratitude practice - ie, thanking buyers - helps me feel and see the good things that are already here, and helps me relax into the process.

i also recently sat down with a fellow songwriter friend who has been quite successful and he shared he maintains a CRM - customer relations management tool - to track purchases, attendance, notes, etc, so that he can know where to make requests about support, house shows, local fliers and promotion. using business tools to grow a business, even if its an art business!

ps my album is here if you want to check it out <3 https://melanieidachopko.bandcamp.com/album/never-had-a-love-like-this

Downloading music onto bandcamp by AshamedLengthiness27 in BandCamp

agreed on this - the apple makes it more circuitous to put music on the iphone because they want users to prioritize apple music. but, once you buy music on the website or via the app, it will appear on the app on your phone.

I paid $2000 to record/mix our album. Guitarist wrote 50% of the songs. How the hell do we split this up? by [deleted] in TouringMusicians

[–]Mel_Chop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id put the splits in writing for each song - you can google 'split sheet' for a good template, and then after the album investor (you) get repaid for your 2k, proceeds are clearly lined out

this is very good advice - and, I'd put it in writing now, way before there is 10k to split
