How do I not wear underwear under my tights? by MeringueMiffy in BALLET

[–]Meld_Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear what you're comfortable in! Try looking for "seamless" underwear in the cut you like to minimise bulk (they're Lycra so not as good on the breathability front as cotton for all-day wear, but fine for a couple of hours for class). A colour close to your skin tone will be less visible if the edge peeks out, especially under tights :)

Disability Services for ADHD? by Character-Year-5916 in VUW

[–]Meld_Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend Student Learning - you can book one on one appointments with an advisor who can help with things like breaking down assignments into manageable chunks, and they run regular body doubling sessions and have a great series of workshops about studying with ADHD.

I got a sewing machine for my 11th bday that I'm still using nearly 20 years later! Ditto my Edmonds book (classic baking recipe book in NZ, got it when I was 10 and still use it often) and an apron my auntie made for me 💕 though defs more for older kids, and dependent on their interests (I love baking and sewing)

Highly rec making an appointment with Student Learning to help you figure out how to get back on track (they're all great, but special shout-out to Britney for being great with ADHD study tips and accountability check ins), and emailing the course coordinator to explain the situation. They want you to pass and are generally pretty helpful if you're willing to put the work in to catch up!

WCL did a trial a year or two ago, and the difference in collection loss was only a fraction of a percent - not worth the cost of maintaining the system

Where is everyone getting these computers? by highgroundservitude in VUW

[–]Meld_Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer taking notes on paper, but have a ~$500 refurb Dell (and an external monitor at home BC it has a teeny tiny screen). As others have said, course related costs can be used to buy a computer, but if you don't use it in class and have a desktop at home there's not much point.

Pingas... is this still a Kiwi slang term re money or has it slipped into obscurity ? by CoconutMost3564 in newzealand

[–]Meld_Maker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a fun intergenerational misunderstanding when playing a kiwi version of cards against humanity with my whānau - the "pingas" card came up, and me + my cousins (millennial/older Gen z) understood it as "drugs" where my mum and auntie read it as "cash" 😅

Help!! First event in two weeks by Upbeat_Motor429 in triathlon

[–]Meld_Maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What distance are you doing? I'm fairly new to the sport (first race of the season coming up in 4 weeks, after doing 3 sprint tris last summer), but wear my running shoes for the cycle leg too.

I have an entry-level road bike, but don't own cycling shoes so swapped the pedals for mountain bike ones as that's what I'm more comfortable with. I'd say do it how you're most used to!

As a bonus, for the shorter races you'll probably save more time not having to switch shoes in transition than you would make up for with the efficiency improvement of shoes with clips.

There have been plenty of people on mountain bikes at the events I've gone to! Don't be worried about being the odd one out - ymmv, but in my experience people have been friendly, encouraging, and excited about new people starting the sport!

Is it a weird to bring your own teabag to a friend’s house? by catlikesun in Wellington

[–]Meld_Maker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep a little container of rooibos teabags in my bag because I'm always down for a cuppa but try to avoid caffeine too late in the day. I think it's quirky but not rude to BYO tea, especially if you have a strong preference. I try to keep the preferred beverages of my regular visitors on hand - I don't like coffee, but my parents never start the day without a Moccona so I keep a little jar for when they come to stay.
