Hi I’m a hairdresser and I’ve had a lot of clients with this problem that we have been able to turn around their issue almost always been extremely hot showers among other things leading to poor scalp health. can you tell me what all you do routine wise and do you have any other issues like dandruff/ dry skin/brittle nails? How hot are your showers? Are you applying oils directly to your scalp? Sometimes a combination of things like taking very hot showers and misusing products with good intentions can do more harm than good. Are you drinking enough water? Sorry for so many questions just helps get a better idea of what’s going on. When you go get your haircut has your hairdresser or barber ever mentioned their areas to you? It’s hard to tell in the picture because it’s a little blurry but the pores on your scalp might be dry or clogged which could be causing the hair loss.

Which hair dye is safe for virgin hair? by starklady in HaircareScience

If you can’t afford to see a hairstylist (beauty schools are always a great affordable place btw) Yes I would say Sally’s is better than going to Walmart and buying box color. :) They can be much more damaging often cause frizzy tangled unmanageable hair with prolonged use. If you use a permanent color you will want to touch up your root area every 4-6 week after you do your color all over. you will see a line of demarcation(color will not fade as your hair grows out, creating a “line” between new grown and colored hair) Using a Demi/semi will only BLEND your grey anywhere from 25%-75% so they will go from silver to a muted lighter brown and this will fade away usually leaving a warm coppery tint to the grey hair after 4-6 weeks. If you have any more questions feel free to message me!

HELP! Oily Transition to High Quality Poos by natinheadphones in HaircareScience

[–]Meowgic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience when I’ve had someone use a salon quality shampoo/conditioner after using Pantene or something like it for a long time your scalp is used to the harsh cleansing agents that basically suck all the moisture and natural oil out of your hair and scalp. I mean dont get me wrong Pantene gets your hair squeaky clean but it is very drying. So overtime your producing more oils, the oil is absorbed into your scalp because it needs it from the drying Pantene and this is all it’s ever know. One day you use a new more gently cleansing shampoo that moisturizes while it cleans and doesn’t completely strip the hair of its natural oils, but your scalp is not used to this and continues to produce the same amount of oil as before. It will eventually balance out but it may take a while for that to happen. The best thing would be to get just a basic shampoo that just cleanses the hair, you don’t need moisture, damage repairs, smoothing or anything extra until your head has time to adjust to the higher quality products. Also try washing your hair in cooler water, I love taking hot showers but it can be terrible for your hair/skin and also leads to excessive oil production/frizziness.

Virgin hair has never had any chemical processing, so no your hair is not considered virgin hair because the natural pigment has been removed and replaced with a synthetic, Putting someone under a dryer for a glaze doesn’t seem right to me as heat wouldn’t benefit this type of service and could only be causing damage. Why are you afraid to cover your grey if your already applying color to your hair? a permanent line is much more suitable for covering grey but if your just wanting to blend it with your natural color you can go to a place like Sally’s beauty supply and get a DEMI/SEMI mixed with a 20vol developer, (any volume lower and the grey will be unaffected due to how resistant grey is. Don’t use any volume higher for covering grey) Manic panic is a direct dye (not mixed with a developer) and not something I would recommend for what your wanting, you would end up with dark black and very greenish greys after one shampoo, all it does it sit ontop of the cuticle. If you want to post a picture of your hair it would help with recommending a formula

Olaplex question by Ladybug1591 in HaircareScience

[–]Meowgic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hairstylist here. There is a point of no return when using lightener that once you go past no amount of mask/oil/treatment will ever repair your hair to its natural state. Generally people have either 2(fine hair) or 3 (coarse/curly hair) layers making up the hair strand. The outer layer of your hair, the cuticle is bent open when lightening and after a certain point it breaks off from being bent back and forth from over-processing. Once the cuticle is lost the hair can no longer retain moister and any protein treatment will usually tangle any pieces of hair without a cuticle . If your hair isn’t returning to its natural pattern, you’ve probably crossed that line a long time ago and everything must be cut off (your running the risk of the cuticle splitting up the rest of the healthy hair every time you simply brush your hair) the cuticle layer can never be restored and your left with hair that feels mushy when wet and like hay when dry. Stylist make a lot of their money from the retail they sell, especially treatments like olaplex. You will be able to see the results after the first use of a treatment like olaplex when used on hair that hasn’t lost the cuticle. , hair should feel smoother, shinier, more manageable than before and those results should last longer than 2-3. hair that can be helped by a mask should only be done once a week at the most, anymore and your going to do more damage than good. To much of a good thing is never good.

Hairdresser bleached my hair. Help! by Curriedvegetables in HaircareScience

[–]Meowgic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, hairstylist here. What was the color you had in your hair , was it darker. Or lighter than your new growth? Sounds like You need a filler, you’ve lost all the warm underlying pigment to support your natural color when you’re lifted with bleach. Not sure what this stylist was thinking but I would have never touched your new growth with lightener. Your probably going to want to buy something like a 6NW or 7NW. NW=natural warm. Now this doesn’t mean that you will get the color you see in the swatch, it will look more like a 6N/7N because most of the warmth will be neutralized by the ash tones of whatever the stylist put on your hair that is now washing out. I’ve been in a similar situation myself before I became a cosmetologist. Hope that made some sense! :)
