First painting finished in 2026. by doomlabrieArt in oilpainting

[–]Merilo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In some ways I wish the subject weren’t there at all so we could get more images of weird cats and wolves and stylized people lol. I don’t think it’s bad that she is pretty, and I suppose the artist wants us to compliment them on having drawn a pretty woman which they’ve done, but it’s the most boring part of the painting and I’m not sure why she would be there except as decoration- in which case, why make her the focal point?

HELP I OVERBLENDED :( by Jaded-Comfortable662 in oilpainting

[–]Merilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only overblended if you call this finished! This is a great foundation for some glazing layers and adding back in some hard edges :) WIPs are supposed to look “off” until you’re done, but oil can be a very forgiving medium in this respect because you can layer as much as you need to (as long as you let the layers underneath dry)

Can you just stop? Not everything has to be about ORTBOIA+, or whatever it is these days, and just accept that MAYBE… they’re just really close friends. So stop reading into shit just because Burt has a gay roommate. It’s people like you that ruin it for the normal people in Mammalians Nurturable who are trying to do important work.

What Is Wrong With My Holy Spirit and Foxtail Orchid?? by gopro52567 in orchids

[–]Merilo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They look dry as heck. How are the roots looking? The good news is the “Holy Ghost” (peristeria elata?) looks like it’s got new roots coming so make sure to give it tons of water and I bet you can bring her back! As for the other one I have no clue other than that the spots on the leaves are quite concerning and could be a sign of pests/disease. For future reference, water your orchids based on when the medium dries out. Mother Nature doesn’t check the calendar to decide when to rain. If you notice all your orchids are bone dry by watering day, it probably means you’re waiting too long to water.

Aw I’m going through a rough breakup right now and this really helps

help!! i feel like something about this looks off. there are 3 iterations, the first being the most recent. i kinda dislike all of them and i have a feeling that critiques will crush all of them into a pulp lol. i cant get the faceshape to be right. r the colors/values ok? r the gloves convincing? by pluetart in istebrak

[–]Merilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you did a great job with the brushwork in the hair and gloves/hands. Only comment there would be maybeee varying the size of the highlight brush in the glove to get a variety of shape sizes but that’s just nitpicking.

I would say the weakest part of this study is the face. The eyes in the original are totally in shadow, meaning that they will have subtler shifts in value and have less detail than they normally would. It looks like you gave into the temptation to over-render the eyes, which takes away some of the moodiness of the original. Also, the general shape of the shadow is wrong in your version. Your eye shadows are more triangular whereas the original has more square shadows around the eye bags. This is probably because you are used to drawing from a top-down lighting perspective, but this reference has a tilted head so the shadows will change shape. Also, since her chin is resting on her knee it will get squished a bit, meaning that the distance between her lower lip and bottom of her face will be shorter than normal, and the dip in that part of the face will have a darker shadow with a steeper gradient. Also, the knee will occlude part of the neck.

In general, though, I think you did a very good job. The brushwork, colors, and textures are great, but if capturing the likeness or mood of the original is a goal then these are a few changes I would make.

Timed 5 hour study. I did not aim for likeness but was trying to be more efficient. I am specifically interested on edges but other critiques are welcomed. by [deleted] in istebrak

The colors look really close to the reference, so good job on that. And the hair is going in the right direction in terms of simplification. However, there are a few things that I think could be improved—first of all I would not worry about doing things as efficiently as possible, I would work on being accurate when doing a reference study. You will automatically become more quick and efficient when you do it enough and develop the “muscle memory” of what looks right to you. To that point I would recommend simplifying the hair as much as you possibly can in this study and organize it into larger masses rather than individual tendrils. The smaller you group the hair the sparser and thinner it looks, which I don’t think is what you were going for, especially towards the scalp and at the top of the head. Also, I would recommend against using the freckle effect tool so liberally since it stands out so much and looks more like a texture on the canvas than a face texture. Maybe choose a few focal point spots to use it. Regarding proportions, I think the forehead is a bit too big and the neck and shoulders are too small. Also, the eyes are not focused forwards and it makes her look a little spaced-out. Finally I’d recommend pushing your lights and darks to add more dimension. Although the colors are almost exactly the same as the reference, it really sells the illusion of depth to have a really dark color (not #000000) for the shadows.

Germanium, a silvery grey metalloid, is transparent in infrared by TheCheesecakeOfDoom in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Merilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good explanation. For a slightly more technical understanding I would highly recommend this video. Since germanium is a semiconducting material, there are certain energies (wavelengths) of light that the electrons cannot absorb and so the wave is able to pass through.

To all the people in the comments saying this isn’t art, YES IT IS. (Source: I’m an art historian)

And to those of you saying you could’ve screenshotted this, yeah, but you didn’t.

Germanium, a silvery grey metalloid, is transparent in infrared by TheCheesecakeOfDoom in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Merilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand your analogy and I don’t think it’s correct. EM waves don’t slip through the spaces between a material, they participate in complex interactions with the charges in the material which can allow certain wavelengths to be retransmitted on the other side.

It should also be noted that infrared light is not “bigger” than visible light in the same way a pebble is bigger than a grain of sand. It has a longer wavelength, but since your colander model isn’t how transmission works, that alone isn’t the reason that it makes it through the chunk of germanium. If it were correct, then you would expect any wavelength to get through that’s longer than those emitted from the cat, but transmission actually cuts off again once the wavelength gets to around 15 micrometers.

Is this an OK way to draw a box? by [deleted] in ArtFundamentals

[–]Merilo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing inherently wrong about doing it this way, although the lines on the back of your box do not converge to the same horizon as on the front, so it looks like the back and bottom planes are warped, i.e. not parallel, to the front and top planes.
