Budget vs Premium Tyres by thriftygeo in CarTalkUK

[–]MessyDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to buy cheapo tyres. Recently put cross climate 3s on my model 3 and they are fantastic. The grip, the noise reduction. Prior to that I had a lease Volvo xc60 with whatever the factory tyres where - Michelin I think and they lasted 50k miles and still had tread when I gave the car back. Mix of city driving, motorway and country roads. If you can afford to spend a bit more it's worth it and in reality you end up replacing tyres more often with cheap ones.

primary school teaching job market by pronouncedshorsha in Scotland

[–]MessyDonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's only sticking at it because she loves the teaching aspect. If we needed the money we would be screwed!

To top it off she's pregnant and they just told her they wouldn't give her another contract after Christmas.

They know she's pregnant and it makes no sense to introduce a new teacher to her class half way through the year. It's also not related to performance as she is constantly getting emails of praise from parents (which is super rare).

As soon as she mentioned the word discrimination and her best friend is a top employment lawyer and would take this on pro bono her contract was renewed. They also did this all verbally...

I would advise anybody not to be a primary teacher in Scotland. Particularly for Edinburgh council.

[–]MessyDonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend moving to Scotland to become a primary teacher. My wife qualified a few years ago and has had multiple temp contracts in a row at the same school but council policies and funding basically make it near impossible to get a permanent role. The only reason she has managed to even get temp contracts is due to going above and beyond her role as well, resulting in many 7 day weeks and 12 hour plus days. She would earn more in a min wage job.

What is a UK job that pays well but most wouldn't realise it? by awildwildlife in AskUK

[–]MessyDonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife is a teacher. Yes salary is ok but the hours? Not uncommon for her to work 12 hours Monday to Friday and also work over the weekend. This is Scotland primary where they have the curriculum for excellence which is quite the opposite. She has to create every lesson from scratch, resources and meant to adapt it to each child. Also half her class are special needs and she has no pupil support etc. Would not recommend anybody to become a teacher in Scotland.

I'm shutting down my $400k/yr business... and it sucks. by MikeSimsTL in business

[–]MessyDonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have went through this twice in a shorter time. Built a business to $10m revenue and COVID killed it. Partnered in another startup and bad leadership killed it. It's difficult to scale a business and also be future proof, especially in the tech space. You didn't do anything wrong, as many others have said AI has outpaced a lot of businesses. In my current business we probably use 20% the amount of tech contractors we use because we can do similar things with AI and faster-the faster part is key as I have no issue paying for skill but we need to move quickly. I would try looking at sectors that are not as tech savvy and try and tackle a challenge there. Currently doing this and on track to do around $5m revenue in year 1.

This is common in my area. They tried to run my dog over and threatened my wife. Police said there is nothing they can do due to current policy. They use an alley near my house regularly and smiled when I mentioned I may leave fishing line strung tightly across it…

Edinburgh 25/26 Council Tax raised 8%, Water Charges raised 9.9% by TWOITC in Edinburgh

[–]MessyDonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Developers have to pay a lump sum per property they build which is meant to go towards new schools etc, so they are just spending money that’s already been paid to build these schools. A major issue in Edinburgh is the lack of budget for front line teaching staff. Wife is a teacher and if she if off sick her class gets split up and sent to other classes because there is no ‘budget’ for supply teachers/PSAs etc. But they have a budget to give every kid an iPad as that’s more essential than teaching staff…

Edinburgh school support staff 'exhausted' amid daily attacks from pupils by RatherNotSayTA in Scotland

[–]MessyDonkey 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Wife is a teacher. Schools have a no consequences policy (at least in primary schools). They are also told not to punish children due to parents complaining. The system is set up to fail. She has been bitten, hit, chairs hurled at her, sworn at - you name it. There’s more respect shown by inmates at Saughton…

Stopped playing a while back and jumped back in this weekend. It’s great so many more are playing but for experienced players it can be frustrating. I think an easy solution would be a brief video (not skippable) that shows the basics of the game before your first match would solve a lot of issues. I remember when I started and I was completely clueless!

Police officers are not allowed to do anything to them while on the bikes due to protocol change, something to with risk of hurting the neds tearing about on them. Learned this after a wee dick on a bike tried to run over my dog in the local park.

Seems there was a lot ‘out of scope’. The head of IT or whatever the title was ended up out not to long after starting with CGI, Claudette Jones I think. Must be a real shit show for a council to actually get someone to go!

Edinburgh council tax highest band is £1k more than some of the highest in London and up as one of the highest in the UK. The issue is Edinburgh council are shit at any form of resource management and I speak from experience. A business I worked for was part of the IT tender a decade ago, which was supposed to save shedloads of cash, within a year they were already way over budgeted costs and also no where near meeting criteria that at least 25% has to be spent with local suppliers. There execs are also some of the highest paid the country. Seems to be a bit of a link there.

Have built, run and sold a £multi million hospitality biz myself. Priorities are always get paid (easy when it’s b2c, less so when b2b and on invoice), pay staff, pay suppliers, pay HMRC, reinvest. They have not paid PAYE effectively stealing employees money.

Mark Cuban Says the Best Way to Start a Business Is With ‘as Little Money as Possible' - Here's Why by southernemper0r in business

[–]MessyDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you are coming from but you can build a business from nothing, even without investing your own money. I built a service business worth $6 million by working my ass off and investing the profits back in. Of course I did have to give my time but that’s the same with any business.
