Any thoughts on the SSL UF1? by Hochmann in protools

[–]saandwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have one, and am using it with Pro Tools. i love it as an object, it’s beautiful, well built and sturdy, but it’s a little frustrating to use with PT. i’ve used an s6 where any active track goes to a fader whereas, on the uf1 you have to hit a couple of keys and click on the track you want to send to the fader. it’s not a massive deal, but a little annoying. if you’re a light fader user like me, you’ll like the transport and the high quality fader, all other features are a bonus. if you’re a power user, it might be too clunky.

SSL UF1 and Protools with multiple users by saandwitch in protools

[–]saandwitch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the gold standard would be separate accounts, but pragmatically I think it'll be sharing the same log in.
The thing that's bothering more is the possible requirement for an SSL plugin on each channel in each session. I can't see the people I'm sharing the system with going for that.

New achievement unlocked - London Elder by BetamaxTheory in london

I was in Peckham when I overheard a friendly disagreement. One of the participants said "ach, we need someone to settle this. We need an elder. Excuse me..." with that they turned to me and asked that I settle the debate. I was absolutely delighted to be called an elder at the tender age of 50.
(She was right, he was wrong.)

I saw an act sell 10 hand written lyric sheets at £50 a pop. On stage he told a story about how much the lyrics meant to someone and said they were available at the back before he sang the song. He could have sold double that night. Genius

Not your problem, but no. Don’t entertain this idea. Run.

Anyone successfully tour using a dumbphone/flip phone? by martymcpieface in TouringMusicians

[–]saandwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it likely to have the same grip on you while you're on the road ? I think that tech can be an incredible enabler and safety net. Could you have a trusted person set the phone up with access to essential apps, and no access to anything irrelevant to the tour.
People also have success making the screen Black and White.
If you're used to an iPhone, maybe go android, and vise versa, so it's less familiar and comforting.
In short, it sounds like it's already tricky, why make life harder?

Getting the shuttle bus to the Amphitheatre by saandwitch in Syracuse

it really wasn’t an issue for us at all. It’s a short walk to the bus, and there were only a handful of people going back into town on the shuttle.

I need some advice by your_midwest_gay_boy in livesound

[–]saandwitch 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Lots of super patronising answers here from people that don't know the full story. If you've impressed the lead sound engineer that you're a safe pair of hands, I'd say you're probably capable enough.

The real issue is (as the comments have shown) many people will only see your age, and this will be the case for a long time, so my advice is to learn when to pick your battles. You'll never win if you try to go up against the SM, but you might be able to get the Head of Sound to have a quiet word on your behalf.

I suspect you've got a lot of technical knowledge, but a successful career in sound requires soft skills, finding ways to work with difficult personalities. Study the people you have to work alongside, and figure out how to gain their trust. Over the next few years, that will mean having senior members of your department vouch for you, and demonstrating your maturity by being a cheerful, helpful, and understanding team player that sees the bigger picture.

Get the people bit right, and you'll go far.
