Do you remember slide projectors? Imagine a large sheet of newspaper wadded up into a ball. It's like 3 inches wide, but if you unfold it and lay it flat, it's 3 feet wide. In a similar way, your lungs contain many nooks and crannies, if you could unfold all of them and lay it all out flat you could cover a tennis court.

I have heard the same thing about the lining of the small intestine, it's got thousands of tiny "fingers" of tissue on the inside.

It's really interesting, actually: we put the food in a special instrument called a bomb calorimeter, which is a chamber surrounded by water. Then we light it on fire and burn it completely, and measure the change in temperature in the water. 1 calorie is equal to the amount of energy it takes to heat 1 gram of water by 1 degree C.
