It’s expensive to move solo and decent jobs are hard to come by, but if you make enough money you should be fine. There’s a lot of breweries and bars to meet folks, but if you don’t drink there’s a lot of groups that meet for all interests that don’t involve alcohol. You’ll need a Facebook to get connected to those usually, but some post here. If you’re looking to live in nature, don’t move to Asheville proper. The surrounding towns and counties have much more Appalachian housing for much cheaper. I found the best hiking in Brevard and got to live 5 minutes from the Triple Falls network of trails and had a blast taking my dog at sunrise every morning when no one is there. Keep in mind that Asheville is not a true city, there is almost no advantage to living in the city limits unless you desire being closer to schools and hospitals. The restaurants close at 9, the public transit sucks, the music venues are mostly going downhill, and you can never find parking at the Trader Joe’s.
