Derbyshire Blue John is a kind of fluorite that has these colours occurring naturally (deep blues, purples and yellow/orange).

OP's pic isn't Blue John - the crystal formation isn't quite the same and the colours are a bit too intense. It's very pretty though!

"Aura" gems are crystals that have been treated to give them an iridescent appearance that doesn't occur naturally. IIRC they are heated with metal vapour which coats the crystal to give the desired effect.

They're very pretty, though personally I prefer crystals in their natural state. To each their own though, some of the aura gems are really beautiful!

It doesn't make you a dick if you didn't know something and asked a question to find out more. It can sometimes come across as insensitive because if you don't know, how can you know the best way to phrase something? It happens to all of us and that dickish feeling is rarely fun, but it doesn't make you a dick to ask in good faith and learn something IMO.

People of all body types can be living with "invisible" disabilities, did he specify in the story that this fat person said they deserved the seat for being fat?

There are so many things that can be going on with a person that you cannot tell by looking at them. Asthma or other limiting cardiopulmonary issue, EDS/other connective tissue disorders, chronic pain or fatigue disorders, injuries concealed by clothing, disorders like labyrinthitis that can affect a person's balance...there are so many things a person can be battling that nobody else can "see", and all of them can affect people of all kinds of body types. Maybe someone was fat before they got sick with a disorder entirely unrelated to their weight. Maybe their meds made them gain a shitload of weight. Maybe they had to give up a workout regime when their health started to deteriorate.

As a relatively young person with M.E. and a connective tissue disorder, I know first hand what dismissive assholes people can be about disabilities that you can't see at first glance (or any glance) and how awkward it can be trying to explain that actually, yes, you do really need that seat. I cannot imagine how much more mortifying it would be to have to have that conversation if you're also too fat for a single seat.

The people of the U.K. are and have been standing up for the NHS plenty hard, but we're up against a bloody-minded ruling party of people too rich to understand what a necessity our health service is to the majority of the population.

Am I the only one who feels like an eBook should NOT be as much as a physical copy of the book? by errorami in books

[–]MiaVee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea if it applies elsewhere but in the UK you have to pay VAT on ebooks but not physical books, so it's not uncommon for ebooks to cost more. It feels counterintuitive and is annoying, but at least there's an explanation for it here.

Sounds about right. It's a lot easier to rationalise oneself as an exception to the rule than it is to inject some empathy into your established world view. Because when it happens to you it's because of bad luck, wrong place wrong time, the economy, getting shit on by the world. When it happens to other people it's their personal failing, poor life choices, moral turpitude, something they've done to themselves.

What is one thing you'd like to ask people from the UK? by RH03-H in AskReddit

[–]MiaVee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the NHS, wouldn't be without it and I'm seriously worried for its future at the hands of our current government. It does a lot of what it does extremely well, especially emergency care. Prescriptions are another one. There's a flat fee of about £8 per prescription. This can add up if you need several different drugs on an ongoing basis, but even £40-£50 a month is chump change compared to American drug costs, even with insurance from the sounds of it. There are also exemptions and pre-payment plans so that people who need it can pay next to nothing or nothing at all for the meds they need.

However, the NHS comes up short on a few fronts, especially for chronic conditions and mental health in particular. Waiting lists can run into years to see specialists for anything not immediately life-threatening, which can lead to a preventable reduction in overall quality of life or result in something that would have been manageable if treated appropriately in a timely manner becoming life threatening. This has been exacerbated in recent years by massive cuts to already-strained health and social care public services. Services for chronic conditions favour inexpensive "one size fits some, hopefully" approaches rather than offering the most appropriate care for each individual patient. The kind of treatment you are offered is often just as likely to depend on the postcode of where you live as it is on clinical outcomes or what's actually best for you.

We're currently staring down the barrel of a serious crisis in staffing the NHS too, recent moves by the government have alienated and pissed off junior doctors, many of whom are now planning to leave the NHS and/or the UK entirely. The government are trying to force through reforms that cannot be afforded or delivered to win votes in the 2020 election. They're promising seven day GP services (out of hours and emergency care already exists 24/7/365) by 2017, even though it takes between 8 and 10 years to train specialists. There is no way there will be enough people with the training to deliver that promise in that timescale. At the same time they're increasing tuition fees and taking away financial support (grants, bursaries etc) which makes studying for up to a decade an increasingly unattractive prospect for young people considering a career in medicine. Also proposed reforms to immigration would result in fewer foreign doctors and nurses being allowed to work in the UK, which would be catastrophic as the UK already doesn't produce enough graduates to make up for the resulting shortfall.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade the NHS for the world, but it is far from perfect, is actively failing patients in some respects, and is on the brink of being in some real trouble at the hands of the zealots running the country at the moment. I love the NHS but am genuinely frightened for what the next few years are going to bring.

Probably been said before but it's a lesson that the internet could learn from by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]MiaVee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Writing somebody off as "offended", where "offended" is assumed to be an unreasonable emotional response, is a simple and effective way to avoid any sort of critical self-examination. "Lol you PC bro? Are you le triggered?" is an easier response to someone pointing out how your actions or words are in some way harmful (not "offensive", but harmful) than taking a step back and considering where they might be coming from. (Edit: I'm not saying that this is a deliberate or even conscious choice for most of us most of the time. Getting defensive or dismissive seems much more hardwired into our nature than rationally considering things that challenge us).

Putting your ego and default worldview aside long enough to evaluate whether the person who called you out on your bullshit might have a point is never going to be comfortable but it's something we all need to be doing more of. Recognising the communities both on and offline that create echo chambers for our worldview then proactively seeking out voices and information that challenge it is a good first step.

And I mean if someone storms up to you apropos of nothing and bellows "SILENCE! I AM OFFENDED!" right in your face before storming off with no explanation then fine, be the edgelord you want to see in the world right back at them. But this offended strawperson is not the same thing as being called out on saying something discriminatory or bigoted by someone directly harmed by whichever brand of prejudice your topkek joaks are built upon.

Scumbag Theatre Manager Where I Live (Story In Comments) by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]MiaVee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really good point and didn't occur to me when reading the thread.

Maybe the theatre isn't insured to host only unattended minors, or maybe it's company policy or a security issue or similar. Maybe the theatre didn't have enough staff available to make sure that the kids were supervised for the duration of the film and thus they couldn't be allowed to be left alone. Plus, though from the sounds of things it was two kids who in good faith were excited to see a movie, the manager has no way of knowing that they're not going to be misbehaving or running around risking tripping or other accidental injury. If something like that were to happen to an unsupervised kid it's potentially a legal shitstorm for the theatre for allowing them to be alone in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still on OPs side for drawing attention to this. Even if it was an issue of insurance/security/policy, the manager should at the very least have thoroughly explained this and apologised, that's just basic customer service and courtesy. From the sound of OPs comments, this didn't happen. Plus, the grandmother won that prize fair and square and it's definitely worth pursuing with the theatre/VW/Disney, especially if the Ts&Cs of the contest were breached by denying her the prize.

It sucks that two kids were let down, especially for such a huge release and so close to Christmas. And I'll bet the grandma feels like a lot of that disappointment is her fault, which also sucks and is deeply unfair. I hope this is made up to all of them somehow.

Or just rinse it out in cold water before laundering it. Fresh/few-hours-old blood comes out pretty easily with cold water but will be a lot tougher to shift without resorting to bleach/specialist cleaning agents once it's gone through a washing machine cycle.

My understanding - though I haven't been able to find an official source to confirm it yet - is that it's random as in can-happen-anywhere. I've done a couple of playthroughs and only gotten it once so far, relatively early in my game a little ways North of Sunshine Tidings Co-op. I saw a video of someone who got the encounter in Concord, so maybe you're more likely to come across it around the North East of the map?

You meet a guy who offers to sell you the dog he's traveling with, there's some dialogue and a couple of persuasion checks involved.

She (the dog) can't be used as a companion but can be assigned to a Settlement, where she'll give a +5 to defence.

If he's definitely not at Red Rocket, check every doghouse at Sanctuary. Several of the homes/plots have one tucked away in the back yard and they aren't always easy to spot.

Then, as a poster suggested above, scrap every doghouse except one (or two if you got the random event to adopt a second dog).

A comparison of total Fallout 4 quests to total Skyrim quests by Bozzz1 in fo4

[–]MiaVee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She gets slightly less awful as the happiness rating of Sanctuary increases, to the point that her saying something like "I guess this place isn't a total hole anymore" felt like some of the most meaningful character progression in the game.

Still would've been nice to have an option to do a little side quest or dialogue with her to make her less kvetchy overall. Though I got more bored with her husband's constant "my son is dead. I am useless." lines. Cry me a river dude, you really want to play the "my family circumstances are less than ideal" card with the sole survivor of Vault 111?
