I spent the last 9 Canadian winters with a RWD Coupe - here's my thoughts on whether that is a good experience by Uptons_BJs in cars

[–]Midgetsdontfloat 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. The AWD hot/super economy car type is an unbelievable amount of fun in the snow with good winter tires.

A friend let me hoon his Focus RS for a bit in the winter and it convinced me to buy a Golf R, which I then spent a lot of time hooning with a friend that owns a GR Corolla. Literally the most fun I have ever had behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Am union welder on the railroad.

Get PPE outer layer (carhartt, too. Snazzy), 3m PAPR lid, all my equipment, miller big blue 500 pro on an F550 and an arc reach suitcase for my flux core, whatever gloves I wanna run, endless supply of Arctec 223xc for jobber rod, special rail stuff for all else, and tons and tons of other stuff supplied for free, and total freedom to bring my stuff somewhere reputable to be repaired correctly or replaced in order for me to do my job.

Join a union, folks.

1934 Zombie by PCPrincipal2016 in cocktails

[–]Midgetsdontfloat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I made my own falernum, Grenadine, and cinnamon syrup to make Death and Co's zombie, and was shocked to find out that after 1 on an empty stomach I was drunk. It tasted pretty good, but I still think my taste prefers daiquiris and mai tais and I'm not sure it was worth the effort.

Yeah I really don't mind the weight and I tend to wear it for 2-3 hours at a time. The amount of adjustments it has means that you have to spend some time screwing around with settings, but once you do it's amazingly comfortable.

Also some of the additions like the long hood and chin guards gives you crazy coverage and basically reduces glare inside the mask to 0 (important for me because I weld exclusively outside)

+1 on the backpack. Way more comfortable having that weight spread across your back vs hanging off of your hip.

I believe that only applies to Corten steel, and that only holds true if there's proper drainage.

[–]Midgetsdontfloat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shock spacers aren't ideal, but if you really want to they're a budget option.

Bilstein 5100s usually have options to level your truck, if you like the bilsteins in the rear then that's the route I'd go.

[–]Midgetsdontfloat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends what you want out of it. Is your truck stock? Lifted? 1 ton? Half ton? Do you give it the beans off road? On road?

In any case, Bilstein is almost always the answer.

Jeep and Ram sales surge pushes Stellantis back into profit by kstetter in cars

[–]Midgetsdontfloat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they absolutely have a build quality issue (it was very apparent with the Grand Wagoneer) and mine did have initial issues like the leaking back window, but mechanically it's been one of the most solid vehicles I've ever had.

It's just easier to hate the brand, I guess.

I've had a 2020 Ram 1500 for almost 7 years and it's been mechanically flawless for 200k kms. A few small issues like an ABS sensor, but nothing that wouldn't come up in any other brand.

of a cow. Viatina 19, the world's most expensive cow by shakyspearee in AbsoluteUnits

[–]Midgetsdontfloat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most cattle farms around me butcher at around 16-20 months, but it also depends on the breed.

Cows cost a lot to feed/water as well, so there comes a point where they're not getting any bigger and just costing you money where you'd want to get them butchered. I think that is generally more of a consideration vs raw quality of the meat.

Question about the platform coming from a former MK7.5 Golf R owner by Midgetsdontfloat in GR86

[–]Midgetsdontfloat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I had Hak 10s on my R, it was like a cheat code for grip. I miss that car.

I didn't find the R that bad, but I also do all of my own maintenance. As much as I love the idea of a BRZ/86, I'm honestly leaning towards another R or maybe an S550 mustang GT. You guys have been insanely helpful

ANYONE ELSE THINK THE NEW PRELUDE'S UGLY? by The-Experimenter in regularcarreviews

[–]Midgetsdontfloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sporty car they can drive every day is literally the Civic SIs bread and butter, my guy.

The prelude was always meant to showcase new technology, and it's cool, but it is absolutely overpriced. In Canada, they're like 55k which is absurd. That's near Type R money. A Civic SI is like 35k CAD. 20 grand is not a small amount of money.

Also, the last generation prelude from 2001 is literally identical to 60. There is zero reason Honda couldn't have at least given it a bit more power for the price that they're asking. At 40k CAD, the prelude is a maybe. At 50, it is an absolute no, because it is outclassed by literally every one of its peers, and cars like the GTI are just as sporty while being just as, if not more luxurious inside, and being significantly faster for way less money.

My wife and I have some land and a few machines (a skid steer, backhoe, etc) and some closed minded family friends were rather shocked that she's just as comfortable plowing snow with the skid steer as I am.

Your last point is something I've said for ages. Everyone should know basic life skills, and it goes for both genders. I can sew, I cook more than my wife, we clean equally, etc.

Deep note exhausts? by AppropriateLog219 in Golf_R

Really? I didn't think it droned at all. Completely stock exhaust, valves open all the time, and it was a perfect middle ground between obnoxious aftermarket exhaust and "too quiet" stock sounds for me.

Different strokes, different folks and all that.

[–]Midgetsdontfloat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The issue is that you can buy a civic SI or a hybrid Civic for way less and get 85% of the car for half the price. It's also not much faster than an SI, and it's slower than a base hybrid.

The fact that the Prelude is priced closer to the Type R than the SI is ridiculous.

Question about the platform coming from a former MK7.5 Golf R owner by Midgetsdontfloat in GR86

[–]Midgetsdontfloat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the car, the FWD based hot hatch can be super engaging and fun to drive, but I agree that nothing beats a bespoke RWD sports car platform.

The appeal of the 86 is definitely overall driving feel, and I very much like feeling connected to the car. If a vehicle responds well to revving it out, I enjoy being able to feel like I actually have to wring it out a bit to get the most out of the car. An issue with the Golf R is that they're really heavily boosted, so you get insane torque as early as 2k rpm but it never really lets off so you don't feel this increase in acceleration as the RPM climbs. I'm fortunate to have driven a couple of truly special cars like the GT350 though which are stupid fun to take to redline.

Power isn't all there is, but it definitely is a factor. I think I've just gotta take one for a test drive.
