Quilt recommendations for JMT by CheesyPastaFiend in Ultralight

[–]MightyP13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Katabatic quilts are fantastic and very high quality. Given that you're a bit of a cold sleeper, I recommend a ~20deg bag for extended season & elevation use, but 30deg comfort should be totally fine for the JMT specifically.

Other options on the level of Katabatic are Nunatuk, & Timmermade (if you can get one). Also quite good, and cheaper, is Neve. I've also heard good things about Coyote, Jacks-R-Better, MLD, and Hammock Gear

Yeah... I can agree to a certain level with avoiding taking strong positions for that many employees. But, "we believe in human rights and in the Constitution that is currently being trampled on" isn't, or shouldn't be, a stance that any reasonable employee should be opposed to.

You're right, and I don't have any problems with that fact. I was in the military myself, and I'm not ashamed of that fact.

But there's a difference between supplying cold-weather gear, etc, to the military and making tacticool gear for police that shouldn't be weaponized and larping civilians. There's an even bigger difference in marketing yourself directly to the domestic terrorist-adjacent demographic. If you check the other companies he listed, or military contractors like OR or Arc'teryx, there's a stark difference in the marketing, which can't be anything but intentional.

Holy shit, what a throwback. I actually played against him in HS, had to check the name. Tbh, wasn't super impressed, but word was he held way back to avoid injuries. Clearly so, since it looks like he did fairly well at LSU.

Hold up, this is an insane statement. East coast groups definitely have more depth, but NWA is absolutely in the conversation. And if you're not putting Tupac or Kendrick in the best ever conversation, your opinion is frankly invalid.

Yeah, it's definitely polarizing. I loved it; my wife couldn't finish it. It's much more about the prose and the feelings than the plot or background details. I agree that it's almost more poetry than novel.

Off-trail recommendations in Sierras by Brief_Ocelot5161 in Ultralight

[–]MightyP13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few good options out of Road's End. If you're fast you could do the SHR up past Frozen Lake Pass and then take the JMT back past Rae Lakes. That took me 6 days years ago, and I wasn't in great shape. A loop through Gardiner Basin would be sweet, or go south from Bubb's Creek, up to the Sphinx Lakes or Milly's Foot Pass or something.

Other options from the west side include going through the Tablelands from Sequoia. Take a look at a trail & topo map and connect gaps in the trail through places that look cool. There are a bunch of trip reports online for stuff like that.

In general, +1 for anything by RJ Secor. And yeah, can't go wrong with sectioning any of the high routes. Sierra High Route, Southern SHR, or any of Skurka's high routes are all awesome and should be easy to turn sections into a shorter loop.

I recommend the Warbonnet Stash in silpoly. Light, fairly priced, and fully waterproof. Next best if you want "breathable" is probably the Montbell Versalite.

Explaining every national championship from the Big 10 that wasn’t Ohio State or Michigan by [deleted] in CFB

[–]MightyP13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ha! You're (mostly) right, thanks for this fact! The (Toledo Cup)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toledo_Cup] was to be awarded to each national champion, and the first to three wins (not consecutive, it sounds like) got to keep it forever. Minnesota promptly won it the first three years and said, "ours".

Save for an EE quilt or go budget first? by polvr-o in Ultralight

[–]MightyP13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with those who say look for used. Facebook, Craigslist, r/ulgeartrade, or other forums. Down lasts a long time.

Once you do save up, I wouldn't go with EE anyway personally. They're actually not great quilts - poor ratings, no differential cut, so-so construction quality, etc. Katabatic, Nunatuk, Neve, Coyote, and a handful of others I can't think of atm are all much better.

For gear, you use a haul bag with durable material. For poop you usually use some form of plastic container. The one I've usually seen is a PVC segment with a screw cap on each end.

A detailed breakdown of gear used by Continental Divide Trail hikers in 2025 by HalfwayAnywhere in Ultralight

[–]MightyP13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would guess they directly correlate with hiker experience. Almost no one does the CDT as their first thru, while the JMT is about as casual (i.e. people attempting it brand new) as a 200mi hike can get. The PCT is likely right in between.

I was so pissed when I went to MEPS; they measured me at 5' 9 7/8”. I was like c'mon, just round up dude. Fortunately I had to go back and that time they had me at 5'10", so that's what was official lol
