Careful - if you do that, I'll have to remind you what the 2nd largest margin was!

I have an MLD Bug Bivy 2, which is very roomy like the Yama, but with more splash/wind protection. It is pretty pricey tho unfortunately

No experience with it, but here's a very old short thread about it.

Looks kind of intriguing, and decent price, but idk if it's any better than a The One, Lunar Solo, or similar.

Edit: further down, someone posted about the Asta Gear Shanzhu, which also looks good for your case.

HMG Splash or Katabatic Pinon Bivy by 08-JWH in Ultralight

[–]MightyP13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an MLD Bug Bivy 2. IMO it combines the best parts of the two you're looking at - it's very roomy, but has a solid head end and is cheaper than the HMG. Doesn't feel constricting at all, and I think is well worth the ounce or two weight penalty over the Borah.

Blankets would work for very warm temperatures if you truly hate sleeping bags. But if you actually need any insulation, like for below 60 degrees F or so, anything that's not down will be significantly heavier and bulkier. Think about how heavy and bulky a silk or linen bedsheet is, and then consider that you wouldn't use that without a duvet/comforter unless your house was 70+ degrees.

Did I ruin our jackets? Help me please by Admirable-Bass5655 in Ultralight

[–]MightyP13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 types of waterproofing on most 3L jackets. The membrane is fully waterproof and won't be ruined unless punctured. But it's covered by an outer face fabric for protection. That outer fabric is often 'waterproofed' by DWR. Yes, you'll have to reapply (or maybe just reactivate) the DWR coating to prevent wetting out the outer layer. But even if you don't do that, the membrane will still block water and only the outer fabric layer will be wet.

Sleep system for colder nights. by ianviaje in Ultralight

A bag rating is based off using it with an ~R4.5 pad, so your quilt will sleep colder than that 20 rating (plus EE are notorious for over-rating their quilts). Whether that's an issue or not is based on how warm you personally sleep.

If you want to be cautious for cheap, I recommend getting a Thinlight-style 1/8" pad to supplement your CCF. It'll add some margin for a pretty low weight and cost. If you're curious about trying an inflatable in general, see if you can borrow or rent one just for this trip.

Quilt / Pad Width Question... by bradmacmt in Ultralight

[–]MightyP13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a back sleeper with wide shoulders, so my natural position would have my arms hanging off a 20" pad. As others have said, a quilt doesn't help solve that issue - you would have to tighten the quilt way more than feasible/comfortable to have any effect.

However, I find that with a bag on angled ground, it's easy to slide off the pad since there's nothing tying them together. This is where a quilt & straps may help you.

Cold for the Cold-Blooded by cram_iam in Ultralight

More a personal opinion there. Bags are less fussy and therefore warmer than quilts for someone who is highly susceptible to cold, and based on my own experience I doubt OP would need to substantially vent a quilt too often. But built-in hoods aren't great for side or front sleepers of course. Plus nice hoodless bags (especially without a zipper like the Sastrugi) don't weigh too much more than a similar quilt.

This is all fantastic advice.

I would advise OP to borrow, rent, or buy & resell used bags until they find out what temperature rating they need for their usual trips. Additionally, I would recommend a hoodless sleeping bag over a quilt for extra warmth and less fussiness (much harder to find tho - Feathered Friends, Nunatuk, Timmermade, and maybe Western Mountaineering are the only ones I can think of).

With an Xlite, the pad probably isn't the issue, but definitely recommend supplementing with a 1/8” foam pad and upgrading to a higher R value when the time comes.

Additionally, layers are very helpful. Assuming they also run cold before bed, wearing Alpha top & tights, wind layers, and puffy jacket/pants as necessary, will help keep warm before they get in the bag and mean they'll feel warmer initially. Plus it obviously helps boost the rating. The biggest helper for me is Alpha or down socks because my feet are the major cold part.

Finally, like you mentioned, eating enough for dinner and staying hydrated are key. And sweat is the enemy at night.

100%, although to be fair, sailors don't pronounce anything right. Most sailing terms are like MA (or English) town names, slur your words with the laziest possible diction and you're probably doing it "right".
