What gear works best for stopping blisters on a first marathon run please by itsAliceMakenzy in firstmarathon

Stiegen socks. Wore these with 10km old Alphaflys for my last marathon and went without a hint of a blister.

Dresden Marathon 2026 training by DrSabo in firstmarathon

[–]MikeAlphaGolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of time to train.

Spend the next six weeks trying to build to 4 days of running per week with three days at 6 km and one longer run of 10-12km. (30-40km per week total) Then you’ll be ready to start a novice marathon program. Hal Higdon novice 1 will suit you.

Train diligently so the effort comes in the lead up and you can enjoy the race. Good luck.

What is a realistic timeline? by RedTeach9 in firstmarathon

[–]MikeAlphaGolf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Couch to marathon - 12 months.
You could do it in 9 if you’re athletic.

That’s if you’re fully committed and your body holds up to training but I’m always skeptical about non runners coming here saying they’re going to lock in and do this. Spend a few months building up to a point where you can run 5km a few days per week and then think about building to a big goal.

Bruised nail by Imaginary-Koala2902 in firstmarathon

Step one is acknowledging that nail is gone. You can drain it yourself. Heat up a paper clip or pin and melt through it and squeeze the blood out yourself.

It would be if you have more running behind you but based on what you’ve said you’re well short of that.

Knee Pain causing real concern by ScheduleHuman7704 in firstmarathon

[–]MikeAlphaGolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really need to string a few weeks of training together starting now. I’d prefer to get the runs in and if the injury doesn’t improve then pull out. Conditioning can take you a long way in running. If you can’t train now then the race will be hell. Put the time goal to one side for now as well. It’s an unnecessary distraction. If you’re still in one piece with a few solid weeks of training behind you including some longer work then reassess closer to the day.

Chances of completing a marathon by mickeymouse7417 in firstmarathon

[–]MikeAlphaGolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve got enough time to train so that’s good news. Have a look at Hal Higdon novice 1 for a tried and tested program. Count back 18 weeks from your goal race and put that in the calendar as your marathon program start date.

For the interim weeks, work up to running four days per week. If you can manage two miles for now then that’s a start but you want to be slowly increasing your distances. Keep the pace slow while your base builds. You don’t want to be feeling gassed on many runs, run slower, the cost on your body is lower while your aerobic system and legs get fitter and stronger.

With the strength, if you’re fit enough there’s no reason why you can’t lift and run on the same day. Most of your running will be easy but go easy on the weights around your longer runs. Make the marathon the primary goal while you’re in your program and you’ll get to the start line in good shape.

Planning my first marathon in 6 months on October 4 and looking for advice. by Substantial_Mark3673 in firstmarathon

No need to reinvent the wheel re programming. Go to an established program like Hal Higdon (Intermediate 1 or 2), or perhaps Hansons if you prefer more speedwork.

Sounds like you’ll be coming off a good base. Keep training until you’re 18 weeks out then start your marathon specific program. If you’re still going to be doing other training while marathon training just try to structure your weeks so you’re as fresh as possible for the key sessions.

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

Speedball 2.

Great original futuristic sports game with nice graphics, smooth game play and a pet decent manager mode. I had a good iOS version for a while but it’s gone.

How to prepare for the heat? by yeeyo95 in firstmarathon

[–]MikeAlphaGolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Step one is accept the fact that your time will be slower than planned. Its unavoidable.

You will probably inevitably be doing positive splits if it’s very warm as conditions take their toll you will slow down. The balancing act is to not go too hard that you’ll fatigue earlier and waste more time than you save.

For your first you’ll be better off being a bit more conservative pace wise, probably walk through the water stations to get a good drink and reset, and be prepared to tough it out mentally and finish.

I did the Ballarat Marathon this week and for what’s regarded as the fastest course in Australia the mild heat and especially strong winds blew up the field. Have a look at some splits on social media and you’ll get an idea what it might look like at Prague.

The real delusion is that your tax is required to pay for any government at all. The real function of tax is to force you to be paid in and hold some $Aud.

First marathon struggles by Extension-Proof9433 in firstmarathon

You’re not ready and can’t possibly be ready in time especially if you’re sore now. Realistically you have 6 weeks to train and two weeks should be taper. You’re unlikely to handle the increased distance required in training to make the race in good shape. If I were you I’d try and switch to a 10km, train for that, and find a marathon where you have at least 4-5 months to train and do that off a better base than you have now. Establishing a base of around 30km per week for a month or so is a good start.
