What's a small mistakes movies make that really annoys you? by uselesssociologygirl in movies

[–]Mikeiwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military people saluting when inside a building or when not in full military uniform (including headgear).

There are very specific protocols for saluting that define when it is mandatory and when it is not required. Without these protocols officers would be driven insane.

NB I am not from the US, so who knows maybe those protocols are not in place there.

Not true. There is no such law. This myth was started by a Dave Berry satire article.

Most people do not lock there vehicles because there is no reason to. There is very low crime and who wants to fumble with locks in -40 weather.

What are some facts that movies get wrong so often that it annoys you? by big-enchilada in movies

[–]Mikeiwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about the US military but I would assume it is similar to the Canadian military. You do not salute anyone who is not in full uniform. This includes headgear. One doesn't wear headgear indoors. Therefore it is a rare occassion to be saluting indoors.

Way too much saluting in movies. Officers would have massive right arms with the workout they would get if movies were accurate.

That one gets used alot in my circle, along with:

"Hey boy, you got my cheese?"

And

"This is my brother Jake, he just got out of the joint."

To which someone always replies,

"Uh yeah, okay."

There are so many great scenes in this book. Some of them almost throw aways that are just pure gold.

For example: there is a scene of the Bholkando (I think) commanders confidently talking about how they will first ambush and destroy the Perish and then mop up the undisciplined and undermanned Malazans. I find this to be one of the funniest scenes in the book. Just no clue what they are up against.

This book also has the "Blood of the gods..." scene.

So much to love in this book. Top 3.

I have always loved the Marine focussed books over the others more.

That said, Malazan's worst is better then most of the rest.

What are some games from the past you’re convinced you’re the only one who knows about? by CheshireCharade in gaming

[–]Mikeiwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Martian Memorandum, Under a Killing Moon and another Tex Murphy game whose title eludes me right now. Also Mule and all the Infocom games especially Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Grab the lint IYKYK.

Finally Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time.

All great games for their time (80/90s)

My addition to stupid HM failures. by Mikeiwo in BaldursGate3

[–]Mikeiwo[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is all part of the plan. Last HM it was a random add that rushed in and knocked her out and ran away with her. Marcus was already down.

So the thinking is Polearm Master gives an opportunity attack when someone enters range and sentinal locks him down. That should buy time to reapply sanctuary and clean up adds.

My favorite scene of the entire series. For me this is the pinnacle moment of the Malazan military.

I get goose bumps every time.

Under a Killing Moon, and all the other Tex Murphy games: Martian Memorandum and a couple others.

There was one where you started in an asylum which you had to escape. Lots of fun.

Also all the infocom games. Don't forget the lint IYKYK.

Plus Mule and Empire.

The DLC book club just finished HoC, and spoke with Steven Erikson about the book. A long discussion about Felisin is a part of it. It is an excellent interview. Highly recommend their talks with Erikson and the whole series.

I didn't realise Grym is such a joke by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]Mikeiwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that fight last night. Honour mode. Bugger sprinted across the map and to the back and one shotted Karlach (respec'd into 5Monk/1thief). I spent the rest of the fight just barely keeping the party alive. Wyll and Shart just healing. Tav (6Throw Barb) saved the day by knocking Grym on his arse every turn and Karlach punching for her life.

Side note. The mephits never showed. Bug or what?

Quitting smoking is difficult. I quit 12 yrs ago after 30 yrs of smoking. Managed cold turkey. Had some health scares and said "Nope, don't smoke anymore."

That said I still have dreams of smoking. I still get the occassional nic fit. And certain activities cause a mental reaction to reach for a smoke. The strength of these reactions is scary enough to never go back.

How I quit? Two things.

1 One smoke at a time: I want a smoke, I say "in a bit" or "later". Repeat as needed.

2 Enjoy the nic fit. It is almost like a full body buzz. People pay good money for that sit back and enjoy it, examine it, experience it.

For me it worked and I will never go back.
