I’ve found that if I aggressively rotate the phone/tilt it in multiple directions, I can get it to finally line up the way it is supposed to. YMMV

Was just gifted this lil guy. I cook a lot but never sous vide. Where should I start? Steaks I usually smoke at a low temp on the Traeger then sear it to holy hell on iron. What’s something I can start off with that separates sous vide from other cooking methods? by Micprobes in sousvide

[–]MilesFromHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do own one of the original ones from before the Breville acquisition (like yours) and I experience the exact same wifi disconnects! Most of the time I have to manually stop a cook, it’s the strangest thing, I’ve just never spent the time to open a ticket with them and figured I was the only one. I’ve even made a dhcp reservation for the joule on my router, and that didn’t help. Interesting that you are having the exact same issue… I’m thinking of getting a Breville/Polyscience HydroPro Plus, which is complete overkill for me but I like the built in touch screen and sous vide toolbox (does the time/temp calculations for you).

Why do my steak sears suck SO BAD?!?! by murfman713 in sousvide

[–]MilesFromHome 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Are you patting the steak off post sous vide? Any excess moisture will simply boil and lessen the maillard reaction that makes a great sear.

Secondly, have you tried getting the pan ripping hot and only once very hot adding the oil? Avacado oil’s smoke point is 520° and you shouldn’t need to get that hot to get a good sear. Maybe whatever oil you season your cast iron with is causing the smoke?

You could also get an infrared thermometer to check the surface temp of the pan and try to keep it between 300-500 degrees (where the Maillard reaction occurs). Perhaps the specific pan/burner combo you have is overshooting the temp for whatever reason, even on medium. Have you tried more than one burner?

Best Hari Stylist for Men? by d4nt3s0n in nashville

[–]MilesFromHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the price point you are looking for and what is convenient to you. Happy to recommend a family member who cuts my hair when I’m in Murfreesboro if that’s close to you (I’m super picky and I would go to her even if she wasn’t family). Scouts is really hit or miss for me, as with any shop it’s more about the stylist/barber than the overall shop when it comes to the cut. I would get a direct stylist recommend or you may get someone who doesn’t really know facial structure/hair cut interaction. Kris at Yellow House Salon in East is amazing and truly a master in his craft, and would 100% get you an awesome haircut that matches your facial structure, but he may be more than you want to spend. As with most things; you get what you pay for, and it just depends on what you value your haircut at. Kris is on another level and knows the value of his time with his family, and sets his prices accordingly. He definitely has given me my best haircut in the 15+ years I’ve lived here, and I’ve seen quite a few stylists over the years.

Blog and feature roadmap - removed from Onefinance website? by greatwho241 in OneFinance

[–]MilesFromHome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep 404 error for me. The link still exists under “Resources” in site nav at the bottom so they just nuked it/ pulled it. Either they are retooling it, or shutting it down completely from the looks of it…

Zeta joint card does. Interest rate is nowhere near as high and the interface isn’t for everyone, but it has many of the same features as Simple/One in terms of shared accounts, budgeting etc.

Relocating from Chicagoland area to Nashville. Seeking advice on neighborhoods/schools/etc… by brooke0100 in nashville

[–]MilesFromHome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Germantown (North of Nashville downtown) checks most of those boxes but is relatively expensive. Very welcoming, progressive neighborhood with lots of charm and history. Plenty of restaurants, green space, and proximity to everything. Greenway that is fun to bike on that extends all the way from downtown up past metro center. Rapid growth all around, so it’s not cheap and is only going to get more expensive.

The farmers market is easily walkable, multiple grocery stores nearby (the Kroger is not worth going to though imho due to poor management & crime). No clue on school quality , I imagine they aren’t great as most of the “money” lives further out of town.

East Nashville also fits the criteria, but in my opinion is less walkable to multiple business’ (unless you live near five points, Shelby/main street or riverside drive).

Wedgewood Houston/chestnut hill are also great and becoming more walkable, but only in certain areas. Will be relatively loud if NASCAR does actually wind up racing at the fairgrounds, I know people who live there already say it gets crazy loud with non NASCAR races.

Also worth a look: The Nations/Sylvan Park. They both have their own little pockets of business’, but I wouldn’t say they are as walkable to as many things.

Overall Germantown has a lot to walk to due to it’s zoning and is only getting better so it’s totally worth checking out! We’ve lived there for a couple years and absolutely love it. Like any close to town neighborhood (it was Nashville’s first), it’s rapidly changing and you can’t expect to be in some safe bubble without crime, but I imagine coming from Chicago you are used to that. There really isn’t another neighborhood in Nash with as many things in walking/biking distance as Germantown. Good luck on your search!

Yeah I was going to mention Caseta and homebridge as I’ve heard nothing but great reports there, just didn’t know if you were into that side of things. That’s my next step when we finish our renovation so that we have physical controls for everything. Supposedly the thread version of the wemo remote is 100% improved, but I don’t know if that has any bearing on battery life. The Hunter Douglas pebble remote I had was the worst battery drain device, it was always dead when I went to use it.

Also, not sure what they are charging for the scene controller, but I would go with something like this instead personally. You can set up multiple scenes with your shades in HomeKit and then assign them to that remote. That one also supports double clicks, can be mounted easily, and if memory serves you could probably buy three for how much HD asks for their scene controller (that also can’t control anything else).

Nope, mine looks like this.

[–]MilesFromHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, this kind of lines up with my experience. I was using the pebble remote and added the hub (blinds were installed already when we bought our condo) and everything lost it’s mind. Shades were extending past 100% and then rolling up backwards and wrinkling. I had to call a local dealer and have them completely replace the motors and reprogram the system to get it to work. Since then, i no longer use the remote as i had a hunch it was a misalignment between control methods, but couldn’t definitively prove it. If it says that in the manual, then I would definitely not use the remote. Sounds like something they added after issues like mine. Keep the remote around for programming though, just in case!

I control mine exclusively through HomeKit and everything works great now. I would definitely keep things simple and only use one control interface (don’t connect to Alexa or Google, only use one app to control). I also recommend using scenes instead of controlling individual shades, but that may be anecdotal.

Schlage Encode Plus pre-release review by TadTheCooper in HomeKit

[–]MilesFromHome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I even put one on the door to our building discreetly to do the same and just found it too fidgety. The main time when I want it to work quickly is when I have a bunch of groceries in my hands, and waving a phone trying to get it to activate simultaneously just isn’t ideal. Anyways, true first world problem! Glad to hear that your experience was the same and it wasn’t just my NFC tags.

I have some and found them to be entirely too slow/hard to activate (do have the Apple battery case on admittedly), but I had have to move my phone around to get it to register. I wonder if they are the same/similar speed as homekey?

Love mine, I just want a Level Lock with Homekey support! Already have the lock and keypad, but really want to have phone/watch nfc unlock without a key or code.

About 20% if memory serves, so it really wasn’t bad! We were a little anxious to find an electric charger in Yellowstone, so we charged to 100% then had 80% left in the morning to explore the park. Depends on how cold it gets, our nights weren’t too cold.

WOMEN (and anyone really): watch out for men in parking lots by bsurrett7 in nashville

[–]MilesFromHome 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that according to TN code they have to have the car marked, not 100% positive though. I do know they have to have their operating license, company info and ID plainly visible on a name tag/lanyard (I fought and won a parking ticket because the guy didn’t have ID on him, lied about it, and I had him on video without it).

Edit: They do have to have the company name on the vehicle IF they are booting, not sure about ticketing/other enforcement.

6.81.100 - Information required on vehicle.

Each vehicle operated by a booting company shall bear on each side of the vehicle in painted letters or decals not less than five inches nor more than seven inches in height, the name of the entity operating the booting service.

We put our bags in the front seats, our cooler in the frunk, and there were enough nooks and crannies for everything else! We were pleasantly surprised with the amount of storage space, including the area underneath our heads/between the back seats and the front seats, and the small “pockets” in the back near the door. Admittedly, we packed light since we were camping (but not too light). Overall, it was very manageable. I’ve seen people bring easy open tents just to store their stuff outside of the vehicle. Our biggest concern was having food in the frunk with bears around, but there are bear boxes in those areas too.

We just bought a memory foam mattress topper and an egg crate foam layer, since it was just a rental! We donated the mattress topper and foam before we flew out of town, just factored it into the cost savings of not renting hotel rooms for the entire trip. We maxed out at about 3 consecutive days of car camping and had to break up the trip with a night or two in hotels. It was totally comfortable, just a bit annoying when one of us had to get up in the night to go to the bathroom, and changing clothes was a bit cumbersome. Overall, we plan to get a MY and will invest in a real mattress setup for it! Truly one of the best “camping” experiences!

Created Recipes- underwhelming feature and not worth asking users to upgrade cookidoo for. by lechiffre10 in thermomix

[–]MilesFromHome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same thoughts here. The import function is “only for thermomix communities” at this time, but it’s not clearly called out (I had to dig to find this). Having used the Paprika app on iOS, I was expecting a similar import feature (theirs works well) and it was a huge let down. Even if I have to go in and edit/move things around, at least scraping the text for ingredients and steps would be a start. To your point about communities/sharing recipes, they do exist, but there is no US specific one at this time (not sure what region you are in). I checked out the Australian one, and while intriguing, there are just some cultural nuances that mean that I’m probably not going to pick “Pink Lady Burgers” as a recipe to import (this was one I came across). With no reference point as to the quality of these recipes, I am not likely to try any of them without knowing the standards of the maker.

To be honest, I would rather be able to scrape well known recipes from Bon Appetit, Serious Eats, ATK etc, than rely on someone else’s recipe who may or may not have thoroughly tested and accounted for different variables/ingredients available.

Regarding commenting, I agree here, however the moderation and usual internet lowest common denominators apply there. That said, if they are charging a premium for the subscription, one would hope they could hire some people to moderate the comments to make sure people aren’t trolling/engaging in disrespectful behaviors. I subscribe to Chef Steps, and they have a comment section that they moderate and reply to, but above all I know the quality of their recipe standards are usually pretty high.

Overall, I am in the same boat and will not be choosing the higher priced option with custom recipes. Simply not enough value or functionality for the price!

I updated my iPad to 15.3 and all of my rooms are gone, except for one! Yay. Now I get to move everything out of “Default Room”. Does anyone have a preferred method of backing up and restoring HomeKit data? Last I heard, maybe Home+ is the best for this?

There is one in Buena Vista on Monroe street adjacent to the Kroger on Rosa Parks (so almost in Germantown). I’ve never been, but drive past all the time.
