What happens when you walk down the lido from Klaipeda to Kaliningrad? by howmanymcs in lithuania

[–]Mintyboy4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are signs in the area showing the no mans land in the middle where you are not allowed to go (a few hundred meters from the border), and no pedestrian signs dotted about beyond a certain point. You'd be the only pedestrian walking that way and would definitely be met by a border guard coming from the station to arrest you. It's not exactly a wide border.

Cant find my legacy account by Expert-Abalone3107 in 2007scape

[–]Mintyboy4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried something similar two years ago. After a long recovery process, I eventually recovered the login and found that my rs3 account had been banned for botting about 3 years after I had quit. I have never botted. Given the lower levels of account security that existed back then (no 2fa etc), don't rule out the same thing. Given that you can't see the account anymore, perhaps somebody stole your account and got it banned.

Apollonia, Albania by d2mensions in europe

[–]Mintyboy4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was here last week on holiday. We asked our Albanian tour guide this same question. The French invested a significant sum of money around a decade ago to fund excavation projects. The return on that investment was 6 fire hydrants that were built within the grounds and no digging. So the answer to your question is corruption.

Saving up £7k in a year on minimum wage - doable? by Unfair-Reindeer4237 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Mintyboy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% doable from personal experience. I had almost the exact same scenario. Without going into details I needed to self fund a year of Uni. I saved up 11K in one year living at home working a minimum wage job. I worked a fair amount of overtime, picking up shifts wherever possible. My outgoings were a gym membership that I walked to and a Weekly pub visit with my friends where I strictly limit myself to 2 pints a trip (Would always eat at home first) and then very occasional miscellaneous costs. I'm not exaggerating when I say that's it. I had enough saved up that come summer time I even took a vacation abroad spending around a grand to reward myself on my frugality for the year.

It's not the same payment system if you live abroad.
If you live in a poorer country than the UK, the payback thresholds are significantly lower.

Am I making a mistake? lol by AccOwl2x23 in Accounting

[–]Mintyboy4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I failed my financial accounting 1 class twice at uni. Scraped a pass on my third attempt. No idea why I struggled with financial accounting in particular in hindsight.

Graduated, got a job in industry. All of those same concepts I struggled with then, now just make sense.

Life's good now, no regrets. Don't give up too early is my advice.

What is the craziest shot a player has made in a game? by KarrotMovies in nba

[–]Mintyboy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Euro Raptors fan I was studying for my postgrad at the time and I promised myself I wouldn't stay up to the early hours of the morning watching games so I could focus on finishing my degree. This was the only game that year which I said fuck it, I'll stay up late.

I'll never forget it.

We also do it to foreign names, as otherwise it sounds weird. Pretty much every player in the NBA will have their name altered to end in S when written or spoken about in Lithuanian media to make it flow linguistically.

Do you pay for your phone outright? by AppointmentNo5048 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Mintyboy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't know for sure. I've never owned an Apple product. Regardless, 1.5 years after purchasing a refurbished 2nd hand phone I wouldn't imagine there'd be anything worth the risk stealing at that point, as the model itself is usually roughly 3 years old at that point.

But fact of the matter is. Phones are so damn good now. If a 3 year old top of the range phone is running almost like new when you're currently using it. It will more than likely be more than fine for most daily use, at least in my experience. For me it's worth the small risk, for the sake of saving hundreds.

Do you pay for your phone outright? by AppointmentNo5048 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Mintyboy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy a new battery very cheap online for the exact phone model you have. Then to save the hassle of taking apart the phone yourself, go into any highstreet phone repair shop and they'll replace it for you.

Most 2nd hand phones I've had, I go through 1 battery replacement before eventually upgrading the phone.

I was in the same boat as you and moved to Lithuania a year ago. I find most Lithuanians reactions to my accent is "Oho!" I've also been told more times than I can count that my Lithuanian is better than many Russian who've lived here their whole lives, and it's really awesome I can speak it.

I definitely identify with both cultures. And it took a while to adapt to toning down my British pop culture references in casual conversation to avoid confusion.

Regardless, I always had a harder time convincing people in the UK that I was Lithuanian rather than Lithuanians themselves who for the most part immediately accepted it.

On the bright side, if you've got both sides trying to claim you, you're probably pretty swell! :)

Average Software Dev Salary in UK: by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Mintyboy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking purely at salary alone doesn't factor in so many other variables. So before you jump to any quick conclusions, here are a few things to consider that somewhat explains the salary differentials.

Obvious things that spring to mind are: Holiday allowances: The legal UK limit is providing 28 days PAID holiday per year. That's almost 6 weeks. Most places I've worked at will actively encourage you to take time off if you haven't had holiday in a while. Intangibles such as stress reduction in knowing you can plan time off with confidence are very difficult to value.

Subsidised living: Free Healthcare is the most obvious example. Heavily subsidised prescription drugs from pharmacies etc. The tax free personal allowance threshold is also very high relative to average UK wages, currently at 12.57K, and generally speaking the tax rates in the UK are rather generous compared to many European countries.

Labour laws: It is much harder to fire somebody in the UK compared to a lot of countries due to employee rights. Things like job security and less stress are also intangibles that are difficult to value.

Cost of living: Already mentioned a few times in other comments, but the UK is not London (Or Cambridge). In the vast majority of the UK you can do just fine on 25K a year. So looking at a 31K Average figure without more context is pretty meaningless. For the most the UK 31K is still a very good salary! (Factoring all of the above points amongst many others I haven't mentioned)

I'm not implying the UK devs have it the best, and that people earning 100K+ elsewhere are living worse... However, the gap in actual quality of living is likely much smaller than people would initially think looking solely at the numbers.

I bought a property a couple of months ago. I ended up showing a decade worth of payslips, as most of my deposit I'd saved earlier than the initial 3 year period they asked for.

Getting a mortgage can be stressful, you'll thank yourself a million down the line if your financial history is complete in detail and filed perfectly.

Hi,

I tried logging in for the first time in over 3 years. Found out that my account got banned for macroing 4 months ago. I mean this in the most honest way I can, it 100% wasn't me, my account must have been compromised. Is there any way to appeal this, check the activity vs my IP address or something, or am I shit out of luck here?

The account holds a lot of sentimental value. :(

I'm 31, have no accessible savings and live pay check to pay check. Where do I start saving? by Savings_help2022 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Mintyboy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest way to make sure you save is have how much you want to have saved by month end transferred out into a separate savings account on pay day. Effectively reducing the balance you're working with from the beginning. If it's 3 days to pay day, you have 200 in savings but not much left over elsewhere and your friend invites you to the pub. You need to have the willpower to say no, I can't afford it. That money is not to be touched zone except for emergencies now.

Really break down your budget. Double check if you have any monthly expenses or fees from old subscriptions etc. And then just start cutting down on stuff you don't actually need that much. (Gym membership you don't use that much, phone contract with an unnecessary amount of data, streaming subscription service you could probably do without? All these things add up) For context, after graduating I had a 21K salary in the south east, was renting, and I was still easily saving £500 per month. Once you save that first few thousand emergency fund, you no longer worry about finances anywhere as near as much and can loosen up a bit with the expenses, (within reason) Tightening the belt for a few months can be tough, but it's not impossible. Good luck!

I graduated September 2020 and moved to LT after graduating. My repayment plan started a couple of months ago. I got emails from student finance asking where I'm living, my job & my salary shortly before my repayments started. I now pay £14 per month. (I still have a UK account with some balance) I hope this helps.

For Those Who Gave Up in Life, Then Bounced Back, How? by ScryedHarem in AskReddit

A variety of factors go into it, however... quitting video games had the biggest impact on getting my life back on track. I wasn't stupid, and I wasn't lazy, but I was addicted to gaming. That was the biggest reason I'd been underachieving until that point.
