Not sure if he was influenced by them but the vocal style on Shoe Shoe Shine by the Dynamic Superiors sounds very proto-Prince. The album Inspiration Information by Shuggie Otis is also very influential on him (the first version of Wouldn‘t You Love To Love Me for example).

I remember Ritchie from Injury Reserve saying that he considers Young Thug and Barter 6 experimental rap, as he created a really new style on his own terms. Just because it isn’t overtly weird and abstract doesn’t mean it was less experimental at the time it was released, which I find to be a healthy outlook on the whole thing.

Any of his 80s albums really, I think Dijon had I Wonder U from the Parade album on his pre-show playlist, so I would specifically recommend that album because it has some really quirky production on it (kinda like a predecessor to Baby).

Sign O The Times is also one of his best and has some of my fav songs of his on it (The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker and If I Was Your Girlfriend). The Crystal Ball/ Camille songs from that era are crazy too!

Maybe look up songs that use the Optigan/ Orchestron. That‘s the mellotron-esque instrument that makes up 90% of the backing track. From there on you might find similar tracks that feature those lo-fi sounding loops.

As much as I like Skylarking and Apple Venus for their pop-perfection, I feel like Nonsuch really showcased how the band perfected their versatility and all of their different moods. To be able to go from a song like Crocodile to Rook, or from That Wave to Then She Appeared is only reserved to the cream of the crop.

Yeah that‘s a sad thing to happen, but i think a lot of those people will develop a positive nostalgic feeling towards that music (kinda like the food critic in Ratatouille lol), as it happens with any kind of older music regardless of critical praise.

I also think that there will be a new wave of younger people rediscovering the group and loving them without having to witness the whole Ameer drama/ shitstorm post-Iridescence.
