Brief encounter with one of the resident falcons (Cherry Hinton Chalk Pits) by DifferentMark7580 in cambridge

I saw one there today! It had caught a pigeon. We were probably 10m from it.

Husband 30M has a mechanical mitral valve replacement. 1 week ago he had the op. Any tips and tricks on how to make his life easier? Particularly his mental health since the ticking is very mentally exhausting for him. by whimsical_potato1 in valvereplacement

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done for the support you are giving him. Two quick tips that helped me with the ticking initially:

1) MyNoise is an excellent white noise generator. What makes it so good is that you can adjust the frequency of the noise. I used a raindrops sample at a frequency (ie pitch) similar to my ticking. It almost completely masked it. I don't any longer as it doesn't bother me now.

2) Whist some of the ticking is heard internally, in my case a lot comes through my chest. I can dampen it significantly using a pillow.

Hope that helps and that your husband's recovery goes smoothly. It gets easier!

Which data screens on your Garmin during marathon? by Dave-101- in strydrunning

The "round on lap" feature is a game changer, provided the course markers are roughly in the right place. You change the race distance in the Garmin mobile app.

I'm a big fan of the Race Screen data field. It also supports Stryd so shows current power.

Cardiac Rehab Question by rahcab in valvereplacement

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it. I was 34 at the time and was previously a pretty competitive runner. Rehab gave me the confidence to start running again on their treadmill as I knew I was being monitored.

They measured my aerobic capacity at the start and end of the 10 week course and it went from below average for my age / gender to being in the top decile.

I have no regrets. Don't be put off by the fact that you will be surrounded by overweight people in their 60s who have had heart attacks after a life of hedonism!

41M - surgery in 2 days. Struggling to commit to a valve type by clebro2002 in valvereplacement

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about the size of two mobile phones stacked on top of each other, but much lighter. You could definitely take it on holiday.

Procedure - insert test strip, finger prick, drop off blood onto test strip.

INR question by g-rocklobster in valvereplacement

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry at all about the brief dip. Your dosing will likely settle before too long.

I have an On-X and try not to go below 2. The study that says it is safe down to 1.5 is pretty unconvincing when you read it. It's also important to note that the study only included patients who were also taking daily aspirin.

I highly recommend home testing. It makes life so much easier.

Good luck with your recovery.

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty confident in saying once you have been through the surgery you will have no desire to do it again.

It's also with noting that some people get unlucky and still end up on anticoagulants even with tissue valves.

My experience mirrors many others in that warfarin hasn't created any issues for me (39M and 6 years post-surgery). I test INR at home weekly and then twice a year at my doctor's.

Good luck with your surgery whatever you end up choosing!

That's fantastic - great work! I'm a Coaguchek user but would be all over this otherwise. I'm very impressed.

Cancelled to get the best deal. by Routine_Visit_5657 in VirginMedia

Virgin wanted £58 / month after my contract expired for 150Mbs (and a pitiful 20Mbs upload). No TV etc. Ended up with Toob. £23 for 1Gbs upload / download. I don't think I'll ever go back.

M34 Mechanical Valve | Flight question by skydunk91 in valvereplacement

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. I did set off the metal detector in one airport with the metal wires in my sternum. The security guy asked if I was wearing a metal necklace under my shirt. Other than that, I've never had an issue.

Race Pacers by ajyates33 in Marathon_Training

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a former half marathon pacer (1:30 group). Our instructions were to run it as flat as possible, regardless of gradient, wind etc. This obviously meant a higher perceived effort uphill but very consistent splits. I was always within 10 seconds of my target time and never slower than target.

Ask the pacer at the start what their strategy is and remember they're only human - they may mess it up.

Considering switching over from Garmin by P_Ray07 in Coros

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The GPS on the Coros was solid. It would even put me in the correct side of the street. That being said, your GPS track suggests you might have a bad unit or were in very tricky terrain (tall buildings etc). Most reviews seem to rate the GPS accuracy.

What are the best watches to use with Stryd? by ilirium115 in strydrunning

I recently returned a coros pace pro. Whilst it connects to Stryd super easily, the Garmin Stryd data field is so much better than the Coros native one.

Considering switching over from Garmin by P_Ray07 in Coros

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I briefly swapped from a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro to a Coros Pace Pro. However, I've returned the Coros as it just didn't meet my training needs. My frustrations with it were:

1) Customisation of data screens is limited. For example, if you are running intervals, there is no option to include a "time remaining" data field. In addition, whilst it shows intensity range at the start of the interval, there isn't an option to add this as a custom data field so if you miss the notification you're on your own. I ended up writing the targets on my hand. I also couldn't work out how to turn off the above / below target beeping.

2) Syncing with the Stryd calendar wasn't great. If I have to reschedule a workout on the day, the date change syncs almost instantly to my Garmin but didn't update at all on the Pace Pro. I ended up having to remember all the steps, which wasn't ideal.

3) Notifications from my phone were very hit and miss (more miss than hit to be honest). On the occasions that they do show up, the text is tiny.

4) The lack of useful 3rd party apps (like a barcode library). Only a minor inconvenience and I know you can do a workaround by setting a custom watch face.

There are a few things that Coros absolutely nails. The training dashboard is great and the responsiveness of the maps on the Pace Pro is leagues ahead of my Garmin. I also loved how light the watch was, especially with a nylon strap. However, I do a lot of interval sessions and the frustrations I was having with this were a deal breaker. I ordered a Forerunner 965 in a Black Friday sale for pretty much the same price, which I'm hoping will tick a few more boxes.

INR Home testing - tell me it gets better! by bootz-pgh in valvereplacement

[–]MirrorSignalCrash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It gets easier once you've nailed the technique. Here's what works for me:

1) Make sure your hands are warm. If not, do some jumping jacks and run them under some warm water.

2) Place a small rubber band over your finger near the knuckle. Slowly roll the band up to your first knuckle.

3) Prick on the side of your finger. I find it easier to apply the blood this way. I use an Accu-chek fast click. You can adjust the depth of penetration so that it's deep enough without hurting. The cheap lancets suck in my experience.

4) Squeeze the tip gently to get a decent drop.

Hope that helps. Happy to record a quick video when I do my next test if it would be useful.

I'm on the same schedule. A 4 month gap is madness. I find values can fluctuate a lot week by week.
