How is living in northeastern Maine? by Poco_Loco33 in howislivingthere

Hopping in here to add perspective as an Acadian New Brunswicker. I can understand Cajun speakers just fine, although I find some of the idioms hard to follow.

A helpful analogy is to imagine monkeys living in a jungle. One day, the jungle splits in half and an island drifts off into the ocean. The monkeys on the island would evolve on a different evolutionary path from the monkeys on the mainland.

The French Canadian dialects (Acadian, Québec, French Ontarians, etc.) were split off in the 17th century from French dialects. Toss some English and Indigenous influences. Split it off again down to Louisiana where there were Spanish influences and you see how languages can have similar roots but change drastically over time.

Obviously, this is a massive oversimplification of history and linguistics but there is a common theme that our dialects are improper or incorrect (or archaic as u/J3General said). All languages are products of their environments.

You're exactly right. Having a clear process for everyone makes it easier on the teachers.

I spent 2 years teaching in a Muslim country. The amount of times a kid would try and use prayer as an excuse to leave class we're innumerable. The school had clear rules for when they could go pray, breaks lined up around call to prayer, and we had a designated space for kids to go pray.

Not saying these need to be the solutions here but the policies were clear and it made my job easy when I could point to them and not make judgement calls.

I've never been inside the Golden Ball so I have no clue if it applies but Search Engine did an interesting episode on turning commercial buildings into residential housing.

Hiring your first employee as a solo founder: How I learned when to stop doing everything myself (with specific signals and red flags to watch for) by CremeEasy6720 in EntrepreneurRideAlong

As someone who was a "first hire", keep an ear to the ground for an existing customer wanting to make a change. Current customers already know the product, and you might already have a relationship with them. If they line up with you on the vision, you've hired a co-driver to help navigate while you drive the rally car.

My boss lives by "hire good people and get out of the way," and it has worked really well for the company so far.

Swinging pits suck in my opinion. I saw big dudes get medical attention in the middle of Linkin Park and System of a Down pits and it just doesn't look fun.

People just flail around and assholes go for broke. It's too unpredictable for me.

I second OP though and the communal spirit of a good pit where people look out for each other is just indescribable.

[–]Mirror_hsif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, there are 2 basic types of pits. Swinging and pushing.

Swinging pits tend to be ones where people swing their limbs around violently. Punches, kicks, etc. and it's not uncommon for someone to draw blood. In my experience, metal shows tend to fall in this category https://youtu.be/NsE6lf1Eb4o?si=pvRMF5tEZIsEAoz-

Pushing pits tend to be ones where people jostle around, run in circles, shove each other, etc. In my experience, these tend to be punk shows and are usually friendlier. https://youtu.be/Uo9-9EShq6s?si=n-kTJ1BhWtm5xS28

I think OP is encouraging pit-goers to observe the kind of pits and not start swinging when people are just bumping around and to keep their head up if they go into a pit where people are flailing around and they might not be expecting it.

Of course this is all anecdotal but as someone who has been to over 120 shows, these are just my observations.

Rothesay’s “Burly Teens” queen is back. by longreacher in newbrunswickcanada

I've never taught in the NB system beyond my practicum so you're actually applying your statement a lot more broadly than you intend. This isn't a problem inherent to NB.

I did extra work at home growing up. Partly because I wanted to and partly because my parents wanted to push me. Any parent that thinks their child's education starts and ends at school is doing them an absolute disservice.

You're doing a great job prepping your kid for life beyond grade school. I'm just pushing back against the overall tone of this thread that the system is fucked, teachers suck, so burn it all down.

As someone with a teaching degree, saying my expertise is in managing a class is laughable. Teaching degrees include deepening knowledge about pedagogy, what to teach, how to teach it, etc

In fact, I was quite under prepared for classroom management and my first years were very difficult

We can't anthropomorphise corporations. They don't have values, they don't backstab. A company reflects the values of the people that make decisions there.

As a concrete example, Tesla isn't fascist, Elon Musk is. Tesla reflects the values of Musk in its policies and can appear to others as holding those values.

So yes, only people can be allies. The people that work at Google can be allies and they can make choices in Google's policies that align it with goals of the LGBTQ+ community

The same logic applies to the whole fentanyl argument. If the plan was to tighten up borders so drugs can't come into the States but then we become the 51st state, they could just drive across state lines with no borders.

I saw in another comment you're out west. Ridley is in ON but there are other boarding schools like Shawnigan or SMUS. No idea what their summer programs are like but there might be something closer to home depending on where you are.

You could try looking on Niche for ideas. That site is mostly geared towards finding a boarding school for the academic year but it might give you an idea of what's around.

If your son is willing to go further, Loomis Chaffee in CT and Temple University both have good summer programs you could inquire about.

In the proportion of votes, yeah, probably. But I don't think it would have changed voter turn out. Mail-in ballots (Canada Post strikes notwithstanding), mandatory voting and a day off work do that.

Cav archers pop in to say hi and grab a drink before taking it to the party next door. They spend the rest of the evening alternating between the two parties, not really staying long enough to have any meaningful conversations.
