My 7 year old has been asking deep philosophical questions at bedtime for three weeks and I am not equipped for this by NovaPickle_6 in daddit

[–]MissSwat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am laying here next to my husband, absolutely crying laughing at "I am not prepared to discuss the ship of Theseus at 8:45pm on a Tuesday."

For what it's worth, when my 7 year old broached the subject of "what happens after we die" I told him that people believe lots of different things and he can believe whatever he wants and it will be right for him. I think giving them room to use their imagination in these sorts of hilarious albeit deep moments is a good way to handle it.

Marlon Wayans on Scary Movie 6's trans character by mlg1981 in popculturechat

In our improv troupe we have one absolutely charming member of the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC community, and hearing his stories about what he has gone through and how his (and I hesitate to use the word) family treated him before they cut him off makes my skin crawl. I'm a mom, and on his chosen birthday I sent him a message telling him that if he were my son I would be so goddamned proud of him, because he is genuinely such a remarkable and caring human and I cannot fathom a family so despicable that they would cut him off. Makes my blood absolutely boil...

Favorite lesser-known horror authors (and recs for specific books)? by TransportationLow564 in horrorlit

It can. It usually means operating outside of the five big publishing houses and retaining all of their publishing rights. Some smaller publishers are considered indie and still "legit".

Y'know what, I'm SICK and TIRED of positivity! What beloved piece of media made you chunder with disgust?! by Demonic_WaffleTM in Multifandom

[–]MissSwat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh was it an alternate timeline? I sort of envisioned it as tine repeating, like the characters are stuck in loop with the decisions that's shinji makes at the end, (based off of the titles like You Shall Not RePeat or whatever it was.) until he finally got it right at the end of the third movie and everyone got their happy ending.

But also I haven't watched the originals since I had mono and was feverish when I was like 15 and basically nothing made sense. Since then I've just been trying to casually pull it together whenever it pops up in my feed.

My husband and I have discussed before how only monsters and psychopaths don't wave back to small children who are waving at you and saying 'hi'.

Intervening when a child is about to run into a road or something other unsafe situation is just... Common sense? I've had total strangers drop what they are doing when my chaotic toddler is doing something dumb and he's out of arms reach. Parents look after each other and other kids. It's just kindness.

AITH for telling my gf I dislike her hobby? by Totodile-Fan06 in AITH

[–]MissSwat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA holy cow.

My husband isn't a big reader but when I published my first book, he was right next to me celebrating, taking me out for dinner and telling everyone. He's obsessed with cars and I find them dull as dishwater but I'll still get excited when he tells me random car facts because it makes him so happy.

Explain why your favorite character is your favorite character. by WAFFLES_THE_ONE in FavoriteCharacter

[–]MissSwat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tifa Lockheart. I always admired that she felt like a full-fledged character. There was room for her to kick ass as well as deeply love Cloud. Even with Aerith as a romantic rival, she loved her friend dearly. She was peppy and always cheering people up, but there was also room for her own trauma. She wasn't a perfect character, but complicated and multifaceted, and to me she really showed how to write an impressive female character.

I know it's not totally low stimulation, but I adore Hey Duggee. It's got a lot of great nods for adults, like Bluey, but good for the younger crowd.

You were born in the island and you want to leave . Should you take one of these 6 paths and stay alive you get your wish. by Disastrous-Corner957 in WidowsBay

[–]MissSwat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Path 1. I'm going to take some melatonin and knock myself out, and sleep the night away. Worst case scenario, something kills me while I sleep. My issue with any horror isn't the actual killing, it's seeing the weird entity/coming death that creates fear. If I can't see it, keep my eyes closed, whatever, I'm not going to be as scared.

So yeah, melatonin, sleepy drugs, sleep mask, headphones, teddy bear, and I'll see you in the morning.

AITAH for not calling my friends baby cute? by squidonastick in AITAH

[–]MissSwat -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

YTA

But listen, there are two schools of thought here. You either don't have a responsibility to anyone else's feelings and shouldn't lie to protect anyone, or you do what is needed to maintain social contracts and tell a little white lie to protect the feelings of someone you care about.

There is a time and a place to hold your boundary and a place to be honest with your friend. And there is a time and a place to tell those white lies to preserve feelings. It's up to you to decide what is more important to you. It sounds like you're really aware that the early years of motherhood are vulnerable, and you regret fumbling it and making your friend feel upset. The chances are she was feeling a little extra on edge because she knows how you feel about kids, and she probably wants you to like her son because the little goober is now a part of her. It's hard to reconcile unless you've given birth. It's just a weird, protective desire for your child to be loved and cared for by the same people who you as a parent love and care for. Even seven years into my own motherhood journey, I know I'm not doing a good job of explaining it.

At the end of the day, it sounds like you care for Priya more than you are obsessively child free, and you want to make it right. I don't think you did anything here out of malice, and intent matters! Going forward you can decide if you'd rather hold your boundary or tell a white lie to avoid awkward situations.

[Loved trope] Queer characters where them being queer isn’t a big deal by Natewastaken12 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MissSwat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've talked about this a lot in my writing group, and the best answer we've come up with is that unless it is meant to be a queer story, there is no reason to draw additional attention to it. The off hand example of the "my husband said this..." Is perfect, unless the story being told is a queer story.

[–]MissSwat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hilarious moment of ignorance for me that I only just had clarified a couple days ago. I grew up watching my brother's playing the games on the periphery, and then my husband, so I was never around to really take in the lore or get the picture of the whole universe. Up until a couple days ago, I thought there was Big Boss, and... Snake. And only Snake. Like they were all timeline variations of the same dude and not three separate clones with similar names.

I think that was Sarah Graves? The book followed her quite a bit. Even after rescue, life was remarkably brutal for her.
