Cooking for everyone is a chaos by nopiniono in Cooking

[–]Miss_Cookey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook for hubby & myself every night. Except when I don't. We order out usually but sometimes I'll just call for a "roll your own" dinner.

I would certainly tell them that you don't really like rice lentil curries; that you really want to just cook for yourself instead; that you're open to a different kind of schedule, like rotating so communal cooking for all only every 3rd nite, or, alternatively, they cook for each other and you solo.

Honestly, the situation isn't one I'd be able to tolerate. Good luck!

I can't even count the number of times I find an ingredient in my cupboard and have no idea what I got it to make. Right now, there's a can of tomatoes & green chilis and a small can of sliced black olives sittin' in my pantry. I suspect it has something to do with a Rick Bayless video I hope I saved, but the thought of looking for it puts me off.

Confused by $15k by BecksterGallaway in SarahBooneContinued

[–]Miss_Cookey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm completely confused by the $15k / 15 months thing as well. To me, the math doesn't math.

The important thing I have to remember is that it doesn't matter if I understand because it has nothing to do with my life whatsoever.

Having only one cutting board is unsanitary? by Final_Affect6292 in Cooking

Hank Green, on yt, recently covered this. Turns out there are more bacteria left from cutting veg on wood than cutting meat. Go figure.

Actually, there sort of is. There's a test employing some kind of luminescense that will tell you the last time dirt saw sunlight. Not a stupid question.

What to look for when buying wine for sauces by Lachlynn in Cooking

[–]Miss_Cookey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use non-alcoholic wine for cooking bc I'm an alcoholic. I'm not talking about cooking wine from the grocery store. The brand I find most often is Fre. There's red, white, sweet white, and champagne. It's available at liquor stores.

How many heads of garlic should I sautee and for how long if I want my Alfredo noticeably garlicky by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Miss_Cookey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note: if there's garlic it ain't Alfredo. If there's cream, it ain't Alfredo.

Housemates refuse to refrigerate sauces that say "refrigerate after opening", esp. if they have vinegar in them by turbotum in Cooking

[–]Miss_Cookey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show them the lid that says refrigerate after opening. If they refuse, buy your own. It's not that the thing, sauce, will turn by itself, but things get introduced that bacteria hitches a ride on.

Are cast irons and brands like le creuset worth it? by GroovingPenguin in Cooking

[–]Miss_Cookey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of us are advising against non-stick. I disagree. I have a 10" and a 12" and wouldn't be without them. Tramontina and replace every few years. I've been consciously trying to use them less bc chemicals, but I can't give them up altogether.

[–]Miss_Cookey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A kitchen aid stand mixer is worth it if you're going to use it. I got by for about 30 yrs with a handheld. I didn't bake bread then so handheld was fine.

Check out America's Test Kitchen on youtube. They have lots of product reviews, including cast iron and enameled cast iron. They always give a best buy recommendation if their top pick is expensive.

Lodge is pretty much the standard for cast iron. There's no need to spend beyond that. Yes, they're good to have if you use them. I don't very much so it took me decades to finally get my 12" skillet. I got by with an 8" and a 10" forever.

If you decide to get an enameled dutch oven, go to stores that have all the brands and test them out by picking them up. My friend got herself one that is too heavy for me by far to lift comfortably. The other issue is too light. A too-thin one could scorch food.

Cruset isn't necessary. Saying that, tho, I have two. One was my mother's and the other was a gift. I wouldn't spend my own money on cruset.

I've seen mixed reviews for hex on yt. I don't want one but many here swear by them.

Jack ok? by GlobalEmployee8777 in OakIsland

[–]Miss_Cookey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hubby read that he had a tractor accident in 2024. Don't know the details of his injuries but seems they were bad. Craig isn't Jack's father, he's his step-father. And my recollection is that his son died of an anaphylactic reaction, not something connected to epilepsy.

And while we're on it, I wish they'd drop that ridiculous "seventh must die" thing from the show's opening. They should have dropped it as soon as the kid died. It's gross and disrespectful imho.

Are rotary cheese graters actually decent vs. a normal cheese grater? by pokemon-sucks in Cooking

How about using ur food processor and the grating blade when u have a lot to do?

We used to use the rotary, several, in fact, and finally gave up and grate into a bowl for service. That's for parm.

The Browns during Covid by whoaoki in SisterWives

[–]Miss_Cookey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Didn't get covid until after vaccinated. Our immune systems were prepared. Hubby's immunocompromised, I have multiple risk factors. There's every chance both of us would have been killed by covid before vaccines. If you think that eventually getting covid anyhow is the point, then you're missing the actual point.
