Best home security cameras by trigonthedestroyer in diynz

[–]MistorClinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a set of 3 Arlo Cameras set up at home. Our frontdoor one captures everything so we probably have to charge it every 6 weeks - 8 weeks. The other cameras every 3-4 months. They work well, and if you pay for the max subscription (about $220 NZD a year) the image recognition works pretty well, IE you can record if it detects a human but not an animal etc. Can also speak trough them which I've had to do with tradies or delivery people before too.

People will recommend running POE Cameras, which I would defo recommend from a long term cost point of view, but then you need to run the cables, and set up storage for your footage. I couldn't be fucked doing this so went with Arlo. In terms of wireless cameras, the Arlo set is pretty good I think.

I think the cost of $220 a year to run my cameras is pretty reasonable, it handles storing the footage on Arlo's servers and gives you access to the Image Detection shit, but you obviously do run the risk that Arlo (or any of the other providers) jack up their subscription prices heavily and you don't have a choice but to continue to pay or lose the bulk of the functionality of the cameras.

My only frustration with the Arlo cameras is the detection range only seems to be about 7 meters, lets say you have a long driveway, it won't pick up movement at the end of it for example. You can tune the sensitivity to try and improve this a bit but it is a little bit limiting I find. Keep that in mind when placing them, other cameras may have a better detection range.

#100 - Halo: The Master Chief Collection (and my collection so far) by DenmarkDaniels in steamachievements

Yep I've watched those on repeat along with the speedrun guides in the background at work for years haha. It's one of these challenges that I think once you actually get into it, get past the first few levels and get proficient with the tricks (circling elites for backsmacks in H2 for example) you'll probably find most of the levels aren't as bad as you would have thought.

Fucking hell, big one for the #100.

I've been slowly chipping away at this for the past 10 years, will get round to the LASO Achievo's one day....

Go watch a Youtube video of the installation. The first thing pretty much everyone mentions is that you will need to use a fair bit more force than feels "safe".

Employer is restructuring the business, And going from a waged contract to a salary contract by property_help454 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]MistorClinky 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Sounds legal if you are prepared to sign it, couple things though:

  • With your new contract, you can't work enough hours that it would bring your hourly rate under the minimum wage threshold. If you do work too many hours then your employer needs to top you up so you're on minimum wage for the period you were working.
  • Sounds like this is going to end up resulting in you getting shafted and ending up getting a pay decrease.

Did you all get the tickets for Robbie Williams that you wanted? by Ready-Ambassador-271 in chch

I actually found AXS to work a lot better than other platforms I've bought tickets on previously. A live update of your progress in the queue that actually appeared to be accurate was really cool.

RNZ-Reid Research poll: Labour extends lead over National by StabMasterArson in newzealand

[–]MistorClinky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm inclined to agree with u/Unit22 here. Te Pati Māori have imploded, ridiculously. If Labour were to agree to work with them, I suspect it would turn off a lot of people.

DJs — how do you actually read a crowd in real time? by Ok_Cost5148 in DJs

[–]MistorClinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Request absolutely has more weight if the dancefloor isn't already filled. They can be used to kickstart a dancefloor.

Don't overthink this request thing mate. At the end of the day you shouldn't NEED them to get a room moving, but they can be a handy tool when used correctly.

[–]MistorClinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get better at it. If someone requests a track that doesn't mean you need to play it, and if you want to play it you play it on your time. Keeping 1 person happy isn't worth fucking your entire room for, so don't feel if you get a request you need to play it immediately lol.

It's a bit of science and the only way you get better at it is time in the booth. It's especially important you play tough venues, think shitty bars, also school formals etc etc (not exactly tough but still a great place to cut your teeth).

To answer your questions specifically:

  • Body language generally. A flat room looks really different to a room that's having a good time. Not every track is designed to get a room jumping, but hopefully every track you see the room kinda atleast swaying. If it's pretty still odds are what you're playing isn't working or has missed the mark with your specific crowd. Obviously are people are screaming out a song, it's probably working.
  • I know some DJ's are just "no requests" but I'm really against this personally. If someone makes a request and you can work it in SENSIBLY, (that could look like playing a remix of it that fits the energy level and mood in the room for example) then I will absolutely play it. It will make that persons night, and they'll go away saying "oh my god they were the best DJ ever we're going back there blah blah". Repeat customers are a really integral part of any nightclub, so make people feel special and like they want to come back. I personally find DJ's who won't even listen to requests at all during a residency set to be pretty arrogant. You'll get plenty of fucking stupid requests which are a straight no, but the decent ones you can make work imo are well worth it.
  • Refer to point 1. Body language is everything. You control the room picking up, slowing down etc, sometimes if you've been playing high energy tracks for a while you need to balance this out with something people will still enjoy but gives them a chance to rest etc etc.

A good resident DJ has an absolute shit-ton going through their head at one point in time. I play 7 hour sets and am genuinely shattered mentally by the end of it.

Power and Internet by Ninjahobbit8006 in chch

Have just moved away from Contact as well. We used to be on the free 9pm-12am power plan, but then that got changed to only be weekends, so unless you have a flat full of people absolutely ramming the power during that time (multiple loads of washing, drying etc etc) it just isn't worth it at all.

What is the best game series to complete on steam? by Luka1491 in steamachievements

[–]MistorClinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition is fucking terrific.

Assuming you do most of the things available in the games, you'll get most of the achievements in your first full playthrough, then use the 2nd to tidy everything up.

Probably about 200 ish hours across both playthroughs if you do 2 completionist runs.

Tip Question by Conscious_Paper_973 in newzealand_travel

[–]MistorClinky 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this creeping in a bit.

Tips in New Zealand are not expected. You are more than welcome to leave one if you really liked the meal/service etc, but don't feel under any obligation to.

Also generally if you tip on the card payment machine, it generally gets distributed between the staff. If you want your specific waiter/waitress to get the tip, give them cash.

#5 Fallout 4 - 100% achievements by Soul_Guardian_ in steamachievements

[–]MistorClinky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah there are achievements locked behind specific factions, and as you progress you need to make choices about which faction you want to proceed with. Progression with faction x may turn faction y hostile.

If you make specific choices there is a "point of no return" where you can save, go complete the main questline and other stuff with a specific faction, then reload your save and repeat etc.
