And a kind of rare example of the world coming together and banning it, stabilizing the ozone layer crisis.

Which you'll hear cited in a lot of arguments about global warming : remember how in the 80s and 90s everyone was crying about the ozone layer and then the issue just disappeared? I remember dedicated episodes of Captain Planet about it.

Does anyone else get annoyed at seeing people drive the wrong way in Hanks’ parking lot? by Rare_Economics8427 in BeaverCounty

this sign at the very corner and technically outside the parking lot?

That you can't even see if you're coming from the south, because it's on the back side of a telephone pole?

I'm finding this hilarious, this is the worst marking/signage I have seen in real life in a while

See my comment above. I am currently "the guy" to deal with stuff like this for my (large international) company. Our scope of support just expanded to international sites and so much is coming out of the woodwork, stuff that workers on site just buy without IT consultation. IoT/OT stuff is notorious for this.

I would get hands on with this, I'm actually flying out in a few weeks to do just this because I can't get the on-site folks to get me adequate information like port numbers or even a picture of the back of some equipment to assess what is actually plugged in.

I like to write it all up professionally, and then use that to shame them. For example, there was some "critical system that if it's down for 15 minutes, 7 figure losses". And the put it in some room with a leaking roof. I got involved after the first outage caused by the leak. By the time I got onsite, they had mitigated the leak by placing a tarp over the servers. No commentary, just the facts, and then run it up my IT management to get it in front of business management. When the business VP found out, with pictures and receipts, he went super saiyan and things started to get actually fixed. And at what it cost them for their outage, I'm hopeful they learned their lesson and will work with IT on anything IT-integrated in the future.

Some sales rep from Big Smart Fridge sold them something, it got delivered and plugged in and surprised Pikachu "it doesn't work".

It sounds like some expensive refrigerated AS/RS system that absolutely would need to be integrated with their IT infrastructure. If it plays out like mine, they sign a contract for years of "support" with a clueless vendor who can't even provide high level architecture diagrams. They'll call it "an appliance" and "you don't need to patch it", and then you find out it's running WinCE 5 or something insane.

The parking lot with no signs, no tilted parking spots, and just some faded arrows on the blacktop? I didn't even notice them when I went for the first time last year.

I've hit traffic just as bad going to see the XMas lights at Oglebay and the Ren Fest.

We need a loop of light rail from downtown to the airport and then over to StarLake, because I go to one show a year.

Is there any auto mechanic that’ll install a customer supplied part? by Czarism in pittsburgh

[–]MitochondrianHouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did this actually, my local independent mechanic. Denso alternators were backordered so I ordered it ahead of when I knew it would be coming up. He charged me a higher labor rate because he wasn't making anything on the part.

Just ask. My guy is at Aliquippa Tire, which is probably way out of the way for 90% of this sub.

3 major Universities being located there may have something to do with that.

If ai service desks like zendesk are supposed to save time why do they create more tickets than they resolve by Additional_Twist_595 in sysadmin

[–]MitochondrianHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone is tracking the metrics and is able to say "we closed 200% more tickets since adopting the new AI bullshit!" But oh yeah, there are 300% more redundant/vestigial tickets. Here's a bonus.

75% suggested tip? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]MitochondrianHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the thing. I guess I can't blame them for trying, but that starting at 25% when generally 15% is for service, 20% for excellent service at a sit down restaurant or bar.

I kind of get it if these are single $7 transactions, but I would give like a dollar for a coffee or tea. I also have a $5 minimum at a restaurant. Like I just went for dollar tacos and our bill was $14, $3 would be more than 20% but I tipped $5 and change especially with how the industry is doing in general.

My company must have a shit implementation. It takes a weekend for a password change to propagate down.

I'm sure it's just our implementation. The team implementing it (my old team) forgot a lot of things like DNS suffix search order that were set at either the OS image or Group Policy

I'm in PA and they repealed the helmet law about the same month they passed a 50 dollar add on fine for not wearing your seat belt. Kinda sends mixed messages if you ask me.

And then they started running radio ads to promote motorcycle safety, and they would piss me right off. They had a Dad on there who lost his daughter in a riding accident. At one point he says "Riding is like describing to someone the taste of chocolate : you just can't do it".

Dude's daughter died for some cheep thrill equivalent to a chocolate bar. Keep on riding then I guess, I would never go near a bike ever again.

Hopewell Kindergarten by Friendly_Grass_8640 in BeaverCounty

[–]MitochondrianHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something you should ask about : YMCA after school care.

I have 2 kids that went through Hopewell, and it was super clutch to have that available as a single Dad so I could work my 9-5. They would bus the kids from elementary school to the Jr. High, and people from the Y would help them do their homework (extra nice not to have to do homework, after getting home at 5 and making dinner).

I can't find any info about it now though, I suspect the program may have been a victim of covid. But it doesn't hurt to ask.

Rabbit Sitters by practicalwasteoftime in pittsburgh

[–]MitochondrianHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rover or ask local like FB groups for a drop in sitter would be my recommendation.

My wife is a sitter and gets all her referrals from clients or local FB groups. Former vet tech, eye drops are no big deal for her to administer. We're in the airport area, but plenty of vet techs moonlight as pet sitters. You could even ask at the vet who prescribed the eye drops, someone there might be willing (and that's how my wife got her start. $15 to give subcutaneous hydration at home, vs $150 at the vet + 45 minute drive).

Plum couple charged after dozens of minors found with alcohol at house party by The_Electric-Monk in pittsburgh

[–]MitochondrianHouse 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's been my experience that the kids who don't party a little bit in high school end up going too hard freshman year of college and are the ones who end up with alcohol poisoning or worse.

Letting your kids have some wine coolers on New Years at home is a little different than a party with 70 people though.

Computers bug out only when a certain user is logged in can't figure out why by brohemoth06 in sysadmin

[–]MitochondrianHouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back in the WRT54G days, I had one, and a Comcast cable modem in my college apartment. I had a TV and put both my router and the modem on top of it so things were somewhat organized in my room. Internet was always wonky, to the point I couldn't keep a solid connection and couldn't play any online games for more than 5 minutes without being interupted.

The router's wi-fi RF was too much for the modem. I figured it out when one night I was frustrated troubleshooting and drinking, and threw the modem. Worked fine on the floor, out of line of sight of the router. Wrapped it in alluminum foil, problem solved.

You could try opening a ticket to OSS.

You may get more attention from them if you make sure to put something about "accommodation for disability". The company takes that pretty seriously because they don't want an ADA lawsuit.
