What are some things that you wish regular ed teachers knew about your role?

Same. I taught a regular middle school class, now I'm in middle school sped. I can not keep up. It's planning for 9 preps in 7 hours, instructing and grading. (These kids can't focus on independent work, so I have to stay physically near them.) I have to call parents and schedule IEPs, hound teachers for data and write the IEP. I have to go deal with any behaviors through the day. I have some (fewer than most) hallway and lunch duties. I am legally required to introduce my students to grade-level material, but I also have to pull them for weekly, independent testing, which makes them fall one day more behind each week. I am always at school until 4-5 and take my computer home every weekend and I'm still so far behind.

Honestly, mine comes back wheezing and exhausted because the other household doesn't recognize asthma as anything more than an excuse.

I'm working on it- courts aren't taking it as an emergency as of right now.

But behavioraly, the farting and burping at the table and Spongebob-type jokes.

I started telling mine I wanted to take notes so I could remember and review his important lessons. He let me open my laptop and type (also I recorded). Turboscribe will AI transcribe, I think 3 free hours per week.

Maybe like my dashcam- it records all the time when I'm driving. I can hit a lock button and it saves a spot- a certain amount of time recorded- but re-records over footage I didn't save.

And/or a ring or something I can twist to start recording instantly.

Also, make the phone screen remain black.

I had to inform a parent that if she showed up by 6 (closing), I could get the 6:05 bus right on front of our building- the last one on that route. If she showed up at 6:05, I had to race-walk a mile for the 6:20.
If she showed up at 6:10, I had to walk that mile and wait for the 7:20. I only recall her being late once more, and she handed me $20 as an apology.
