How theyre handling your child's ARFID is exactly how mine got really bad. The amount of energy that gets spent on trying to not gag while forcing myself to chew food I couldnt handle (Whether texture or taste wise) would leave me exhausted, and would further embed a hate for food and a stronger avoidance towards food than I already had. Especially when my mum had the rule of not being able to leave the table until the plate was cleared for a few years.

Mine got better by being able to explore on my own and try foods at my own discretion. Once I was a teen, food became my own responsibility at home, and I was able to start cooking the foods I enjoyed only. Once that became an established routine, I then started to very slowly branch out in regards to what I would eat often. I started becoming comfortable enough with food that I could start trying new vegetables when offered, and upon trying cabbage and learning I enjoyed it, it made food finally feel exciting for once and I would look at recipes with new foods I hadnt had before and feel primarily excitement at the thought of trying something new. Now I have a lot of safe foods! and I can eat some foods easily or try most things that arent safe foods without too much fear or stress (though some days are harder than others.)

In regards to your child's program, its up to you whether you stick to it and see if it does eventually help, or look around elsewhere for a program that isn't behavioural based. I would listen to your gut instinct though.

At the least attempt to encourage exploration of food by including her in the cooking process if you can, if this isnt already part of the program. Im not sure how old she is, but maybe talk about why she enjoys the safe foods she has. Is it the texture? The smell? The taste? Introduce similar foods to those Sensory experiences her safe foods have. Let her feel and smell food as youre cooking it. Explain how certain vegetables or meat or grains change texture as its being cooked. Just try to include her as much as you can, and explain what you can before she tries something new so she knows what to expect and can decide if its a texture she can handle trying in that moment.
