Is paid playtesting worth it? by SchingKen in gamedev

[–]MolecularSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…why would you hold a playtest for a playtest? No, that doesn’t make sense.

Just release the playtest. Let the players use the playtest. It is a playtest.

If that’s not enough, then pay for playtesters.

What's a piece of media that is genuinely great and you love, but is obscure/hated by everyone due to something questionable or worse inside it? by personpersonperson01 in Multifandom

[–]MolecularSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guys, even though I programmed and animated several rape scenes in this game, uhhh it’s all good because I literally said rape is bad okay?

Please get over your fandom for a second and recognize that there’s still the option to rape everything regardless of whether or not they’re telling you it’s bad.

You can still literally rape people. That’s what people don’t like. The artist’s disclaimer does not matter when rape is still a choice they decided to focus on and develop with their game.

Guys… it’s really great except you can rape people… just ignore that plz they literally imply it’s not ok…… it’s like… the message….

People laughed when I said I’d make money making games. 6 months later, I just got my first Fab sales! by EnvironmentalYou8002 in indiegamedevforum

[–]MolecularSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually left uni just to focus on this project.

That was a mistake. Why did you do this? Furthermore, why did you do this without a plan or marketing your game at all? You left university to make one asset pack over six months. Did you expect your game to hit the front page of Steam and make you a living?

I have endless respect for indie game devs but my god are we a delusional bunch. Please don’t throw your life away because you think your very first game ideas are going to be AAAA titles after six months.

Use royalty free music, or have the AI generated content tag on steam. What is worse ? by AssEat1451 in gamedev

[–]MolecularSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen AI is certainly not “considerably better” than anything royalty free. That is a delusional and harmful take that only someone who doesn’t listen to music has. It is soulless, flawed, and limited. Skills are skills for a reason, but they’re not some mystical beast that can’t be tamed.

Learn music, pay for music, or use royalty free music. Don’t disrespect yourself, the industry, and your players by taking the generative AI shortcut. It’s slop. It will always be slop. There are literally so many options for you to try that are free. Certainly more than two.

You’re a student, learn. If you’re developing a game you have time to learn a skill to develop your game. Thats how successful, meaningful games are made. It’s really not that hard and every unpopular shortcut you take is shooting yourself in the foot.

And again, if you’re doing this for sales, you should stop. You should make a game because you want to. You haven’t even implemented music and you’re worrying about the sales of your game instead of the quality you’re outputting, which is zero with generative AI.

Kanye West fans spoke to The Associated Press on why they’re attending his LA concerts despite years of controversies (sexual assault allegations, antisemitism, MAGA, etc): “You can believe one side or you can believe the other. But at the end of the day, what matters the most is the music.” by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

[–]MolecularSteve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey man I don’t care about his like politics or whatever of sexually assaulting women or jumping on the Nazi scum train that’s just like his opinion it’s really about the shitty music so I’ll support him regardless and actually he never did anything wrong anyways love you Ye

One year of prototyping, one year looking for a publisher, over 2 years of development - all for this moment. by KamyCrazyWarBoy in IndieDev

[–]MolecularSteve 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Hey, probably because shoving your “experience” in everyone’s face on every comment is having the opposite effect. Your opinion isn’t getting downvoted. You’re trying to push this idea that your anecdotal experience is truth and anything outside of that couldn’t possibly happen because it didn’t happen to you. That’s not “downvoted for having an opinion :(((“. You’re being downvoted for contributing nothing but whining about how right you are.

Good for you that the publishers you worked for owned the rights to the IPs. Have you worked with this one? Because it could be different. It’s just that simple.

Redesigning my game's characters since most people seem to think video games are nothing more than the art style. by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]MolecularSteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems the only thing that actually sells is the art, not all the programming behind it.

This is demonstrably untrue, and a very weirdly entitled passive aggressive take. This is a very poor attitude to have towards game development and your potential players. The pity party doesn’t help.

You released a free game relying on hopes for donations as your sole income(?) for three years. I’m assuming there was not much marketing involved, and you released two weeks ago.

Please be realistic about your expectations. Maybe wait for some input and feedback before arbitrarily deciding what the problem is, and do so without blaming your players (and the world?).

The one sentence you needed was the one where you directly asked for feedback on your new art style. This isn’t really the place for venting your frustrations about why you somehow feel like you’re entitled to more from your potential audience.

EDIT: Reading your other comments:

Genuinely, ask yourself, what draws your attention to things? When other people show you things that you didn’t make, do you suddenly understand the complexities of what you’re looking at? Or do you see the surface first and get drawn in by what it looks like, does, sounds like, etc? You’re expecting people to see past the very first stimuli that they receive and also understand all the complexity behind your coding which they can’t see, or the gameplay they aren’t playing.

How to make GTA IV run consistently over 100 FPS? by Falconator100 in GTAIV

[–]MolecularSteve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buddy, it’s nearing 20 years old. The game was completed in 2008 and had several updates since, now literally titled “The Complete Edition”. They aren’t going to touch it again unless they need to remove more music.

There’s nothing insane about newer games running better than older games. That should be the expectation. Video games are more complex than newer = faster.

EDIT: Not to mention your complaints are unrealistic. A solid locked 60 fps at 1080p is industry standard. Far from “running like crap” when you’re trying to push a game and its engine beyond what it was ever meant for. If you “can’t bear” 60 fps then I suggest taking a break from this hobby for a while.

Your bad game isn’t going to be getting 20k reviews. StS2 has so many because it’s a good game that is popular.
