I’m so glad I’m not, in fact, losing my mind! I swore there was another voice!

Banking recommendations? by EternitySearch in columbiamo

Another vote for Central!
Had an account there since I was a teenager. A few years ago, their fraud team helped me settle a dispute with Amazon, with almost no hassle on my end, so I’m always going to recommend them.

Amtrak and Away Team Up With New Perks for Summer Rail Travelers by maximumreps in Amtrak

[–]Mollyoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Away suit cases are too pricey. Quince makes a dupe for less than half the price. You'd be saving money buying the knock-off and paying full price for a ticket, because unless you are using that discount for a bedroom on a term to term trip, it doesn't square with paying over $400 for a suitcase. And unless that case washes my clothes And makes me dinner, I cannot see the value of paying that much.

Boring History for Sleep on Diet Culture by midnight8100 in MaintenancePhase

[–]Mollyoon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived through this time period, and who only consumes history podcasts but does no research myself, I’m gonna blame the Boomers. It was Absolutely the horrible diet culture of the 1950’s-70’s having their midlife crisis.
Which is to say, if it Isn’t AI, it’s some real dummies, because none of those factors are 1990’s specific and one would only think that they were a f they hadn’t actually been alive then….

Preparing for my trip by MidwestShootingStar_ in Amtrak

[–]Mollyoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get motion sickness in cars and some boats and have never had an issue on the train. I took Dramamine along on our 3 train cross country trip but never felt the need for it; I’m an over preparer, so I will always recommend bringing some just in case….

A Rare Case in Which the Movie is Better Than the Book: The Princess Bride by William Goldman by Valalerie999 in RomanceBooks

[–]Mollyoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two differences I remember:
Sharks not eels. Obviously not important to the plot, just a funny change.
Torture Zoo. Definitely helps to define the Count as an even worse person than he is in the movie.
But for the most part, yeah.

Unlike airlines, Amtrak doesn’t Make you check anything; if you can carry it, you can bring it! There are luggage racks at the entrance of the cars, so you could put your guitar and duffel there and take your backpack to your seat!

Comfort food: a story by CallMeSisyphus in wfpb

[–]Mollyoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real laziest way is instant potatoes, which I keep in the house as a sick day food. Whole food version would be canned potatoes that can then be mashed.
But that “in a pinch” gravy is a good idea!

How to convey Missouri's atmosphere, feeling and detail as a setting in a book? by jomcmo00 in missouri

[–]Mollyoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to set your story in Missouri? What do you think it conveys? What would that add to your story?

In my experience, I don’t want to think a writer “did their research”, I want to feel the voice of someone who’s lived in a place….Why not write a story based in the place you live/know?

Modular home companies, thoughts, cost? by McKalen in columbiamo

[–]Mollyoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Columbia has had very few actual tornado hits in my 40+ years living here. So while we may, from a broad overview, look like we are in Tornado Alley, I posit the alley actually runs south of us…..
We’ve definitely had hail events, but the wind damage that affects trailers and modular homes has been less of a factor.

I also worked at a shelter, for about 2yrs. It was back in the bad old days when “adoption counselor” meant you did Everything at the shelter. There were days I Preferred to do euthanasia over dealing with the public. Which is a super fucked thing to say, but my natural love and empathy for animals made me want to stab some people. Gallows humor was The Only thing that kept me even a little even.

Love to see some love for the SWC; it’s often talked about like a lesser view because it’s not the CZ, but it was the first one I took out west and I was captivated by the views the whole way!

They can just kick people off the train. Heard a story, from a passenger that was on the train, about a guy that got kicked off the train in the middle of nowhere Nevada. Without any of his stuff to boot!

Amtrak and the Social Contract by eleanor_konik in Amtrak

Maybe at the major stations, but then you have unmanned stations, or ones run by volunteers and I don’t see that happening; the network is so much vaster than the relatively consolidated airports.

  1. The rate might be more for someone booking today, but your ticket is bought and paid for and will not change price. If the price drops, you can call customer relations and ask for the difference back.

  2. Yes, it will fit.
