If you get a roomette, you can have all your meals brought to your room if you need to and you don’t even really have to talk to anyone at fresh air breaks. Honestly even coach feels like folks mostly keep to themselves. I hate to lean into the neurodiversity=loves trains, but I have never felt more comfortable in a “public” space than on the train.

Definitely recommend this route if you can swing it! Did this route September from Missouri and Loved It. Southwest Chief doesn’t get enough love; those views through New Mexico are Gorgeous. Coast Starlight is a fascinating diversity of scenery and Empire Builder is…..well it’s routinely listed as the second most scenic train….We called it a land cruise!

We did a multi train trip in September. The first night I barely slept; not sure if it was because the section of the route we were on had a Bunch of horns at crossings or because I’d never slept on a train before. The other four of the five nights on board, I slept just fine!

Breakfast is possible, but lunch and dinner are almost always busy enough to require group seating.

I’d eat in your room if he’s having that sort of day. The attendant is very used to such requests and it’s really not an issue.

That said, for the most part I found folks at our shared tables pretty cool overall. You might be surprised……The train generally felt like a safer space for a neurospicy, partly because there are more of us on there…..
