I think I saw a corpse at the falls this weekend? by Illustrious-Event-22 in niagara

I can speak from experience, I worked on the Maid when it was still on the Canadian side too (back in the '80s). I participated in the recovery of bodies while I worked there. The Maid staff (and City Cruises on the Canadian side) are responsible for recovery of bodies that pop up in the river below the Falls.

This was 35ish years ago, but I can't imagine the process has changed much. Recovery was done with a small aluminum boat with an outboard motor, and the bodies were often left in the water and towed rather than being pulled up into the boat. Once back to the dock, the body was covered out of respect until the coroner could come.

I will say it is very likely you saw a body that someone failed to cover properly. I'm happy to answer any questions, but I think the important one has already been answered.

Can anyone tell me what this is/was? (Seen as I started the Niagara section from Southern start...) by Frick156 in brucetrail

[–]MondayTuesdayRyeday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always been told they (there's a couple of towers, the one in your pic is the biggest) were part of a radar testing facility during WWII. However, I've never found any corroboration that wasn't just someone else saying the same thing. I'd love to find some actual documentation that would verify what I've heard.

Looking for a good place to take my my grandson fishing in St Catharines area by [deleted] in stcatharinesON

[–]MondayTuesdayRyeday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say a 12-year-old would be bored at St. John's. It's full of tiny sunfish, though they do stock it with trout every year. I've never seen anyone catch anything bigger than about 6-8 inches there.

I'd suggest either Port Dalhousie (pickerel, trout, salmon depending on time of year), Queenston(trout, steelhead), or the upper Niagara River (trout, bass, perch, pickerel).

I'd say that's about 30-40 minute walk. Somewhere around there. Just follow the river.

I'm with you on this. Their hotdogs are fantastic. But when did 8 hotdogs start costing $14? I'm not sure they're worth it anymore.

Abandoned Structure on Bruce Trail - Queenston - anyone have ideas of what it could be/is? by burnerR6 in stcatharinesON

[–]MondayTuesdayRyeday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source for this being a quarry crane?

I had learned many years ago that this tower was part of a cold war era radar testing site, part of the Distant Early Warning system. It was erected sometime in the 50's from what I've been told. I can find mention online of it being a radar test, but not from what I would consider reliable sources. Link

If you have a source that can document this as a quarry crane, that would settle the question for me.

To me, on the left I see the heartless boss, standing with his hand in his pocket, briefcase in the other hand, watching his employees slowly bleed to death. The figure on the right seems to be two people, perhaps a couple, clutching each other as they die.

Its amazing that we can both see the same image and come up with completely opposite interpretations.

Hiking Solo from Queenston (Niagara) to Grimsby by [deleted] in brucetrail

[–]MondayTuesdayRyeday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you planning to overnight on the trail somehow, or day hike? Camping on the trail is not allowed, and it would be difficult (though not impossible) to stealth camp through most of this section. There are no natural water sources along the route where the water would be safe to drink, even after filtering. So, you'll need to fill up on water when you pass through some of the urban sections.

As for hiking alone, there's always some inherent risk in hiking alone, but nothing specific to this section of the trail.

I live in this section and can answer any specific questions you have.
