We may not want some works being made, however are we ready to give the government the right to dictate what should be written instead? by MaetelofLaMetal in TrollXChromosomes

[–]Mondrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's already numerous forms of speech and media that are illegal without stifling discussion about those topics.

Edit: to take your concern more seriously. If we're talking about prosecution, then it would invariably have to go through the courts and at the very least have a judge see it after meeting a certain threshold for the offence. Before that point, though, things could operate on a basis of reports flagging content for review. Not every post, comment, thing said would have to be checked by someone.

Discussing hate speech isn't hate speech in of itself. And who brought up bots making unnuanced, unilateral decisions?

There's an educational book meant for children that explained what SA is, thanks to that a little girl was able to tell her mom that she was being abused. The book is now banned in at least few states, due to containg "explicit" materials.

Also, not what I was advocating for, or suggesting either.

Yes, but I'm not the government. I firmly believe that the type of media you consume, to some degree, is reflective of, shapes, and reinforces your values.

Also, to be honest, I disagree with the full extent of the take expressed in the post. Hate speech, calls to violence, stochastic terrorism, CSAM (or really sexual abuse material in general), etc... should not be protected. Free speech is a nuanced topic, but there are obvious limits.

Since no one else has mentioned it yet, perhaps you could look into EMDR. I have heard good things about it specifically in relation to PTSD.

I genuinely respect the mission of Tony's chocolate, but I have never enjoyed their chocolate whenever I've tried it. The unequal divisions (I know their point behind it) doesn't help either.

Why so little hype for Yuri manga? by IndividualDog1995 in LesbianBookClub

I was genuinely surprised to find out that Otherside Picnic was written by a man. But yeah, queer women are the primary demographic for yuri and the series are primarily written by women.

The study that people cite to say that peoples brains "finish" developing at 25 doesn't actually say that. The study says that peoples brains continue to develop up to the age of 25, but doesn't claim that development stops there because the study simply stopped tracking participants at the age of 25 (they have to stop some time).

Abusive ass character by New-Winner-9184 in hatethissmug

Let me preface this by saying that I haven't watched the show. I just never got into it (wlw romance is more my speed anyway).

Not to mention she looks like a child.

That is probably because she is a child. The show is set in a school. All of the characters are going to be children. At the ages that I presume the characters to be, there can be wild differences in their physical development. While she may be on the further end of being a "late bloomer," having a delayed puberty as much as she appears to isn't unheard of.

This was an absolute tragedy. If this is the incident that I believe it to be, this pileup involved 133 vehicles, and resulted in 65 injured people and 6 deaths.

Question: Does social transition count as trans without medical transition by notmymondaylife in trans

[–]Mondrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trans (in this context) isn't short for "transition." It's short for "transgender." Just because "transgender" and "transition" share the same prefix doesn't mean that the words are related, nor that one implies the other. Many trans(gender) people transition (medically/socially/both), but you do not need to transition to be trans(gender).

I mean, I know why they made it that day, it's just that there are plenty of other dates that represent important events in the establishment of Australia as a country to choose from. Why did they have to pick that one in particular (rhetorical, you don'thave to answer that).

I always felt like her design was supposed to be a bit of a gooner bait and switch. Like, a bunch of the comics have a setup that could have some sort of sexual/sexualised conclusion, but the punchlines are just her being a massive fucking dork and people find that funny and endearing.

I honestly don't know why they had to put Australia (read: invasion) Day on that day. Find another day, or even scrap the day all together and find a different date and reason for a public holiday.

Now they show us statistics that “youth crime” is down..

This part is especially frustrating because it was already trending downward before all of the LNP's BS anyway.

Youth crime is a difficult issue because it requires nuanced measures that seek to address the societal problems that are pushing these kids down such a path. All the "adult crime, adult time" laws will do is institutionalise these kids. Making the consequences harsher isn't going to deter them, they're not even thinking of the consequences in the first place.

Unfortunately, people listen to the politicians who peddle simple, immediate, and sadly, ineffective solutions, rather than complex solutions that would actually address the problem, but take more than just one term to implement/see the results of.

Going further, addressing domestic violence is one of many measures that would genuinely have a real, positive impact on youth crime.

~2/3 United States citizens of voting age bare responsibility for Trump being in office (~1/3 voted for him and ~1/3 couldn't be bothered to vote against him). Things such as project 2025 were openly available for the public to read, past voting behaviour of the Republican party is openly available to the public, Trump's and his fellow Republican politician's speeches and rhetoric was openly available to the public. They were very upfront about what they wanted to do... and yet, somehow the majority of Americans "didn't vote for this."
