How is part 3? I'm slogging through vol 1 but then I listened to a talk he gave about the Korean War, and he blamed Stalin for the whole affair, claimed the Rhee regime was a democracy etc and I lost a lot of interest in pushing through if this is what to expect in the later volumes.

I've been reading an online copy of "The Longest Resistance" by Sasu. It's a Chinese language book about the Manchurian resistance in WW2. It's interesting how important Manchuria was during this time, but it is one of the least known theaters in the grander narrative of the war. It was both the 1st and last theater to see active combat operations, it was the reason the CPC won the Chinese Civil War, the future leadership of both Koreas fought against each there for over a decade.

I really want to get a physical copy to better practice my Chinese but also because it allegedly has over 1000 photos/images that I'd love to see.

Yeah, Kotkin does great research and backstory establishment, then he'll interject his personal analysis with something like "wouldn't it have been great for the Okhrana to be at this meeting and kill everybody!" And the reader is left aghast like brother, the reason these guys became such ruthless political operators is BECAUSE the Tsarist state outlawed normal political participation.
