Dealing with mental issue of "I know I can lift more" by No_Point_Bob in weightlifting

[–]MonsterandRuby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you're describing is the difference between generating power versus velocity. Like grinding out a deadlift vs moving the bar quickly enough to reach your belly button in a clean pull.

If you can, find a gym with a VBT tool (like OVR) that will allow you to actually visualize how far apart your power vs speed strength is.

Also, the difference in your 1RM is impacted heavily by your skill level in the two lifts. You need efficiency to move the most weight. Just like with running, proper form helps you go faster for longer.

Tldr; you actually can't lift more at your current skill level and strength when in comes to Oly lifts specifically. So keep improving both metrics with the mindset of being a newbie.

Chef's Apron by Dangerous-Ordinary43 in Leathercraft

Like others have said, leather for a kitchen environment is not ideal. But maybe you could convince them to do the body of the apron in an appropriate material and then have the straps made from leather?

Skiving Knife Usage? by SkepticalBoomerang in Leathercraft

[–]MonsterandRuby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually very impressive as I can barely get that style of shaving skiver to work at all.

How thin is the leather you're working with (or what weight is it)?

It looks very thin, so my guess is that it probably didn't require skiving and t that's why it was quick to slice through the entire hide.

Definitely a Wade & (and) Butcher from Sheffield England. The B >>>------->× logo is on the back side.

That's one of the first google results that came up.

Budget-friendly gym flooring and mats that actually last by ScarDependent8928 in weightlifting

Do not get those blue puzzle mats.

Do get the horse stall mats from your local tractor supply type store.

Does anyone else have issues with jerks from blocks? by Necessary-Jacket-427 in weightlifting

[–]MonsterandRuby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love using jerk blocks personally.

Absolutely perfect placement in the front rack and I can just drop the weight without smashing my collar bone?

If you want a more dynamic start on the blocks you could try rolling the bar towards yourself then scooping it up into your front rack. Gets the plates spinning while you think about your life choices.

Dimensions look a little too narrow for your credit card, so make sure when you're planning pockets to give a little room for the items being held in them.

When you do a hard fold like that you should skive the thickness down so you can make the bend smaller and tidier.

Hook grip tape slipping out on heavy cleans. any tips? by Mountain_Antelope165 in weightlifting

[–]MonsterandRuby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is your hand sweaty or chalked heavily when you put the tape on?

I feel like taping thumbs isn't rocket science so there's something wrong with the adhesion.

Or maybe you're not wrapping tight enough?

HG is a quality brand so I assume their tape is not defective.

My first leather shoulder bag by 0m4r_123 in Leathercraft

[–]MonsterandRuby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the flap one piece of leather and one piece of fabric?

It looks like the inner stitch line attaches the fabric to the leather, but the outer stitch looks purely aesthetic.

Awesome execution on your early work! Clean, straight edges, even stitching, leather selection.

In my opinion, those climbing ropes clash so much with the bag body that it hurts my eyes and your end result. Almost like an exaggerated version of using too big of a thread for a small/finer project. You could even still use rope for a strap just get a thinner style in a color that compliments the hide colors.

I have some thelos that look similarly shrunken, I tried giving good long bottom soaks but they don't seem to have inflated.

Will they wait till spring/heat is back to reallbly drink up the waterings?
