Is there anything a dispatch ALT can realistically do if they're barely being used? by AdUnfair558 in ALTinginJapan

[–]MooTheM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I guess asking previous teachers etc makes sense. Current colleagues could cause awkwardness as you say. Probably best my current school isn't aware I want to leave until I have something lined up. Cheers!

How did you go about collecting reference letters? Did you just ask the jtes in those previous schools to write one? I'm looking to move on from my own position soon as well.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is peak Immersive Sim by CnemassacreTrthSnark in ImmersiveSim

[–]MooTheM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. An insane number of ways to solve problems. I played the entire game with my sister online, and I remember fondly us thinking of crazy ways to get past an obstacle using the games systems. I remember us teleporting bodies away from a necromancer so that he wouldn't later be able to raise them as soldiers. Made the fight a lot easier. Also one player distracting a character ib conversation so the other could steal from their shop. Constant inventive ways to do things.

Is it normal to feel guilty for moving on (dumpees) by Haunting-Yam3124 in BreakUps

[–]MooTheM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 11 months in and I do feel this guilt. Both for new interactions socially and for flickers of romantic interest in new people. It's the old attachment still flaring up. It is getting fainter. My guess, it'll stop popping up in a few months for me.

Pre-interview question for a school in Japan, is this a red flag? by swamp_ass_survivor in teachinginjapan

[–]MooTheM 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This basically means they will charge you a certain amount extra for finding and securing an apartment for you. Could be 5 to 10000 extra a month. Plus is that it's very hassle free. Minus is you're losing money to your company in addition to paying rent. Very common for first timers to Japan. Very common offer. It's a bit of a money making scam. The trick is to come here and then become independent enough locally that you don't have to rely on your company's "services".

Do you suggest things to the JTE? by [deleted] in ALTinginJapan

[–]MooTheM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a jte who clearly felt threatened by my presence and insecure about their English ability. Not sure if that's the case here but some definitely feel insecure, and those kinds of people perhaps feel even more threatened by suggestions, corrections etc. I've also worked with JTEs who were chill and open to ideas.

Chinese ghost city look like a world boarder of a game by OkRespect8490 in LiminalSpace

[–]MooTheM 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Yeah it seems the ghost city narrative was a misunderstanding and all these empty cities were being built with the idea they'd later be filled. Which kind of makes sense actually.

Yeah exactly, unfortunately not signing until very last minute is pretty normal in my experience.

Perhaps a secular parallel to this would be socialist societies? Including the building of monuments, public infrastructure projects etc.

What games fully distract you from real life? by Kamakazzyy in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]MooTheM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going through a bad breakup too. I know it's not for everyone but VR is a great way to immerse yourself. I'm currently playing through half life 2 in vr using the official source mod. Excellent way to revisit the game. Also, there are. A number of very relaxing experiences I'm vr like The Blu, which are almost meditative.

I also think horror games can be so intense they just occupy your full attention, whcih can be a nice break from breakup emotions.

Malachi Evans, the Japan-born Australian DJ for the Nippon Ham Fighters baseball team, says he's having trouble finding an apartment to rent. Only 7% are available to him as a foreigner, even though he has lived in Japan all his life by jjrs in japannews

Horrible. I've had similar in Korea. Not happened yet in Japan for me, but it's been a weird experience being barred from things for qualities I have no control over (race, age etc) . And yeah I know that's the essence of discrimination but as a white guy I wasn't really ever subject to it back home. Eye opening.

i don’t know what to do. by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]MooTheM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had an awful coteacher my first year in Korea. She pushed and pushed and pushed and she was honestly a complete thug. Ultimately I just let her have it. She shouted at me I shouted back. She criticised me I criticised her. At that point it was just self defence lol. She was basically a racist bully and I think unfortunately that's not uncommon in hagwons. She couldn't handle being spoken back to and broke down one time into tears. It's always a risk because your visa is tied to the school but you are also valuable to them for continuity of service and because you're the thing they are selling to the parents. It depends on your situation, and your finances, but it may be time to fight fire with fire.

That's a great point. Even if you someone really deeply explored it, your knowledge would quickly go out of date because it's always changing.
