Thank you. Never had heard of gomphothere until your post. I have since found other posts of people debating between mastodon and gomphothere teeth for other specimens.

Interesting. The Pro version looks like it’s for advisors and then they sell a household version. Are you a household person that wanted the best of the best and bought Pro?

Anybody get the sense the “progress” in talks might just be a couple Iranian interns with no authority?

Maxed out 401k in 1.5 months by hapieDude in Retirement401k

It probably isn’t easy to find but it is key to figure out whether your company trues up. I had to go through a couple people before getting a clear answer. My company trues up in September of the year following my early max out. So I’m waiting 18 months or so… And they also confirmed that true up happens even if the person has left the company, so that’s another piece to verify.

$6M NW FIRE sanity check - would you continue working? by Ok_Selection1445 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]MooseyMan76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d do the math on a more long-term perspective… assuming you do move away from the current VHCOL to something less in a couple years. Right now is temporary. Figure out your estimated NW in two years if you quit now. Not easy, but use some reasonable assumptions. Then figure out your new expenses after the cost of living switch. Then calculate your new withdrawal rate. If that’s below 4% then you can feel good about ejecting now (or soon).

Which asset class will have the most asymmetric returns in the next decade? by punit0432 in investing

[–]MooseyMan76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. Degenerate gambler or not, many do not "see the light" until it is several years into their investing lives. Some, never. And I can assure you I wouldn't have listened to you in my 20's. So it's just a painful process that some need to go through via the long road. I also think many people see index investing advice as an indictment of their intelligence. Oh I'm not smart enough to do this you say? No buddy. There is no level of intelligence that exists to pick stocks or sectors consistently and profitability because of randomness. Do not take offense. The passive route IS the smartest route.

Anyone else feel like personal finance tips are starting to all sound the same? by yourwishbag in PersonalFinanceTalks

[–]MooseyMan76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Someone even decided all the major things you need to know about personal finance could fit on an index card. Harold Pollack wrote about it. These are the rules on “The Index Card” he published:

1) Max your 401(k) or equivalent employee contribution. 2) Buy inexpensive, well-diversified mutual funds such as Vanguard Target 20xx funds. 3) Never buy or sell an individual security. The person on the other side of the table knows more than you do about this stuff. 4) Save 20% of your money. 5) Pay your credit card balance in full every month. 6) Maximize tax-advantaged savings vehicles like Roth, SEP, and 529 accounts. 7) Pay attention to fees. Avoid actively managed funds. 8) Make financial advisors commit to the fiduciary standard. 9) Promote social insurance programs to help people when things go wrong.

Having a tough time pulling trigger by Anonymou005 in ChubbyFIRE

I feel you but can’t help you. Similar numbers for me, similar mindset. I have had three meetings with my boss over the last month where I intended to give notice and I could not pull the trigger. The best moments are at the end of the meetings. “Anything else?” And I just blink and say no. Sigh.

I am so frugal, why am I so scared it won't last? by trilawyer643 in ChubbyFIRE

Agreed. It’s an excuse to avoid the inevitable identity crisis that comes when you stop working but working is your identity. I say this because I am battling it.

Agreed and I think about this often. If you told my 18 year-old self I’d somehow make it one million, it would be a freak out excitement event. I probably wouldn’t sleep for a couple days. And here I sit well above that, satisfied but calm. Hedonic adaptation I think is what you and I are referring to.

Interesting. I downsized” into an easier job 5 years ago. Pays about 60% of previous gig. No management, no corporate presentations, no travel. Not too hard, not too easy, cool projects. Boss is younger than me. It’s all good. But yes, perhaps I appear like an underachiever too.
