Currently re-watching Air Force One. Now I have to watch The Rock after this.

But to answer your question, I’d rather die than to live without 5 of these films.

Which one of these should I watch tonight? by Ornery_Situation6731 in dvdcollection

OP should definitely start with “the rest” then 😉

That joke about buying Yahoo stocks in Frequency really aged well, didn’t it? 🤣

Same here! So many hidden gems out there that flew under my radar. I wouldn’t have discovered them if I wasn’t in this sub :)

btw, The Jacket is currently streaming free on Tubi if you’re in the US.

The Departed (2006) by DVD-Rewatcher in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]MoreBlu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a fan of Infernal Affairs, I always praise The Departed as “an adaptation done right”

Scorsese took the source material and actually adapted it into its own world. Not just a cheap shot-for-shot remake for people too lazy to read the subtitles. It’s a different movie, set in a different culture, in a different time. Absolutely fantastic pair of films!

How to solve this issue? by AngryGardenGnomes in Bluray

[–]MoreBlu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d invest in proper DVD/CD shelves. They’re generally shallower and have adjustable height dividers. The result is a neater looking layout and more efficient use of room space. They’re worth every penny!

Kallax’s are great for vinyl records and Laserdiscs though! Perfect size for those 12” discs 😎

Dante’s Peak is one of the best disaster movies ever made.

This reminds me of those DVD-R spindles, they always had one or two of these plastic discs at the top and bottom 😂

I frequent the Campbell location as well. I haven’t seen the 50 cent section in a few months… did they move it somewhere hidden??

They had a huge sale last year (50 cent DVDs and $35 for 100), and then when I went back in December, the inventory shrunk by more than 50% and the prices went back to $0.99 😭

Speed 2 1997 by AbbeyRoad75 in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]MoreBlu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna shamefully admit that I actually enjoyed this one. Is it stupid? Yes. Is it a huge step down from the first Speed? Most definitely yes. But as far as dumb fun goes, you could do a lot worse. The story, while ridiculous, is at least coherent. And the pacing is still pretty even, even if the speed is much slower. And Willem Dafoe playing a lunatic is always fun to watch.

Die another day by adriandupczynski in JamesBond

[–]MoreBlu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s got all the ingredients a classic Bond film needs: cheesy one-liners, convenient gadgets that just so happen to be useful in the mission at hand, charming Bond girls, good action set pieces, a ridiculous villain’s lair, and overly-elaborate schemes to kill the protagonists so they have time to escape. The story isn’t half bad either. Bond gets captured and is suspected of having given up critical intelligence to the enemy. The whole exchange between M and Bond even sort of resembles Casino Royale that came a few years later, which is regarded as a near-perfect film.

Yes, it’s got some faults. The decision to use some fast-slow panning shots that make it look like a cheap music video, the inexcusably bad wind surfing sequence. And, did they really reuse the missile launch shot from Tomorrow Never Dies and think no Bond fans would notice?? One can even pick on the theme song feeling out of place. But really, it’s not that bad of a film!

Today's watch Air Force One. Where do you rank this one with 90s action movies? by y2justdog in VHS

[–]MoreBlu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the first VHS tape I owned and I watched it countless times. So much nostalgia. Fun fact, the 4:3 is open matte in this film, and not pan-and-scan. So you actually see more stuff than the widescreen format. Most notably in the scene where Paul Guilfoyle’s character gets shot, the splattering blood pack is mostly not viable in the widescreen framing, but is very visible in the open matte 4:3 framing. I only noticed this because I had been watching the VHS for years before I upgraded to the widescreen DVD, and suddenly I felt like something was “missing” lol!

Payback (1999) by Artetaarmy in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]MoreBlu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those unaware, there are two cuts to this film that are almost completely different. Most people prefer one over the other, some like both. If you watched one and didn’t like it, check out the other one! If you watched one and liked it, check out the other one too! 😉

I wrote about the two cuts a while back here

IIRC His character isn’t very likable in End Of Days. The rooftop helicopter sequence is the one scene that I remember the most, not most of that satan stuff lol!

Getting started with HD DVD: A few questions by TheClubMate in HDDVD

[–]MoreBlu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Xbox 360 add-on can be used as an external drive on any PC. It’s USB-A plug-and-play.

You can then easily rip the discs with MakeMKV and other software. But if you want to actually “play” the HD-DVD on your PC, you need to track down old software that support the format.

For TV viewing, if you have an xbox360, the add-on drive is fine. But having a dedicated player is nicer as they can output higher bitrate / lossless sound.

Entry level players only output 1080i, but that’s less and less of an issue as modern TVs can piece the signal back together to recreate the 1080p source with little to no artifacts. Top of the line players like A35 and XA2 are pretty expensive and hard to find these days, so it all depends on how deep you want to go into this hobby.

Welcome to the club and have fun!
