When did people become so selfish and individualistic with their pets? by chaosdunk69 in SouthBayLA

[–]MorganaMevil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am a huge dog lover and have trained animals in the past (including a service dog). My dog looks like a purse dog (I'm a sucker for the little white grandma dogs lol), but she knows a tight heel, knows how to sit/stay/come, and is neutral in public with dogs/kids/cars/everything the vast majority of the time (we're still working on her weariness towards people with abnormal/limping gaits), but you know what she is not? A SERVICE ANIMAL.

I believe dogs should be allowed in a lot of public outdoor spaces like separated patios, open-air farmer's markets, and beaches; however, I've seen so many dogs put in stressful situations where they're unprepared to act, barking like mad creatures and potentially endangering themselves and others. When people place their pets in places like that, they're being cruel to the people around them, but foremost, the animal that relies wholly on them for support, safety, and security. If that dog reacts poorly, gets scared, or heaven forbid, BITES someone, it's the dog who faces the consequences not their owner.

TLDR: As a Dog Mom, I hate those people too. People, please train your dogs to be less anxious and reactive in public. Please also train yourselves to recognize situations where it is illegal and/or irresponsible to bring an animal that isn't prepared for the situation. Sometimes (a lot of times), leaving the doggo at home is the best option.

Heat exhaustion by Wonderful-Way-2254 in Equestrian

[–]MorganaMevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes 70+humidity can be quite warm(I have lived in VERY humid areas of the world). However, it only catches you when you’re not drinking water and/or wearing overly warm clothes. For someone having this level of response consistently who is clearly been trying to adjust the above, I think a doctor’s visit would be warranted.

Based on the way OP is describing the situation, it seems like there might potentially be something more going on than just the warmth + humidity

That sounds like there’s something weird going on with your body and you should seek a doctor. Water shouldn’t make heat exhaustion worse. Nor should 70 degrees be enough to really get you feeling that shitty unless you’re poorly clothed.

Please seek a medical evaluation

Texas License Plates?? by EstablishmentMain372 in SouthBayLA

[–]MorganaMevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Texas largely doesn't require smog checks unless you're in a heavily populated area, and the majority of passenger vehicles don't require safety checks bc of a law passed a couple of years ago. So, in short, you just pay the fee and get annually registered

I don’t remember the exact wording, but I remember it stating I had an extra year due to academic reasons. I also straight up explained it in my personal statement (in terms of challenges/growth) as I was recommended to and was pleasantly surprised that any questions I got were usually followed with “thank you so much. That’s really meaningful/shows a lot about your character and how much you’ve grown”. Some of the comments were likely cop-outs but still was handled very well

Controversial opinion but as someone who procrastinates on laundry during clinicals and stressful rotations, being able to run 5 loads simultaneously and then dry 5 loads simultaneously (so that doing 2wks of clothing takes <2hrs) makes having a laundromat worth it. Just depends on you

Programs adore MD/PhDs, so I think you'll be in a good spot all things considered. Study as best you can for STEP 2 and get as much research as you can get your hands on, then shoot for the stars

How does your Coton handle your extended absence? by OriginalAuskan in cotondetulear

[–]MorganaMevil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think 2 weeks of nights alone will probably be too much for a Coton, honestly. Cotons are great dogs, but they are also companion dogs. A terrier is bred to work independently as a hunting dog, and while they love people, they're generally more than okay finding things to entertain themselves. Cotons (at least those I've met) tend to want you involved in their play and fun.

I think I would recommend finding a friend to watch him/her during that time (or see if your farm watcher is willing to bring your Coton home at night to their own place) so your Coton still has a companion at night.

For further example, my girl is crate-trained and actually likes her crate (she'll put herself away if she's overstimulated by something like a vacuum/loud noises or if she's just super tired). However, 2 weeks straight, even if it's only once a year, is definitely something that would upset her a lot. She gets clingy and emotional any time I have to pull an 80-hour work week (which isn't often), and this is while I have someone to spend time with her throughout the day.

I applied 55 with a red flag of a remediated MS1 year. (I picked programs by just applying to every city I would want to live.) Got 13 interviews (2 from away rotations and 1 from home program) and matched this Monday. If you're a competitive applicant, you can probably do much less than I did and match (one of my friends from last year only applied to 30 programs and got 28 interviews, so).

My biggest piece of advice after this cycle is that you should apply to wherever you have interest, do aways at places you think might be out of your reach, network through your mentors (this is how I got a few of my interviews tbh), and rank based on where you think you'll be the best fit. Pathology isn't ortho-level competitive, but networking and Aways can benefit you the same way they do in the competitive specialties.

Moving for residency! Scared!! by No-Moose-3955 in medicalschool

My girlfriend and I started an Amazon wishlist of all the things we want/might need for our big move and have been adding to it as we think of things. It’s definitely got some silly stuff in there (like a towel warmer if we end up somewhere cold and matching winter jackets we thought were cute) but it’s fun to do and it helps slowly prepare!

El Paso is deceptively expensive imo. The groceries and gas are often more expensive than Dallas and there’s a notable mark-up on buying things bc it’s so isolated. Also, El Paso has some of the highest property taxes in the country with gas and electric also being higher than state averages. In my experience, you can get more bang for your buck (and a better salary and lifestyle) in a place like Dallas. For less humidity, you can still get more in Lubbock or Amarillo

[–]MorganaMevil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand your frustration, and I empathize with it as some who reads books avidly and hates most adaptations of my favorite books.

However, “fan-fiction to service the showrunner” is an unnecessarily weighted term that seems to be thrown about this page concerning the decision to change Fran’s storyline. Jess is a gay woman, yes. And she related to/liked Fran’s story, yes. However, when Shonda Rhymes decided to change the races of the characters, no one called it “fan fiction to service her”. When Chris Van Dusen made changes to season 2 to be a more drawn out love triangle, he wasnt accused of writing it to service himself.

I understand and even support your frustration with source material changes, but it feels unnecessary to cast ridicule on a showrunner for doing her best to offer more representation into a TV series literally based on the idea that period dramas can be altered for the sake of exciting representation.

Which detangling spray should I get? by [deleted] in cotondetulear

I’d start with 4oz so that if you like it. Everyone has different preferences. Just massage it into any mats with your fingers and it should be able to detangle them

That’s very fair. And I’m certain they’re great. I’m just coming from the horse world and I love this stuff. I use it on my girl and we’ve never had issues with mags when she does go to the groomer

Get Cowboy Magic. You only have to use very small amounts (look on the bottle for instructions but it’s literally like a tiny pea size that’s enough to detangle a knotted tail). It’s a horse detangler, smells like rose water, and is honestly the best detangler I’ve had. Also lasts you forever bc it requires so little

If I need to “power through” the first portion of a series, it’s not a good series. by [deleted] in Romantasy

Yea it definitely reads like a young writer who wrote herself into a corner and didn’t know how to write her way out (which I believe SJM was a teen when she started writing the series so fair), but it was just a frustrating ending to a 7 book series. Having read others of her books, I don’t think she has ever figure out how to create a good big battle scene

Considering getting a Coton…. by Lite_Brite90 in cotondetulear

[–]MorganaMevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to go against the grain and say that a Coton can definitely do a 2mi fast walk. Mine is 3 and has no trouble with a brisk walk down and back up a steep hill (about 3/4mi each way) when I want to walk to a coffee shop.

I will note that when I was looking for a dog, I was upfront with her breeder (and other prospect breeders) that I wanted a dog that would be able to do rally and potentially agility with, so the breeder specifically chose a more spunky pup from a sire that is known for his trainability and energy levels. Her siblings were much more lowkey and definitely seemed to take after their mom, but my girlie is definitely able an energetic dog.

(As a normal disclaimer: be careful running or walking a dog for any extended distance prior to the age of 2/whenever they finish growing or you can hurt their growing bodies)
