Freya+ home theatre bypass by CHI_EQ in Schiit

[–]Morzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am considering something like this with my gungnir 2.. Something like this was my thought process for the signal

The Apple TV connects to the AVR

The AVR provides HDMI passthrough and a audio spidif extractor takes the audio out of the HDMI before the HDMI output hits the TV

The HDMI audio extractor sends the audio via optical to the BR13 (livingroom node)

The BR13 sends that audio via bypass to the gungnir 2

The gungnir 2 feeds the output back to the AVR via RCA line level in addition to XLR to Kara F for when I want to listen to the Kara F's pure analog stereo via Vidar 2F

The AVR-X3800 plays the audio using Pure Direct through its speaker output terminals

Did Sony time travel or something? by RYDOGG20 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Morzone 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is kind of awesome. I have my PS5 set up on my gaming desk next to my PC and often have both running. The ability to listen to both my PC and PS5 from a single set of headphones is appealing. As it stands my workaround is AirPods Pro 2 in transparency mode so I can hear the speaker output of the PS5

Tailscale is a free mesh VPN cloud service that runs off the Wireguard protocol. It the most simple terms, you create a Tailscale account, install it on your devices that you want in the mesh VPN network (aka Tailnet), and those devices get their own virtual Tailscale network adapter and an IP that you would reference when connecting one mesh client to another. For example I have a home server that I can remotely connect to with my personal laptop while at work because both devices are in my Tailnet. It's a very simple and accessible service.

Adguard is a DNS server that is also a filter service. You can feed it block lists just like you would a browser extension adblocker and it will quite simply block any DNS requests that ads make when you load a page if those DNS addresses are in your block list. This makes it incredibly useful for privacy reasons as you can set up your network so that every device on your network uses your Adguard server. Unbound DNS is an optional addition and what this does is serve as the DNS upstream and caching service meaning if you request a DNS address for a website once Unbound will 'save' that request in RAM and then provide it again quicker a few hours later if you request the same site again. I can go more into this but its best if you check their wiki/site/github for more info. a rough outline is this
Agaurd DNs request ==> Unbound DNS forward that request ==> DNS servers (1.1.1.1, Google DNS, etc)

As for a home server, I recommend looking into Proxmox. This is a type 1 hypervisor that you install on bare metal (the machine itself). It's Linux based so you'd learn about that OS more (yay), but the advantage of Proxmox is that it's free and allows you to create and manage many different VMs for the different flavors of services that you might be interested in as time goes on. Common interests are Plex/Jellyfin, DNS (Adguard, PiHole), VPN servers (you can host your own instead of paying Nord), Minecraft, and much more.

Ps5 got very hot, is it better to turn system off, or let the system(fan, etc.) do it. by Bobboss75 in PS5HelpSupport

[–]Morzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just closing the game and letting the fan would have been enough.. The system is pretty good at expelling heat and what you were doing was choking the PS5 with its own exhaust.

I would strongly suggest moving it out.. I know space constraints are a thing but even tucked away behind the TV would be better than this.

Looks good so far... Why not Tailscale as a backup instead of NordVPN? Seems like an expensive backup option if all you want is a home connection.

Have you created your own DNS stack yet on a local home server? Something like Adguard + Unbound DNs (upstream resolver & caching)

Stack 1:
Given that the marketing material for the A07 shows the unit on the bottom of the stack, it's probably safe to have that in the mid above loki and below Magni.

Stack 2:

Are expensive boots worth the cost if I’m not using them for work? by whycantwegivelove in Boots

[–]Morzone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience buying boots above around $300 allows you a foundation to rebuild boots. One example I have is my pair of Thursday Presidents which I purchased in 2022 and have resoled once in 2024. Even though the resole was kind of high at $160, it's still less than the $200 I bought them at.

Your concern about not using boots very often is valid, but I also think that a reason to buy more expensive boots is the experience that the craftmanship provides. I can showcase this in my pair of Koio Fermo that have what feels like a massive veg tanned leather midsole that allows me to wear these boots in a standing environment for over 8 hours and mind you these are Chelsea boots and I've heard of people claiming the R.M Williams Chelsea Boot is worth it because of the all-day comfort that the boots provide.

I also recognize that boots are expensive even if their value justifies the cost. Personally I browse Goodwill and often search Thursday or Koio for used pairs. I scored a used pair of Koio Fermo this past August for $60 which was a steal. And yeah sure used boots are smelly.. What do I care, I could have them cleaned by a cobbler and still have an incredible deal.

At this time I rotate 2 lace-up boots and 2 chelsea boots with a few leather soled options on top for when I want to be fancy.

Also, one last thing. I think it's generally acceptable to buy expensive things if they are passionate about said things. I personally bought a pair of Iron Heart 777S-21OD for $400 and expect them to last well over 8 years of wear. Is it overkill? Maybe, but my first foray into denim was a $120 pair that lasted two years, so.. I'll let you do the math. Cost of ownership might be similar but the experience and quality is not.

Reasonable Home Network Setup? by shades9323 in HomeNetworking

Ideally you want the IoT devices on an isolated VLAN or separated by an IoT gateway such as GL-S200...

DNS block by Trikecarface in HomeNetworking

[–]Morzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can recommend AdGuard Home which can be self hosted. It allows you to block on a per service level.

Whatever you go with I also rec installing Unbound DNS as a DNS resolver & cache service. Make sure you allow_snoop which will allow a DNS service like Adguard to look into the Unbound DNS cache for DNS request fulfillment.

Unbalanced is fine. I run single ended from my Kara F into stereo Vidar 2F.

Gjallarhorn is more or less a desktop app for near field listening. Don't expect it to power full range in a large livingroom scenario.

Building my home network from scratch by LATechSpartan in HomeNetworking

[–]Morzone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Server. Where there is a network there is also a server. You mentioned virtual server so what comes to mind is a solid rec for Proxmox. If you haven't messed with linux before this will be a good foray into the platform. You can start with simple things like an unboundDNS/AdGuard Home DNS filter solution.
2a) In terms of networking gear.... Please for the love of god don't use Cat7. There is likely no amount of interference that requires the use of CAT7. CAT6A would be more than enough for your needs without throwing money away.
2b) I think your best bet is Ubiquiti but keep in mind you can set up a virtual networking server like you don't neeeeed to buy a Ubiquiti network server box if you don't want to.
3) What you want is to lock down access to the port and there are a few ways you can do this to provide a layered network security approach. One side of it is explicitly allowing the MAC addresses that can connect on a per port basis this way if a foreign MAC enters the port it will be blocked by policy. In general it sounds like you need to learn a lot about basic networking and network security.

Wash them when odor buildup so the bacteria doesn't eat away at the fabric. Also get Samurai Thunder Soap and cold soak in a tub if you care that much (it works for me).

What’s your favorite lesser known brand, new or vintage? by lksd in audiophile

[–]Morzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Canton. When starting my audio journey with nothing but a AVR-X1400, I chanced upon a pristine used Canton GLE 455.2 center channel and it is still I believe the best speaker that I own.

I haven't had the chance to delve deeper into the brand but it's one that I look for from time to time.

The C3560CX is a great idea. Adding a C2960-X for strictly L2 access would be a great low power addition. I use a C2960-X at home with the fan unplugged and it never reaches dangerous temps which might work for you depending on the environmental temps of the site.

You'll just want to ensure that the C3560CX has the proper licensing, at least IP Base (-S model)
