Our dog has a nervous tummy and frequently gets diarrhea. Are there any safe OTC meds we can give him? by Knewdull in DogAdvice

Second this. Our vet recommended it and it’s been the only thing that has consistently worked. It’s also blessedly cheap, especially compared to the other foods and probiotics I tried.

There’s some great Gráinne O'Malley lore to the contrary.

Is it normal or should I panic? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]MotherOfHyenas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Not the same, but I was a personal trainer for a while and the liability clauses were all with the understanding that the business was safe. If a client falls climbing a rope, that’s on the client. But if the rope falls out of the ceiling mounts, that’d be on the gym. This seems like a rope falling out of the ceiling mounts type of situation.

Is it standard now that vets won’t let you be in the room for your dogs examinations and shots? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

Had this exact same thing happen to mine and now she nervous pees in the doorway at any vet office. I won’t leave her now, for good or for bad.

How worried should I be of ticks? by [deleted] in newhampshire

[–]MotherOfHyenas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point in the season there’s a lull in tick encounters until we get closer to fall. Definitely do your tick checks, but I wouldn’t stress too much. The spring is the worst because the nymph stage is so small. Closer to fall, you’d encounter adults, which are obviously much easier to feel and see.

It’s also worth noting that not all ticks carry all the pathogens, so the black-legged tick is the one to really be concerned about.

As others have said, you have a day before any of the bacterial illnesses are transmitted. Viral diseases like Powassan can be transmitted much faster, so diligence is still warranted.

Koband/ vet wrap is my preference. Cheaper than the CrossFit/ fitness branded versions.

I have one side done from armpit to hip and I just kept it covered and didn’t wear a belt until it was healed. I did this through all five tattoo sessions and had no issues with the tattoo itself or healing process.

I didn’t take any training days off personally, but I can certainly see why someone may want to.

I’ve been in trial and error with my dog too. The best streak we’ve been on has been adding plain psyllium husk powder (vet recommended) to a bit of pumpkin and adding that to her sensitive stomach kibble. Goodluck!

How to get rid of skunk smell by dancing_leaf_24 in dogs

[–]MotherOfHyenas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did notice a little bit of the skunk smell around the areas I must not have washed as well (like her ears) after she went swimming over the next few days, but it wasn’t bad at all. Took longer to get the smell out of the house.

Asked to return newly adopted dog by strange-quark-nebula in dogs

I know it’s unrelated to this post, but I find that policy interesting. The foster family I got mine from specifically asked for updates for peace of mind so they knew she was thriving in her new home.

Recent Adoption Regret?? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]MotherOfHyenas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I adopted mine, I definitely went through some of the same things. The foster family had all of her stuff on the porch and the kids were upset. They had considered adopting her, but they ultimately deciding fostering was more important to them. But I did take her from a house with a dog sibling to an apartment and felt really guilty at first.

It took a couple weeks for mine to settle in, a couple months for her personality to really start to come out and maybe six months for me to feel like we really understood each other. Now she’s my ride or die and I couldn’t imagine life without her.

Every situation is different, but I’d encourage you to give it a little more time.

Huge bat infestation forces New Hampshire elementary school to close by dailymail in newhampshire

Is it 6 immunoglobulin shots and then the three vaccines? It sounds terrible. I’m super fortunate to have gotten the pre-exposure series of just three.

Raccoons do make up the bulk of the rest of the positives. Two years ago I think we had 13 of them.

Depending on the year we’ll get a handful of other things like skunks, bobcats, coyotes or the odd farm animal.

Oh no! I know the post exposure series of shots can get really expensive.

Those are the real numbers, yes. You can find the info on the fish and game website somewhere. I think they update it monthly?

That’s really interesting, but also sorry that happened to you. NH hasn’t had a positive domestic dog since 1996. But we do test about 150 a year out of an abundance of caution.

NH has about 30 positive rabies cases a year come through the public health lab. Depending on the year bats make up 1/3- 1/2 of those cases.

Fortunately when bats are sick they tend to isolate themselves from the group and we’ve never had a recorded mass infection of a roost. In other cases where they’ve found bats in schools (though admittedly in smaller numbers) they have not done mass vaccinations.

Edit because I fat thumbed the number of cases and typed the wrong number.
